Chapter 232: Chapter 230: You Don’t Even Dare to Take Off Your Headphones
Wei Tianyang appeared calm on the surface, but he was secretly stunned. No wonder Fogen had kept everything concealed—the issue here involved the risk of national division.
It was precisely because Lusimin wanted to separate from the rest that Fogen had used the residents of this area as test subjects for the Black Medicine.
But upon further reflection, Spencer had explicitly told him that Lusimin did not possess the Heavenly Falling Objects. Coupled with the strange phenomena he had witnessed in the hospital earlier, the truth became increasingly elusive.
He turned and walked to the side, speaking quietly into his phone, "Zhao Ling, how much do you know about the independence movements in some regions of Libitelli?"
After a while, Zhao Ling sent a message, "Libitelli Country has three ethnicities, with Libitelli people making up 62% of the population. The rarest are the Bulogsen people, who only account for 16%, and the remaining 22% are Lusipid people, most of whom reside in two provinces north of the border."
"The Lusipid people have also frequently expressed dissatisfaction with the government over the past decades. In recent years, to revive the economy, the Fogen Government has implemented a series of radical policies domestically. Moreover, I’ve heard that many of the tax increases were imposed on Lusipid territories, but I’ve never heard of any rumors about ethnic independence movements in their country."
Reading Zhao Ling’s message, Wei Tianyang couldn’t be sure whether to believe the man’s words. Many things are not necessarily as they appear; seeing is not always believing, and he wouldn’t readily trust others.
Wei Tianyang turned back and saw that the man was still waiting for him, as were others in the hall, all staring at their phones.
He walked over, tapped his earpiece, and said, "I see you’re all not taking any precautions, and you seem quite casual about talking. Aren’t you afraid of catching that disease?"
The man laughed and said, "Sometimes, for the government to shut up the common folk and make them believe what they say, they don’t actually need to resort to any complex methods."
Wei Tianyang read the message to confirm the man’s words.
"By leveraging the lies of ’language-transmissible diseases’ and ’you’ll be fine if you neither speak nor listen to others speak,’ coupled with rampant propaganda through official media and semi-coercive measures by the military, along with the airdropping of supplies, and then the President holding a press conference to declare a city in an emergency state, even the most ludicrous lies will be believed by the majority," the man chuckled.
"As long as more than half the people believe these lies, opposition will arise among the civilians; then they will start attacking each other. They don’t have to do anything; just keep lying and let the deceived populace attack others, making the lies seem more real... They use these lies to cover up their biochemical experiments and ethnic extermination programs. Many of the older generation of Lusipid people are aware of this but, with Fogen’s generation, the tactics are just more direct and disgraceful," the man added.
Wei Tianyang looked at the man and felt an impulse to take off his earpiece, but the last vestiges of his rationality stopped him.
"Regardless of the ethnicity, everyone is still from Libitelli, and there hasn’t been a civil war in your country. If it’s just about economic and policy disputes, it wouldn’t be necessary to go to such extremes," Wei Tianyang said.
"Those who are not of our kind must be exterminated; that’s their only reasoning," the man replied.
Wei Tianyang didn’t speak, just pondered the man’s last remarks.
Those who are not of our kind must be exterminated...
He had never considered such logic.
He could understand humans slaughtering each other for tangible benefits like power, women, and money, but exterminating simply because of ethnic differences... That was beyond his understanding.
Wei Tianyang was born in Yin Country, making him a Yin Country person, but he grew up in Chicken Snake Country. The East Continent also housed many races, and there were subtle differences between the appearance of people from Chicken Snake Country and Yin Country. However, in Chicken Snake Country, even the cruelest warlords never used the excuse of "you’re not our ethnic people" to justify killings.
When he came back to his senses, Zhao Ling had already sent two more messages:
"Genocide against different ethnicities is common throughout human history. Non-kind, their intentions are different. Ultimately, humans are animals that base trust on ’clan and blood relations.’"
"The justice and fairness you seek can only exist within a set scope. Universal harmony is impractical; even people of the same descent will frame each other for their own interests. That’s just how people are."
"Are you using that to communicate with me?" the man asked, pointing to his phone.
Wei Tianyang didn’t respond, and suddenly, the hall fell silent, everyone’s eyes turned to him.
"I hope it’s not presumptuous to ask, but what exactly is your mission? They only sent you alone, so you’re evidently not just any soldier," the man inquired further.
Zhao Ling didn’t offer his own opinion but faithfully relayed the man’s words to him.
"You’re asking too much; it’s my turn to ask now. Have you seen this woman?" Wei Tianyang said, showing a picture of a woman known as the Heart Speaker to the man.
The man smiled slightly, "She is the same kind as you."
"Have you seen her?" Wei Tianyang confirmed the information, moving closer.
"I’ve told you the truth. Only those who believe the truth can meet her," the man said meaningfully.
"Stop speaking in riddles... Who are you?" Wei Tianyang felt that the person before him was no ordinary individual.
The man sighed and looked down at his empty sleeve.
"I was once a soldier. They say a soldier must be loyal to his country and mission, and I pride myself on having achieved that, but on one mission, I found something more worthy of my allegiance than my country or mission, and for that, I lost an arm," he said.
"That must have been very important then, for you not to mind losing an arm," Wei Tianyang remarked.
"It’s the truth," the man replied.
Wei Tianyang had expected the man would mention justice or fairness, and upon hearing "truth," he couldn’t help feeling a bit disappointed. People who excessively pursue the truth sometimes become the catalyst for disasters.
"Tell me where this white-haired woman is, and I’ll find a way to resolve the issues here," Wei Tianyang promised.
No sooner had he spoken than everyone in the hospital laughed simultaneously, but it was a brief laugh, after which they resumed their actions.
Wei Tianyang knew his words held little persuasive power.
"What issues are you trying to resolve?" the man asked with a smile.
"The Fogen Government is using Hasegawa Pharmaceutical to experiment on the entire city’s population," Wei Tianyang said.
"Are you collecting evidence? Hoping that Fogen will be sentenced to death in court? You’re too naive. Do you think he could drive this on his own?" the man said.
"Trust me, I can help you. Just tell me where this woman is. I guarantee you, whether it’s Hasegawa Pharmaceutical, the Fogen Government, or the forces behind them, none will survive," Wei Tianyang said.
The man’s expression changed slightly, his face displaying a look of disdain, "Your guarantees are not credible."
"Why?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"You’re not even brave enough to take off your earpiece. You don’t believe what I’m saying, so how can I believe your guarantees?" the man replied.
