Chapter 223: Chapter 221 Lies Are Weapons
At 4 p.m., the silver Airbus 339 landed at Rusma City, the capital of Libitelli. Wei Tianyang and the accompanying Yin Country team of 60 people didn’t even wait to leave the airport before they were directly transferred to a large transport plane provided by the Libitelli Military, bound for Lusimin City.
Two hours later, as the afterglow of the sunset set the horizon ablaze, the enormous transport plane, like a giant black bird, landed at a temporary military base 20 kilometers from Lusimin City.
Weary from the journey, yet with no time to rest, Wei Tianyang touched down and immediately met with the local highest military commander, Giovanni, in the command tent.
Giovanni was in his fifties, dressed in camouflage and a bulletproof vest, with a special headset hanging around his neck. His temples were completely white, but his hair on top remained jet black and glossy. His pair of blue eyes were filled with authority and a killing intent.
Giovanni shook hands with Wei Tianyang.
"Welcome to Libitelli. It’s embarrassing to meet like this. If it weren’t for the sudden outbreak, Lusimin City would really be a nice place," Giovanni said with a smile.
"I’ve already received some intelligence from your President Fogen. The virus spreads through language, and the infected include... thousands of security officers, anti-riot squads, and a handful of special forces... and a trinity, right?" Wei Tianyang got straight to the point.
"The situation is that severe. But... Let’s not beat around the bush. I don’t understand why President Fogen asked for you specifically, but I really want to know... are you sure you can handle this?" Giovanni said.
He did not know the details about Wei Tianyang, aware only that this was special assistance requested by the President from Yin Country. His words carried a lot of skepticism towards Wei Tianyang.
"I need to see for myself before I can know," Wei Tianyang said.
Giovanni nodded, walked around the table, and gestured "come" with his hand.
The two men left the tent. Outside, medical researchers and patrolling soldiers were bustling throughout the camp. As the sky grew darker, searchlights on the watchtowers were switched on early. Wei Tianyang heard the sound of construction machinery and looked far into the distance, where he saw a team of workers building a wall in the direction of the quarantine zone.
"We have at least 2,000 regular troops here, equipped with near combat readiness, maintaining a red alert at all times, and six superpower special forces teams are stationed here," Giovanni said as he gestured towards various parts of the camp.
"We’ve also called in seven construction companies from nearby to build a wall five kilometers in front of the quarantine zone. At the same time, two armed helicopters patrol continuously, and four tanks are on standby in the rear," Giovanni added.
"I heard from Xue Bi that these patients aren’t aggressive," Wei Tianyang said.
"No... it depends on who they ’were’ before. The infected special forces and anti-riot teams, they have guns and professional military training. These people have had shootouts with the teams we sent in later," Giovanni explained.
"You’ve surrounded them for months; there must be no food left in the city, right? Have you cut off the power and water supply?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"No, because we don’t know if there are any survivors inside. We even regularly air-drop food inside," Giovanni replied.
"That’s the biggest mistake you’re making. If the entire city is infected, then you’re essentially feeding the enemy," Wei Tianyang shook his head.
"The people inside aren’t enemies; they’re just sick," Giovanni said sternly.
"Can it be cured?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"At the moment... not yet," Giovanni replied.
"Then they are the enemy. Indecisiveness will only kill more people, and that’s not fair to those outside the city," Wei Tianyang said coldly.
"You’re not Libitelli, and those inside are our compatriots. You wouldn’t understand," Giovanni retorted.
"Your President built the Heavenly Falling Objects trial site for pharmaceutical companies in the middle of this city. Perhaps, his definition of ’compatriots’ isn’t quite the same as yours," Wei Tianyang said sarcastically.
"Has he authorized you to open fire?" Giovanni asked.
"If necessary, for the sake of more people in this country, I will wipe this city off the map," Wei Tianyang replied.
