Chapter 234: Chapter 232 Emergency Meeting
At 11 p.m.
Steijie sat upright and formal in his suit in the executive office located at the White House, surrounded by military staff, intelligence agency chiefs, and House of Representatives Speaker Pelosi.
They all wore AR glasses, and the table before them expanded into a spectrum of blue light, displaying Zhao Ling, Fogen, Helena Mina, and the new President of Fatida, Rees.
Rees had only been elected last month, but back in 2015, he knew about Wei Tianyang’s information while serving as the Secretary of State of Fatida. He had just turned 70 this year and was the oldest and most cunning politician present, at least on the surface.
"There is no doubt that Fogen and Zhao Ling bear full responsibility for this matter, as they violated the rules we set. Only when all five parties agree can Unit 091 be mobilized," Rees took the initiative.
"Why should I be responsible?" Zhao Ling said with arms crossed, backed by Li Ruyun and three Elders.
"Wei Tianyang lives in Yin Country, plus you arranged the secret meeting between Fogen and him. You both broke the rules," Rees explained.
"So what we need to do now is hold someone accountable?" Fogen spoke up.
"I don’t care about any problems in your country, I’m only concerned with the current state of Unit 091," Rees stated.
Steijie was silent for a long while, looking in the direction of Helena Mina, who was in a meeting room at the top of the United Council Building, 9 kilometers away.
"Let’s first find him, and after that, discuss what price Fogen and Zhao Ling must pay," suggested Helena Mina at that moment.
"How long has contact been lost?" Steijie finally spoke up.
"Roughly... over three hours," Fogen replied.
"Lost contact as soon as he entered? Was it the same with the people you sent in before?" Steijie asked further.
Fogen shook his head, "The situation in the quarantine zone has gotten worse. We didn’t have massive electromagnetic interference phenomena before."
"Why don’t you just come clean about what you’re really doing in Lusimin City?" Rees demanded.
"That’s not realistic. I cannot divulge state secrets to you," Fogen replied, shaking his head.
"Fogen, you need to understand, nobody wants to bear the consequences of Wei Tianyang going out of control. A million people died in Chicken Snake Country in those two minutes, and a city was lost. Do you want the same thing happening to you?" Rees pressed.
"Should we consider sending a few more Trinities in?" Helena Mina sighed.
"Sending more people in? Lusimin City is now like a vacuum for the Superpower Special Department troops," Zhao Ling shook her head.
"What’s the point of sending people? If Wei Tianyang is the strongest, he will be fine, and we won’t need to send anyone. If he falls too, it’s useless to send anyone else," Rees added.
"We need to figure out his current situation," Steijie said.
"We don’t need to figure it out... everyone here knows very well that both Fogen’s state secrets and Wei Tianyang are problematic. What we need to do is solve the problem," Rees stated.
"What’s your brilliant idea?" Zhao Ling asked.
"A nuclear bomb," replied Rees.
Fogen, furious, slammed the table and said, "Your suggestion is completely irrational!"
Zhao Ling, also with arms crossed, said stridently, "And I absolutely will not accept it!"
Steijie was silent, again looking towards Helena Mina.
Helena Mina said, "You should have anticipated this outcome when you took those actions. Fogen, is the language-transmitted disease... real?"
"There’s no need for me to lie about that question," Fogen said.
"Then it must be contamination caused by Black Medicine. Tell us, how far have you progressed with your research on that substance?" Rees asked.
"We have no relevant information to share with you," answered Fogen.
"Now is not the time for extracting intelligence, anyway. We have to fish Wei Tianyang out," Zhao Ling said.
Arguments broke out among them, while Steijie remained silent, Pelosi removed her glasses, temporarily withdrawing from the meeting.
"What do you plan to do, Steijie?" Pelosi asked him.
Steijie looked at the chief of the intelligence agency, as if seeking confirmation of the situation.
"The intelligence is absolutely accurate. Wei Tianyang’s phone had a backdoor. We approached the CEO of Blackberry Company, Tim, about this before the United Council gave him the phone. His communications with Spencer are all under our surveillance."
"Spencer helped him with some research and after entering the quarantine zone, Wei Tianyang made a call to him. We intercepted some information, not everything, but enough."
"Lusimin doesn’t have Heavenly Falling Objects, but we found something else that was brought in. It’s a little girl from Churi Country, codenamed ’Witch’. The pharmaceutical company in Lusimin City carrying out the research is indeed Hasegawa Pharmaceutical from Churi," said the intelligence bureau chief.
Steijie showed no physical reaction, as he was still connected to the AR meeting, but he was calculating inwardly.
"It might," he suddenly said.
Zhao Ling, Rees, Helena Mina, and Fogen stopped arguing and turned their attention to him.
"We’ll send in four Trinities to scout, the kind with solitary, cold, and merciless personalities. The mission is to locate Wei Tianyang, understand his status, and then withdraw immediately," Steijie proposed.
"Is that all? Not trying to bring him out?" Helena Mina asked.
"If he’s infected with that virus... who could bring him out?" Steijie countered.
"My suggestion is a nuclear bomb. Of course, sending a few people in to check things out doesn’t hurt. If there’s an actual problem, no need to withdraw, just flatten it with a nuclear strike," Rees insisted.
"Sending Trinities on a suicide mission? You really are extravagant," Zhao Ling said sarcastically.
"I never said to send in people, that mess is something you two made, you can send people," Rees said with a smile.
Zhao Ling looked displeased but remained silent.
However, Steijie then said, "I will send people in. None of you will consider using a nuclear bomb."
They all looked at Steijie.
"How so? I sense you definitely know something," Rees said.
Steijie ignored Rees and continued, "If Wei Tianyang is not infected, our people will withdraw immediately. I believe the normal Wei Tianyang can complete the mission. If he is infected... we’ll launch a beyond-visual-range strike to kill him..."
Zhao Ling shook her head, "That’s unacceptable!"
"You know very well, Zhao. Which Trinity can face him directly if Wei Tianyang has a problem? He can be killed, but we have only one chance," Steijie said.
"With the current situation, we simply can’t confirm his status because judging whether that disease has infected him requires conversation. Who dares to talk to him?" Fogen asked at that moment.
"I must say, talking to the normal him already takes a lot of nerve, if he’s not himself, initiating a conversation would be akin to suicide..." said Helena Mina.
"He isn’t that terrifying..." Zhao Ling stated.
There was a period of silence.
"I have someone in mind," Steijie said with a grim face.
