Chapter 217: Chapter 215: The Fairness You Wanted
Wei Tianyang did not disturb the young man on the bed, instead, he headed to the security bureau’s archives to investigate the details of the case.
However, the violent incident had only occurred earlier that night, and the report was not yet written. It was already 3 AM. Wei Tianyang found a night-duty security officer and stopped him.
"Who are you?! This is the security..." The officer barely started speaking when he saw the red light flickering in Wei Tianyang’s eyes and immediately realized that the other party was from the Superpower Special Department.
"Uh... Sir... What brings you to the station? What do you want to check?" The security officer hurriedly patted his sleeves and bowed.
"Why did the young man in the ward kill someone?" asked Wei Tianyang.
"Oh, that matter, it was just a trivial fight, driven by a rush of blood," the security officer said with a smile.
Wei Tianyang’s right hand rested on the shoulder of the security officer, his expression stern as he looked at him.
Earlier, when the young man was being hanged and beaten in the interrogation room, Wei Tianyang had been outside, listening clearly to everything that the officer in charge had said.
He didn’t know what the young man’s name was; he just felt somewhat familiar. Moreover, according to what the security bureau officer had said, the young man’s violent outburst must have been driven by a lot of grievances.
Thinking this, the security officer whose shoulder was gripped by him started sweating profusely.
Wei Tianyang suddenly smiled and said, "Alright, handle the case according to the law. Don’t wrong anyone and remember to explain to the victim’s family."
After speaking, he released the security officer and turned to leave.
Only to hear the security officer behind him say, "Take care, sir! We will definitely handle this case perfectly!"
Upon returning to the Jade Pavilion, Wei Tianyang lay beside Yaha, wrapped himself in the blanket, and soon fell into a deep sleep.
After some time, he slightly opened his eyes, reached out with his left hand and felt around; Yaha had already gotten up. He didn’t know who had drawn back the curtains, but the sunlight had illuminated the room brightly. Standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window was a silhouette, facing away from him, overlooking the cityscape.
Wei Tianyang realized it was Zhao Ling. He propped himself up with one hand, the thin blanket slipping from his body, his bare chest basked warmly in the sunlight.
"Zhao Ling, you forgot to knock," Wei Tianyang said.
Zhao Ling turned around, her hair had inexplicably turned a faint green, and her skin was paler than he remembered, her eyes emitting a light yellow hue.
She wore a deep blue off-the-shoulder cheongsam, her fulsome and shapely legs encased in dark purple thigh-high stockings, and she wore a pair of brown-red high heels.
"You look much sturdier than I remember," Zhao Ling said with a light smile.
Over the past three years, Wei Tianyang had undergone a profound transformation. He lay on his side, his robust figure exposed, the relaxed state still revealing the contours of his well-defined abs and full pectorals like boulders.
"You’re standing by my bed early in the morning... just to compliment my physique?" Wei Tianyang said.
"Early in the morning? It’s already noon," Zhao Ling lifted her wrist, indicating her watch.
"Oh..." Wei Tianyang subconsciously went to check his watch, only to find his wrist bare.
"Is jet lag giving you a hard time?" chuckled Zhao Ling.
Wei Tianyang slightly furrowed his brow. Was Zhao Ling here to admonish him?
"Jade Pavilion, is it a cage?" he countered.
Zhao Ling shook her head gently, she turned again to gaze out the window and softly said, "Yin Country is the cage."
Wei Tianyang sensed there was more to her words, similar to Steijie’s, vague and unclear.
"You seem to have gotten younger," Wei Tianyang said.
Although she wasn’t considered old before, the fine lines around her eyes and the texture of her skin and body showed she was a woman in her thirties.
Now, however, Zhao Ling’s skin was paler and tauter, appearing more like a flourishing woman in her mid-twenties.
"I’ve repaired some... parts of my body," Zhao Ling said.
"Disease? Or ... injury?" Wei Tianyang said.
Zhao Ling’s living conditions were such that she wouldn’t easily fall ill, right? Besides, wouldn’t it be a type of disease that required shedding skin to heal?
