Chapter 172: Chapter 170: The Living Will Not Speak Out

"The composition of the fighting forces on both sides is perhaps complex... The answer you’re looking for can’t be obtained just by asking," Du Ming said.

He, of course, understood what Wei Tianyang meant.

A small part of the troops actually in combat were from the Yixu regular army, with the majority being various PMCs. After all, Yixu’s equipment was advanced, but the troops had poor training and were highly risk-averse, preferring to avoid risky, life-threatening situations by relying on mercenaries.

On the other hand, Azaha was different. If Yixu was a nation under the guise of a theocracy with a gold standard, then Azaha was truly fanatical about religion. They had three armed factions internally, two of which had already been defined as terrorist organizations by the United Council.

Wei Tianyang smiled and said, "The answers I’m looking for are many, and they can’t be known by asking the living."

He walked to the entrance of the alley and looked outside, only to see that the hotel was heavily surrounded by public security, with riot police establishing checkpoints and security lines on nearby streets.

Du Ming walked up to him and asked, "What’s your plan?"

"We’ll take a look at the front line," Wei Tianyang replied.

The dead on the battlefield have their own way of speaking, for they have no reason to hide anymore; the world no longer has any relevance to them.

"The front line...? Lazarus is thousands of kilometers away from Azaha... are we going to walk?" Du Ming asked.

"To save time, we could travel using my methods, but... you won’t last long in there," Wei Tianyang said.

Du Ming was just an ordinary person who would get a nosebleed after staying a few minutes in objective reality. If he really was to traverse more than a thousand kilometers inside, he would likely die.

"I’ll go ahead first. You’ll have to find your own way to catch up. Look for any small villages or motels on the border of Azaha and Yixu, and we’ll communicate by phone. We’ll meet up there," Wei Tianyang said.

Du Ming nodded; his partner was part of a superpower special forces squad and his safety wasn’t a concern. He, on the other hand, would be a burden if he tried to keep up. His role had always been to provide logistical support for Wei Tianyang.

"Alright, take care. If you need anything, I can prepare it in advance and bring it when we meet up," Du Ming said with a nod.

"We’ll talk about it when the time comes. Maybe I’ll already have found the answer by the time we meet," Wei Tianyang said with a smile.

The two left the alley and, making use of the night, bypassed the street checkpoints. To ensure Du Ming’s safety, Wei Tianyang escorted him out of the security perimeter before setting off on his own.

Du Ming watched as Wei Tianyang disappeared into the night. He felt a tinge of envy; his partner had been selected for the United Council’s superpower special forces at the age of 20. His future within the organization was surely promising since most people their age would certainly still be in their country’s basic units. Du Ming had thought himself impressive for being picked for the United Council’s Army at 24 but standing next to Wei Tianyang, he now felt like a minor sorcerer before a great wizard.

He looked around and then boarded a bus leaving the city, disappearing into the night as well.

Meanwhile, after several hours of flight, Wei Tianyang had already arrived in the warfront province of Kanan.

It was Yixu’s largest western province, vast and sparsely populated, far less developed than Lazarus, including four cities, each with a population of over a hundred thousand.

After the so-called holy war broke out, Kanan fell into a bloody loop of being occupied, retaken, then re-occupied, and then retaken once more. Only the city furthest inland was still operational, the other three had become ruins.

But Wei Tianyang couldn’t find any information about war refugees online, and the situation in Azaha was almost blackout online. No one knew the current state of affairs in Azaha Country, only that it was controlled by a bunch of terrorists and religious fanatics...

Now, Wei Tianyang stood atop a residential building in the destroyed city of Ruvik.

He could feel the wind blowing from the direction of the sea, the moonlight spilling onto the land, scorched black buildings and piles of rubble everywhere, roads cracked, buildings collapsed, factory walls in the suburbs scarred with bullet holes, and the lone television tower standing like a monument in the middle of the ruins.