At that moment, Xue Bi, who had come with the plane, waved from a distance. Wei Tianyang glanced at Giovanni and said, "Excuse me."
He left Giovanni behind and joined Xue Bi in the scientific research tent.
Many devices were pieced together, a table was filled with laptops, and power cords were tangled messily. Seven or eight individuals in hazmat suits stood by a flexible tubing corridor, waiting.
"Here, wear this," Xue Bi handed a khaki headset over.
"Is this a military headset?" Wei Tianyang took it.
"A special model of headset, it uses an active pickup microphone and our researched algorithm to block out human voices from outside, but doesn’t interfere with you hearing natural sounds around you. It’s like a modified noise-cancelling technology," Xue Bi said.
Wei Tianyang put on the headset and flipped a small switch under his right ear. The surrounding sounds remained clear, but although he saw Xue Bi’s mouth moving, he couldn’t hear any human voice.
He took off the headset and said, "It really works."
"With the voice-blocking mode on, the battery can last for 35 hours, and it requires half an hour to charge. Make sure to take advantage of this gap," Xue Bi reminded.
Wei Tianyang nodded, and then Xue Bi handed him a pair of AR glasses.
"Put on the headset and glasses, and people’s voices will be translated into text in real-time, displayed on the HUD. You can be aware of what ’they’ are saying without being affected," Xue Bi said.
"Can I communicate with them?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"You can, but don’t fall for their tricks. Just in case, I’ve decided to let you get used to it first..." As she spoke, Xue Bi also put on glasses and a headset.
Get used to it? What does that mean?
"Put on the gear, and follow me," Xue Bi said.
Wei Tianyang also put on the glasses and headset and followed her through a corridor made of transparent tubing, leading to a slightly larger tent.
Once inside the new tent, Wei Tianyang saw several isolation rooms put together with military glass, each holding three people.
A young boy who seemed to be just over ten years old, a middle-aged man with a full beard and a potbelly, and a provocative streetwalker in her early 20s.
"Are these... them?" Wei Tianyang asked.
He couldn’t hear his own voice but could see the translated text on the glasses’ interface.
Xue Bi walked ahead of him. Behind them followed six soldiers carrying rifles and clad in fully enclosed chemical protection suits.
"Yes, our military brought them out from the city," Xue Bi said.
Wei Tianyang approached the glass wall and examined the three closely. They appeared clean, their expressions normal, and their behavior not strange at all. They were completely normal people.
The young boy sat on the floor, calmly looking at him, while the middle-aged man seemed indifferent, just leaning against the wall with his eyes closed, resting. The red-coated streetwalker approached proactively, slightly opened her coat to reveal her attractive figure, extended her pink tongue, and began provocatively licking the glass.
"Say something about that forest," Wei Tianyang said.
The boy remained silent, the woman acted as if she hadn’t heard, continuing her provocations, but the middle-aged man suddenly said, "It’s total crap. We’re perfectly fine, yet we’re locked up here by the military like lab rats, damn it."
The man stood up, pressed his hands against the glass, and said to Wei Tianyang, "I’ve told you! We are normal! You have no right to do this! I want a lawyer!"
"Ha ha ha... That big fool still has illusions. I knew the moment they started building that thing in the city, it would come to this day!" laughed the streetwalker mockingly.
Wei Tianyang looked at her and asked, "Are you talking about... the pharmaceutical company’s containment station?"
"What else could it be? I knew something like this would happen when they started the work. After all, they were bound to capture people for experiments! Ha! Look! Now they’re not even pretending!" the streetwalker said sarcastically.
"My father is a councilman, you’ll all get what’s coming to you!" the boy said then.
Wei Tianyang squinted at Xue Bi, who stood calmly by his side.
"Don’t listen to their nonsense, lying is their weapon," Xue Bi said.
"How am I supposed to trust you?" Wei Tianyang looked again at the three captives.
"You know we can’t prove it, you know that," the streetwalker laughed.