If it was an injury ... it was also unimaginable, considering she was part of the Superpower Special Department. Moreover, who would dare to hit her?
"It’s nothing serious," Zhao Ling lowered her head and said indifferently.
Wei Tianyang didn’t understand the woman’s hints. He got up and sat on the edge of the bed, bringing up last night’s case.
"I had just gotten off the plane last night when I heard the news about a vicious murder in the lower prosperity area..." Wei Tianyang said.
"I know about you heading to the lower security bureau last night. How did you find the place?" asked Zhao Ling.
"There’s only one security bureau in the lower area, and considering the size of the city, it’s actually not quite sufficient. And how did you know I was there? Drone surveillance?" asked Wei Tianyang.
Zhao Ling nodded.
"I saw some things ... some things I didn’t want to see," Wei Tianyang said.
"It’s just a minor case, not worth our worry. The mayor and the head of the security bureau will handle it," Zhao Ling said.
"I think there’s more to it. I heard some disturbing talk, and, moreover, they subjected that young man to mob justice," Wei Tianyang said.
"What do you want to do? Want me to intervene?" Zhao Ling asked.
"I think the young man’s motive for killing isn’t that simple, and there’s also something off about the chief of the security bureau," Wei Tianyang said.
"You just want me to step in based on a guess?" Zhao Ling asked again.
"It’s also wrong that they practiced mob justice, plus the person who died had a background in violent gangs," Wei Tianyang said.
"But murder is murder. No matter the reason, the young man killed someone. Regardless of who the victim was, the fact will not change, so, he’ll most likely face the death penalty," Zhao Ling said.
"But what if those gang members have been colluding in secret with the security bureau, oppressing the lower-class citizens and continually escaping legal sanction? Then how would you explain that? Is the law supposed to only punish commoners?" challenged Wei Tianyang.
"You said you wanted fairness, didn’t you? If I intervene, would that be fair? If the lower-class citizens are oppressed, they can file a complaint. Why must they resort to killing?" Zhao Ling countered.
"What if filing a complaint doesn’t work?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"Then we must find a way to make the system function. No mechanism is faultless, no structure is one hundred percent stable; errors will always occur. What we need to do is strive to make this system operate correctly," said Zhao Ling.
"What about the number of people who might die unjustly by the time you’ve patched the system’s loopholes?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"Yang, that’s the way this world works. This is the pain bearers of governance must endure ... You can’t deal with all the evil people instantly. And if I have to intervene because of your word, how is that fair to others?" Zhao Ling said.
"The fairness you seek can only be built upon a solid social framework where everyone must abide by the law, including the Emperor. That is the ultimate fairness. There will always be people who look for loopholes and want to bypass the rules, but systems will adapt and plug these gaps."
"If we rely solely on power and force to decide life and death, that is precisely the highest form of injustice. Today you might alter legal outcomes for his sake, but what about tomorrow? Can you take care of everyone? If you do this several times, how will the people below view you?"
"The issues of the lower districts will inevitably be triggered by an event, eventually forcing this system to purify itself. The young man’s death sentence can’t be changed, but if the security bureau’s management does have a problem, they too won’t escape unscathed," Zhao Ling said.
Wei Tianyang was left speechless by Zhao Ling’s words; he couldn’t refute her.
He also understood that his intervention would actually harm the very thing he sought.
"This is the fairness I seek..." Wei Tianyang mumbled to himself.
"You see your own shadow in him, that’s why you want to reach out and help," Zhao Ling shook her head.
Wei Tianyang remained silent.
"You were born amid war, so I understand your killing. But that young man was born in Fengrao City. If he’s just being bullied by thugs and decides to kill in return, then he isn’t exactly innocent either," Zhao Ling said.
Hearing this, Wei Tianyang finally couldn’t restrain himself. He stood up and exclaimed angrily:
"Not honest? Just because someone meekly endures bullying, does that make them honest? Should honest people deserve to be oppressed?!"
