Chapter 230: Chapter 228 Disappointment
Wei Tianyang realized something was off about this hospital.
He left the morgue, went up to the second floor above ground, and the hallway was filled with the light of candles, where many homeless people had gathered.
They must have heard the loud noise coming from underground; after all, in such a quiet environment, it was hard not to hear the ruckus Wei had caused in the morgue.
He was still wearing headphones and could see the others’ mouths moving, but he didn’t have his glasses on, so he couldn’t tell what they were saying.
Wei Tianyang took his glasses out from the side pocket and put them on.
Now, he faced a choice. He needed to figure out whether the Fogen Government had lied to him. He could accept them holding back, but he couldn’t accept being deceived.
Wei Tianyang activated the camera on his glasses, and at the same time, three windows popped up on the right side. Fogen, Xue Bi, and Giovanni were all trying to contact him.
Now, as Wei Tianyang looked at the group of homeless, subtitles appeared below his glasses, showing that they were cursing him and demanding he leave.
"Wait a minute! Wait a minute..." Wei Tianyang raised his hands, making a quieting gesture.
His eyes flashed with red light, as bright as the candles, almost like a laser pen.
"I need to ask you some questions. If you’re willing to answer, I’ll leave immediately," said Wei Tianyang.
A beggar in a tattered blue leather coat approached him. He was a black man, tall and skinny but not young, nor particularly old. His eyes were so black they resembled the stones in Go; his pupils were impossible to make out.
"We don’t have anything to say to you," the beggar said.
"You’ve seen people like me before, haven’t you? Fully armed, wearing headphones and glasses, with a gun in hand, just strolling in," said Wei Tianyang.
"Yeah, that was a long time ago. Those sons of bitches didn’t do anything good, and now, are you bragging about how big your gun is?" the black man asked.
"No, I want to know what they actually did here, to become what you call ’those screwed by bitches.’ And I need to correct you... bitches can’t do the screwing, they can only get screwed," Wei Tianyang replied.
"Are you fucking with me? You’re one of them. Do I need to tell you what they sent you here for?" the black man said angrily.
Behind the black man, other homeless people also chanted: "Get out! Get out!"
At that moment, Giovanni interjected, "Wei! They’re trying to drive a wedge between us!"
"What’s their assignment?" said Wei Tianyang.
"Block their language, hurry!" Xue Bi said.
"Speak! What’s their assignment!!" Wei Tianyang grabbed the black man’s collar, his face fierce.
Fogen shook his head in disappointment in the video.
"They..." the black man started, then suddenly his expression twisted in pain.
"Speak, fast!" urged Wei Tianyang.
But black blood began to ooze from every orifice of the black man. He gasped for air, his hands trembling as he clutched at Wei, struggling to articulate a word, but his tongue seemed paralyzed, and the whites of his eyes turned completely black.
His mouth was moving, but the glasses had already blocked the subtitles.
Wei Tianyang felt an urgent desperation. In that moment, he freed his right hand, already clutching his headphones, yet he couldn’t bring himself to take them off.
The next second, the black man went completely still.
He knelt on both knees, leaning against Wei Tianyang, and then with a tilt of his head and a snap, he collapsed sideways onto the ground.
Wei Tianyang watched him fall, and the homeless fell dead silent.
"Fogen!" Wei Tianyang shouted in anger.
"Fogen... this isn’t what I expected," Fogen said.
"What exactly happened here?!" Wei Tianyang demanded.
"As a soldier, you’re asking too many questions. A soldier only needs to consider how to complete the mission and remain loyal to the country, loyal to the employer," Fogen said calmly.
"A soldier must be loyal to the homeland, but I am not inferior to any country; I am my own nation! I am loyal to myself, loyal to my own judgment! I don’t need you to teach me!" Wei Tianyang said.
"I’m going to... log off now. Wei, I hope you can successfully complete the mission," Fogen said.
With that, he grimaced and left the video conference.
At this moment, Giovanni said, "They’ve already influenced you; it’s very dangerous to continue like this. I suggest temporarily suspending the mission."
"No," Wei Tianyang refused.
He knelt down to check on the black man, carefully scraping off some black blood with a dagger and storing it in a soft plastic bag he carried, hoping Spencer could figure something out.
Just then, he thought he saw something flash in the corner of his eye, as if hiding among the crowd, hurriedly walking behind several people, yet unable to clearly say what it was.
Wei Tianyang got up and searched among the homeless but could not catch a glimpse of that thing again.
Was it a shadow cast by the flickering candlelight?
Wei Tianyang fell into thought. The homeless around him, however, showed no emotion over the death of their companion; perhaps they were not really companions at all but just happened to live together.
He took off his glasses and fully understood that as long as the Fogen Government was involved, this equipment was unlikely to provide him with much valuable information. They were in control, monitoring, and blocking all the "harmful content" they deemed Wei Tianyang should not hear.
Wei Tianyang left the hospital, threw the glasses on the ground, and stomped on them. He didn’t like the feeling of being watched.
He took out his phone to check the map again and headed toward the next hospital. Spencer’s information was correct; it was just the first hospital that had exposed Wei Tianyang to things that defied reason, which also piqued his curiosity about Hasegawa Pharmaceutical’s secret research.
Without the glasses, he could not "understand" what these phase-three patients were saying in a safe environment, but that didn’t mean there were no alternative methods.
The linguistic virus couldn’t spread through electronic signals, so he only needed to call someone, let them hear the voice, and then relay it to him.
The only drawback to this plan was that the person on the other end of the phone would learn everything that happened here, but Wei Tianyang didn’t care too much. It was Libitelli’s secret, not his.
Wei Tianyang flipped through his phone’s contacts, picking out his human translation machine from the few contacts he had. Spencer was the best choice, but given his cautiousness and emphasis on self-preservation, he probably wouldn’t agree to his request.
Looks like he could only turn to Zhao Ling.
But as the leader of a nation, did she have time for such things?
Might as well try.
Wei Tianyang dialed Zhao Ling’s number, and she picked up after a few rings.
"Aren’t you on a mission in Libitelli?" Zhao Ling asked quietly.
"I’ve run into some trouble and need your help. Is it convenient?" Wei Tianyang said.
"What kind of help? If I need to come in person... that’s out of the question," Zhao Ling said.
At that moment, Wei Tianyang heard other people talking on the other side of the phone, in a language he couldn’t understand.
"What are you doing?" Wei Tianyang asked curiously.
"I am on a state visit in Yinbila, about to attend a dinner," Zhao Ling said.
"Okay, you don’t need to come here in person. I just need you to listen to the phone," Wei Tianyang said.
"I can do that. Do you just want to hear my voice~?" Zhao Ling teased.
"I want you to listen to what the other party says through the phone, and then interpret it for me," Wei Tianyang said.
