Chapter 226: Chapter 224: Language is a Weapon
Wei Tianyang’s threats had no effect, as the masked men and women showed no sign of backing down and instead closed in on him.
"Back off," Wei Tianyang growled.
After speaking, he aimed the muzzle of his ICR rifle at their feet.
"Step back!" he said.
Yet, the crowd still did not back away, slowly encircling him with knives and wrenches in their hands.
Although equipped with a silencer, the rifle would still make a noise like firecrackers when fired. He hadn’t wanted to shoot, but given the situation, it seemed like the group was gambling on him not daring to shoot.
Wei Tianyang pulled the trigger towards the ground, and two bullets hit the soil, sending up some dirt.
The people stepped back a few steps but did not disperse.
"Get out! This is our turf!" someone yelled at him.
Then, like the incident at the restaurant, it seemed as if a switch had been flipped, and the others started shouting at him in unison, wanting him to leave.
At that moment, a video window of Giovanni popped up again on Wei Tianyang’s eyeglass HUD.
"Wei, whether or not to shoot is up to you, but don’t kill indiscriminately. Those people might still be saved," Giovanni said.
"I don’t seem very welcome here. I clearly didn’t do anything. What did the people you sent before me do?" Wei Tianyang whispered.
"They disappeared. I’ve sent you their last video footage; check it out when you have time. For now, it’s best not to touch the air-dropped supplies," Giovanni advised.
A Wi-Fi icon appeared on the upper left corner of the eyeglasses, followed by a small green progress bar that slowly lengthened into a small rectangular icon.
The video had been sent, but he had no time to watch it.
Wei Tianyang lowered his gun, his eyes turning bloodshot, and shouted, "I only want a can of milk powder, just one. Don’t force me to start killing."
"You’re the ones who trick people away!!" a woman shouted angrily.
Wei Tianyang was taken aback, sensing some hidden truths.
But then, the words of those people were no longer translated... The HUD under the eyeglasses showed nothing.
"Giovanni! My glasses are broken!" Wei Tianyang called out urgently.
"No, they aren’t broken... The system has detected dangerous keywords and automatically disabled the translation function," Giovanni explained.
"Turn on the translation function," Wei Tianyang demanded.
"I can’t, Wei Tianyang. That disease is too dangerous. Don’t worry about what they’re saying! The heart-speakers were infected for this very reason," Xue Bi interrupted.
"I heard some... information. What happened in this town before?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"I’ve told you everything, and so has President Fogen. We haven’t hidden anything. Don’t listen to them; their language is a weapon. They lure intruders into the deep forest with such lies, not outright but slowly guiding you, making you go willingly! Once you’re ensnared, there’s no turning back!" Xue Bi urgently said.
"Wei, don’t listen to them. They are using conspiracy theories and false information to entice you. They haven’t advised you to remove your protective gear or immediately urged you to head to the northern deep forest, precisely to make you doubtful. Previous teams volunteered to remove their headphones in the same way," Giovanni also warned.
Wei Tianyang nearly wavered for a few seconds but managed to hold his ground.
With no more hesitations, he walked over to the supply box, and four men wielding fruit knives and daggers rushed towards him.
Wei Tianyang entered objective reality only to find that the crowd still existed, something he had never seen before.
The dead cannot interact with subjective reality unless someone acts as a medium, the embodiment and extension of some kind of will. Only he and the guy in the Seychelles Waters radio who called himself Netherworld King had this ability.
But these people didn’t look like the dead, as they were genuinely fighting for resources, just to sustain their own food and drink.
Wei Tianyang steadied himself, using the close-combat skills taught by Zhao Ling at this moment were quite useful. After all, these people were just civilians trapped within the city walls; he didn’t want to kill over such matters, as it was neither just nor fair.
He quickly took down the four men in front of him, grabbing their joints, tripping their ankles, using gravity and inertia to control their center of gravity, effortlessly and simply.
He ran swiftly to the airdrop box, his right hand transformed into the Bone Knife, and with a light slash, he sliced open a hole in this man-sized square plastic box.
Food wrapped in waterproof plastic and barrels of water gushed out from the opening.
With his right hand, Wei Tianyang grabbed the damaged edge of the box and yanked it hard, scattering all the contents on the ground.
There was a burst of commotion, and people crowded forward to snatch the resources on the ground, where Wei Tianyang spotted two canned foods wrapped in black plastic bags.
He picked them up, tore one open, one can contained concentrated corn flour, the other was children’s milk powder; holding one in each hand, he pushed off with his left foot and leaped 2 meters high, soaring out of the crowd.
The people in the small park paid him no mind anymore, instead laying on the ground grabbing food, as Wei Tianyang made his way to the park entrance, the disturbance attracting more and more people to pick up the airdrops, brushing past him like ants drawn to sugar.
He ran quickly back to that apartment, where now residents had opened their windows, looking towards the small park. He crossed the hallway and up to the second floor, arriving at the apartment door of the couple.
It was quiet inside, Wei Tianyang holding two aluminum cans, knocked on the door.
"Who?"
The translation text under his glasses’ HUD reappeared, marking that the voice came from a woman.
Wei Tianyang thought for a moment and said, "I heard you arguing earlier about running out of milk powder. I happen to have some spare..."
"My husband... has gone to get some. Thank you," the woman said.
She didn’t open the door, probably having seen the fully armed Wei Tianyang through the peephole.
He gripped the doorknob with his right hand and twisted forcefully, the lock broke off, and Wei Tianyang pushed the door open, only to see a brown-haired woman in her twenties, holding a kitchen knife, standing nervously 4 meters away, her complexion pale, eyes filled with fear.
She wore a beige wool sweater and a light yellow coarse cloth long skirt, her body trembling, the knife in her hand not tightly held.
"Get out of my house!" the woman yelled at him.
Her voice shook with fear, her body slowly retreating.
"I can help," Wei Tianyang said.
"No... get out... we don’t need your help," the woman said nervously.
At that moment, a baby’s cry came from a small room off the hallway.
"Your child must be hungry?" Wei Tianyang said, glancing towards the direction of the crying.
The woman quickly blocked the hallway, the knife point aimed at him, and said, "Don’t you dare touch my daughter..."
Wei Tianyang pressed himself to the other side of the passageway, slowly walking towards the inside of the room. There were two dinner plates on a small table in the tiny living room, stashing a half sandwich and a box of milk.
"I mean no harm. I have milk powder and also corn flour. I left them on the table," Wei Tianyang set the two cans on the table, then slowly retreated to the side of the room.
The woman’s eyes flicked momentarily towards the cans on the table.
Seizing that moment, Wei Tianyang rushed forward in two steps, his left hand grabbing the woman’s knife-wielding wrist, his right hand clutching the woman’s neck, pinning her against the wall.