His night vision allowed him to see from his high vantage point, two teams currently using the cover of darkness to transfer their positions. Armored vehicles clad in camouflage netting hid behind the ruins, with teams of two to three snipers concealed in the rooms of damaged buildings, closely watching the southwestern woods.

Further away, past the woods, was another dark mass of buildings—if he wasn’t mistaken, that was where Azaha’s forces were stationed.

Wei Tianyang’s watch vibrated. He switched it to low-light mode and put on his earpiece.

"President Niya Ta is dead. Tell me you didn’t do it," Zhao Ling said sternly.

"It wasn’t me," Wei Tianyang replied.

"I don’t believe it," Zhao Ling said.

"What are you asking for then?" Wei Tianyang said.

There was silence on the other side for a moment.

"Right now, I’m contacting you in a personal capacity, only you and I are on this frequency," Zhao Ling said.

"It wasn’t me," Wei Tianyang said.

"The mess you’ve made, as long as it’s not on the scale of Wuliang City, I can clean it up for you, but you have to trust me," Zhao Ling said.

"I have no reason to do that. If I wanted to kill the President, I’d simply wipe out the President Mansion at the same time. There’s no need to do it like the news says," Wei Tianyang said.

"Alright... I’ll trust you this time... By the way, Yang, did Yixu give you any trouble?" Zhao Ling asked with concern.

"I feel like this country... is enveloped in an inexplicable arrogance," Wei Tianyang said.

"Today, their President died. In the evening, Yixu’s cabinet sent an urgent letter to the United Council, requesting that the nations holding the highest seats provide them with support from the Superpower Special Department and weapons," Zhao Ling said.

"Are you all prepared to agree to their request?" Wei Tianyang asked.

"We’ve already agreed to them," Zhao Ling said.

"Why is that?" Wei Tianyang didn’t understand.

"The reasons behind it are complicated and involve politics... I just wanted to give you a heads up, be careful," Zhao Ling said.

"Why isn’t Helena Mina reminding us?" Wei Tianyang asked.

"She’s still busy gathering information and allocating resources; multiple countries’ superpower special forces have been assigned to Yixu, involving multi-faceted management. There are risks, authority issues, and responsibilities... It’s complex. She’s probably at her wits’ end. I’m telling you this first thing. She probably won’t be able to contact you until tomorrow," Zhao Ling said.

"Multiple countries... How many people are coming in?" Wei Tianyang said.

"Over twenty. I’ve already sent four in," Zhao Ling said.

"Damn, that’s quite the favor. What price did Yixu Country pay to deserve such effort?" Wei Tianyang was surprised and a bit shocked.

"Like I said... it’s complicated political reasons. It’s better you don’t know. Focus on your mission, destroy the nuclear weapons, and come back immediately. Those superpower special forces won’t touch you because we’ve explained the situation, and they have been marked green by your AR info. I’m just afraid you might not know and end up killing them," Zhao Ling said.

"I’m different from before," Wei Tianyang said.

"Alright... How’s your mission going? Do you need my help?" Zhao Ling said.

"The nuclear bomb was sold to Yixu by the Public Party behind Steijie’s back. Now, this bomb may have been transferred again by internal forces within Yixu. I’m investigating this matter," Wei Tianyang said.

"Do you have evidence? If you can truly prove that, I could use it to do Steijie a favor," Zhao Ling said with a laugh.

"Probably not, and it’s not important," Wei Tianyang said.

"Hmph, what a pity," Zhao Ling said.

"I’m going to leave the channel now," Wei Tianyang said.

From a distance, he saw a residential building that had been half-destroyed by artillery fire, brightly lit in the dead of night, so out of place.

Even so, none of the hidden and lurking troops approached it for inspection. Clearly, the building was filled with the deceased.

"Alright, I’ll contact you again," Zhao Ling sighed, his tone somewhat desolate.

He stowed away his earpiece, leaped into the air, and disappeared into the night.
