Chapter 213: Chapter 211 Skirting Around the Law
Wang Ye ran all the way home. When he reached the street where his house was located, he suddenly stopped.
His back was drenched in cold sweat, his mind a blurred mess. Fear of the consequences of murder crept over him.
The manager of the restaurant must have already called the police. Among the six men, he reckoned he had killed at least two, the others sustained only superficial wounds, and one had escaped...
Although Wang Ye had wiped his fingerprints off the knife, he knew it was futile.
Because he had bought the fruit knife from a store near his house, and the Public Security Bureau would soon trace its origin. Moreover, his school uniform was still in the restaurant. By the end of the night, he would be wanted.
Murder was a capital offense.
But Wang Ye was not willing to accept this. Yangyang and his underlings had been committing evil in the lower city for over twenty years. God knows how many had died indirectly at their hands, yet they lived more comfortably than anyone. His mother had done nothing wrong, yet they had slapped her and even destroyed all her merchandise.
Why?!
The more Wang Ye thought about it, the angrier he became, but soon he felt deflated. It was very likely that he had killed Yangyang, and if not, his latter half of life wouldn’t be pleasant.
What he had to consider now was whether to turn himself in or not...
Wang Ye thought it over and hesitated in the dark alleyway. Watching the passersby, the street vendors, those grilling meat, frying skewers, and those sitting at the stalls eating late-night snacks..., he suddenly felt envious.
It was a longing for a return to a peaceful life after having committed a capital crime.
No, he wasn’t ready to die. He had to struggle somehow...
This was the lower city; if he could just run out and hide for a few days... maybe even flee abroad... perhaps to Chicken Snake Country?
After much thought, he lit up his student wristwatch and made a call to his mother.
The call was quickly connected, and his mother sounded both angry and worried.
"Wang Ye? Where are you? Come back home!" his mother said.
"Mom... I..." Wang Ye brought the wristwatch close to his mouth, unable to speak.
"What are you doing? Don’t do anything foolish! Mom is fine, you’re not even of age yet. How can you fight against those people?!" his mother shouted angrily.
"Mom... I, hahaha... hahaha... I chopped them all up... hahaha... Yangyang is dead..." Wang Ye said, unable to suppress his laughter.
His mother stayed silent, stunned by what he had said.
Wang Ye laughed for a moment, then tears suddenly filled his eyes, and he said with a sob, "Haha... Mom... I... I need to go away for a while... I’m sorry, Mom..."
"Wang Ye! Come back!" his mother urgently said.
"I can’t come back, mom. Remember to eat, I’m hanging up now." After saying that, Wang Ye switched his wristwatch to offline mode.
Wang Ye checked the time, it was just 9 PM. Even though he was offline, the time was still visible.
The night air turned sharply colder and he was only wearing a thin khaki long-sleeve, starting to feel the chill. At that moment, he didn’t have many thoughts, only considering escaping from Fengrao City first.
He wiped away his tears and calmed his emotions, then merged into the crowd and headed towards the suburban direction.
He had just passed two streets when a police car with flashing lights drove past him, giving him a start.
This soon?!
Wang Ye’s heart pounded wildly, quickening his steps unconsciously, looking back as he walked. He guessed that the police car was surely heading to his home, and once his mother learned of this...
It didn’t matter anymore, at least now no one would dare to bother his mother.
With that thought, he ran through several streets haphazardly and was already far from home. Just then, he heard someone shouting his name from behind.
"Wang Ye?!"
Wang Ye instinctively looked back, only to see two people wearing police caps standing on the opposite street, pointing at him.
"Turned around, it’s him!" an officer shouted as he pointed at him.
It was only then that Wang Ye realized he had been trapped. He turned and ran, but after only a few steps, a third officer sprang from a dark alley and tackled him to the ground.
"Let me go!" Wang Ye struggled, using all his strength.
"Bloody hell... he’s got some strength," the officer twisted his arm behind his back and handcuffed him.
The other two officers ran across the street, saying, "Caught him? I knew it was him, recognized those school uniform pants immediately."
The officer grabbed his shoulder, trying to lift him from the ground, saying, "Behave! Come with us."
Wang Ye pretended to comply, bracing his left foot on the ground, then suddenly straightened up, slamming his crown against the officer’s chin.
Taking advantage of the officer’s loosened grip, Wang Ye sprinted away. After three steps, his calf was suddenly struck hard by a baton, sending a surge of pain through him. He stumbled and fell to the ground, his chest grazing against the concrete, breaking a large piece of his collarbone.
Out of nowhere, four more officers appeared, slipping their batons into their belts and said to the three men behind them, "Can’t you even handle a kid?"
"The fucking brat! He just headbutted me! Damn it!" The furious officer approached Wang Ye, reaching for his baton to strike him, but was stopped.
"We shouldn’t be doing this," the officer who stopped him shook his head.
They lifted Wang Ye from both sides and carried him across the street.
Wang Ye felt utterly disheartened, not expecting to be captured as soon as he had tried to escape. He felt both nervous and depressed.
However, after a while, he noticed that the officers were not leading him to a police car, but to a van parked at the entrance of the alley.
One officer slapped the hood of the van, and the side door was pulled open by someone inside, revealing a fat, bald-headed man.
Wang Ye recognized him as the man who had escaped when he was chasing Yangyang.
"Go to hell!" The bald man, without another word, jammed a stun gun into his neck.
Wang Ye’s eyes rolled back, feeling an intense pain from the crown of his head down to the base of his ears, followed by his body going limp.
"Are you trying to kill him or what? Give us a heads-up so our chief can prepare," an officer said.
"Murder is repaid with life," the bald man said.
"Then make it clean," the officer replied.
With that, the bald man pulled Wang Ye into the van and then shut the door.
The officers watched the van drive out of the alley toward the center of the lower city.
"Damn, this little fucker’s screwed—either his skull gets opened, or his balls are improvised," an older officer remarked as he lit a cigarette and laughed.
"I know about ball-busting, but what’s opening the skull?" the younger officer laughed in inquiry.
"From the chest to the navel, one knife goes in, cutting open as it goes," the older officer explained, gesturing with his hand.
"Damn... wouldn’t he die on the spot?" the younger officer was taken aback.
"No, you think people are too fragile; even if you were dissected like that, you wouldn’t die immediately," the older officer explained.
"He was bold enough to chop up Yangyang... damn... who exactly is behind Yangyang?" the younger officer wondered.
"Don’t ask about that; it’s not something you can deal with. I can only tell you a little... Yangyang’s big brother is a black glove to the higher-ups; even the law has to detour around him," the older officer said with a stern expression, almost as if he were the one the "law had to detour around."
"Hiss..." the younger officer’s face showed both surprise and admiration.
"Keep tonight’s events to yourself. The station will likely have arrangements for this case; it’s not for us low-rankers to worry about. Pretend nothing happened," the older officer stated calmly.
With that, he strode out of the alley, feeling like he had been part of something profoundly significant that evening.
