Chapter 167: Chapter 165: Public Opinion Surges
Wei Tianyang returned to the hotel’s bathroom, where he left the murderous steak knife and gloves behind, disconnecting from reality.
He turned on the faucet and washed his hands, the dark red blood swirling down the drain. Looking up at the mirror, he wiped the blood spots off his cheeks.
He pressed the toilet flush button with a whoosh, then stepped out of the bathroom. Outside, Du Ming was leaning on the balcony smoking a cigarette. In just about ten minutes, he had slain the President of the country, yet it seemed as if nothing had happened.
Hearing the noise, Du Ming turned around with a smirk, "Were you in there for a quarter of an hour? Not used to the local water and soil? I brought some digestive pills and anti-diarrheal medication."
"No need. I was just playing some ’Eliminate’ in the restroom," Wei Tianyang waved dismissively.
"Oh, you still play that? How many levels did you complete?" Du Ming chuckled.
Just then, several soldiers entered the room and looked around with hostility in their eyes.
At that moment, an air raid siren sounded from the balcony.
Du Ming seemed surprised; he first looked up at the sky, but seeing no trace of fighter jets, he walked back into the room.
Then Robson also rushed in frantically.
"Did you guys destroy the surveillance equipment in the room?" he demanded angrily.
"We should be the ones angry here! We are war observers sent by the United Council. You not only put us under house arrest but also eavesdropped on our conversations. Do you realize what this implies?" Du Ming retorted.
"Lazarus just entered a state of emergency; I’m not going to be polite with you anymore. During these four days, you won’t be allowed to go anywhere, and I will have someone reinstall the surveillance equipment. If you dare tamper with it again, I will chop your hands off!" Robson threatened.
Faced with this direct threat, Du Ming dropped his non-serious demeanor and became stern, "Your actions amount to a threat against the United Council. Understand your place, adjust your attitude, and restrain your behavior!"
"Your inferior race doesn’t deserve to talk to me about attitude or status. You are safe here only because we wanted to show you what civilization is. If you overstep again, don’t expect to leave here alive!" Robson snapped.
"Don’t be too arrogant!" Du Ming shouted angrily.
Wei Tianyang waved his hand, "Alright, let it go, don’t get angry, just leave it be."
Robson smirked at Du Ming, "Your colleague knows better than you."
Du Ming wanted to argue further, but Wei Tianyang stopped him, and they watched as Robson left the room with the soldiers and locked the door from outside.
"What happened just now? Why so weak?! We need to buy time! Don’t you want to complete the mission?" Du Ming said.
"Don’t rush, don’t rush... calm down," Wei Tianyang said.
He picked up the remote control and turned on the TV; all four available channels were broadcasting urgent news.
"President Niya Ta was assassinated in his office...Along with him, the president’s office secretary and the photography team were also killed...The national security department is currently conducting an urgent investigation, initially suspecting Azaha terrorists are behind this, not excluding a Pseudo-God impersonating Rada Gan."
"Lazarus has immediately entered a state of emergency, martial law has begun in the entire city, and Vice President Luco will temporarily assume the presidency..."
On the news footage, Niya Ta’s office was pixelated, the floor covered in blood, armed soldiers and black-clad secret agents crowded the hallway, and medical personnel carried the bodies out of the President Mansion.
And all of this had happened just ten minutes ago.
Du Ming was somewhat in disbelief, "We just arrived... How could their President have..."
"Doing too many bad things will eventually get you retribution, the government of this country is seriously ill, and in my opinion, it’s beyond saving," Wei Tianyang said calmly.
"It’s really become a mess... Should we ask for help, we can’t function in this situation," Du Ming said.
"Just stay here and help me block those soldiers," Wei Tianyang said with a smile.
"Hey, hey... when you say it like that... it sounds like you can actually get out," Du Ming said, puzzled.
"Just treat it as an all-expenses-paid trip. As long as you stay in this hotel, they won’t touch you. I have my ways. If they ask where I went, just say I’m using the bathroom," Wei Tianyang said.
"Alright, I don’t quite understand, but I won’t ask more. You have the capabilities to handle this, so go ahead and do it, I’ll take care of the rest," Du Ming nodded.
"Mm," Wei Tianyang nodded.
Even though Du Ming usually appeared carefree, he was sensible and mature, which made it remarkably easy to work with him.
In the afternoon, Robson brought four agents who installed bugs and cameras in the room right in front of them, as if to show off.
Except for the bathroom and balcony, cameras were installed in every corner of the room allowing almost a dead-angle-free observation of any place in the room. The agents thought there was no need to waste cameras since the balcony could be monitored by plainclothes agents from the next room.
Robson watched the agents install these devices with a scornful smile before leaving.
Du Ming lost his temper several times, but it was to no avail, and Wei Tianyang was sleeping the whole time.
During the day, under surveillance, it was difficult to go out for long periods, but the night was different; one only needed to stuff pillows into the bed under the cover beforehand to deceive the cameras.
So, he needed to rest and gather strength during the day so that he could be a night owl when dusk fell.
In the evening, the soldiers brought dinner consisting of some oatmeal porridge and two pieces of bread. Du Ming protested to them, but they simply threw the trays on the floor and left.
Just woken up, Wei Tianyang took out emergency compressed biscuits from his bag, eating them while watching the news.
Several more helicopters patrolled over Lazarus City. Although the President’s death hadn’t altered the political situation, it had incited many people to march in the streets.
Wei Tianyang wanted to know the current national sentiment. In Chicken Snake Country, he had realized that soldiers were just tools executing orders, and it was the politicians who controlled these weapons that were the real culprits.
Now, however, he was somewhat shaking in that belief.
Whether it was Du Yan or President Niya Ta, the voids left by their deaths were quickly filled, as if their existence was merely symbolic; as long as the symbol itself wasn’t destroyed, the death of countless others was meaningless.
Who, ultimately, decided who could sit on the throne of a country’s rule?
If the person in that position could be replaced so easily, then those deciding whether to open fire were definitely not limited to them.
Wei Tianyang walked out to the balcony, staring into the calm sea, then went back into the room and once again entered the bathroom.
In the blink of an eye, he had arrived on the street, which was now packed with an angry crowd of protesters.
People held up signs and shouted in anger; Wei Tianyang was swept along with the crowd toward an unknown destination. The emotions surrounding him reminded him of the refugees in the Chicken Snake Country military camp, perhaps he had already ignited the same flame against tyranny and war here.
Wei Tianyang put on his headphones, trying to make out what they were saying. The moment he turned on the translation function, he heard the chilling and repulsive words:
"Kill all the demons from Azaha! Avenge our President! The whole world must pay for President Niya Ta’s death!!!"
