Chapter 91: Chapter 91: Take as Prescribed
Every time the Yu Family’s relatives visited Wang Cuihua to bludge a meal, they had to tread carefully around Jingting and his mother. These two were quick-witted and combative, making it difficult for anyone to take advantage of them.
But the relatives were no pushovers either, persistently returning to the fray despite repeated setbacks.
Jingting’s household enjoyed the most comfortable lifestyle amongst them, and they knew there were benefits to be gleaned if one were thick-skinned enough to ask.
The auntie nearly collapsed with laughter upon hearing Suizi’s readily agreeable response.
"Everyone’s been saying Tiegen landed a good wife, and it sure looks like it today." How naïve could she be!
Giving away one’s stuff as if it means nothing? She clearly has no idea how to survive. She’ll soon bleed Jingting dry. The auntie couldn’t suppress a gleeful smile at the thought.
These old women always thought they were the sharpest in the game. Little did they realise that Suizi and Jingting could read their intentions in a blink of an eye.
Suizi’s concern was simple: She just wanted to know if Jingting ruined their vat of soybean paste.
Jingting chuckled at her reaction, and playing up the theatrics, he slapped the lid of the paste jar hard, his voice booming.
"Do you even know how to manage a household? This is all that’s left, not even enough for us, and you’re giving it away?"
Unable to bring himself to really berate her, he tried to assert his dominance with a show of bravado.
The auntie backed off a step, taken aback. My, was he about to hit a woman?
Suizi was mildly amused.
Fearing that the auntie might see through her, she bent her head and giggled quietly.
She understood what Jingting meant: The soybean paste was safe.
If not, he would have already given the auntie a taste. He had a reputation for an eye-for-an-eye+
She realized that she’s adapting more and more to the Yu Family’s character; particularly their austerity that advocated against wastefulness.
Looking at Suizi’s radiant face, Jingting could not help but grind his teeth in vexation.
He had wanted to give her a good scare, but his soft heart got the better of him.
Observing her holding tightly onto the soybean jar with a peculiar expression, tch, she’s just like his mother.
The sight of the young couple caught the auntie’s eyes, and she misconstrued it as a quarrel between Tiegen and his new bride. Since it seemed the soybean paste was out of her grasp, she felt a hint of regret in returning empty-handed.
"That’s right, did your mom brew some unicorn lily liquor? Get me some." She lifted up her big bowl again, clearly signalling that she was not leaving without some benefits.
The unicorn lily is a toxic plant used in liquor to treat bruises, injuries, and snake bites. While potent, it’s also poisonous and requires careful and responsible use under a doctor’s guidance.
Some rural folks use it royal jelly style, consuming this even in absence of an illness. This leads to various side effects due to the indiscriminate dosage and has harmed more than a handful of livers and kidneys. Regardless, the believers remained undaunted.
The auntie was suffering from a headache and wanted some liquor to relieve it.
Jingting flashed an enigmatic smile at Suizi, raising an eyebrow. Suizi, catching is the signal, thought: Could he be...?!
"You can pour it into the bowl, not too much." The auntie walked over without missing a beat.
If they filled her large bowl, it might drain the entire bottle.
Jingting turned around and took a large wide-mouthed glass bottle from an inconspicuous corner behind the soybean jar.
It was filled with an unknown golden liquid.
Suizi’s mouth dropped open in surprise.
The wide-mouthed glass bottle, wide as a can’s lid, was used to store orange juice.
Hidden away so discreetly, Jingting must have planned to throw it away without Suizi noticing.
As Jingting passed Suizi, she pinched his waist. You sneak!
He had deliberately led her thoughts to the soybean jar. He was too bad!
Jingting glared back at her, his look saying: You’re more concerned about the soybean jar than your own husband! We’ll settle this score later!
Upon seeing such a large amount of liquor, the auntie’s eyes lit up.
Oh my, how long is this supply going to last?!
When did Tiegen ever become this generous~
Worried that Yu Jingting might change his mind, she quickly took the elixir. Holding it in her hand, she felt it was warm and the color seemed a little off.
"Why is it still warm?"
"Just reheated it. This is a new formula, to be taken according to a treatment plan, it works well."
"Pfft!" Suizi couldn’t hold back her laughter. She turned around, leaning against the rim of the soy sauce jar, and burst into laughter.
He’s such a tease.
"No wonder, the color is different. Alright, then I’m leaving." Fearful that Yu Jingting might claim back this "new formula", the lady quickly scurried off.
"Aren’t you shameless?" Once the lady was gone, Suizi pushed Yu Jingting, laughing as she said so.
Yu Jingting grunted and pulled her into his arms.
"You should thank her for bearing the brunt of my anger! Or else your little mouth would be in trouble, you won’t be able to keep it!"
He reached out to hold her chin, moving it slightly from side to side. The more he looked at her face, the more he liked it, the more he wanted to kiss her—
"Eew!" Suizi dodged his hand in disgust.
"Don’t touch my face with your hand!"
Yu Jingting gave a naughty grin.
"This is the hand I used to hold the bottle—ow!"
Suizi stomped on his foot and rushed out of the room, letting the wind cool her flushed face. She reached the door of the barn and suddenly turned around.
Fearing that she would lock him out again, Yu Jingting stepped forward, leaned in with his forehead against hers, baring his teeth threateningly.
"Lady, what trick are you up to now?"
"No, I just suddenly thought, how did you get it in?"
"Damn!"
Yu Jingting rushed past her, striding towards the house.
Suizi was relentless, trailing behind him, grilling him with questions.
At the door, an irritated Yu Jingting turned around, planting his hand at her ribs, his expression threatening.
"Miss Chen, are you playing dumb?"
The shameless comment from Yu Jingting rendered Suizi dumbstruck, leaving her standing agape. This bumbling look pleased Yu Jingting; he leaned down to nibble her lower lip, his frustration finally easing.
It flared up quickly and faded just as swiftly. Seeing her fearlessly provoking him despite being utterly defenseless made him too amused to be angry.
"Come in for dinner—oops!" Jiaojiao pushed the door to call in her brother and sister-in-law. Seeing the two in a compromising position, she quickly shielded her eyes to peek through her fingers, "Brother, you’re so shameless."
Suizi broke loose from Yu Jingting, standing aside with Jiaojiao and pointing a finger at Yu Jingting in protest.
"Jiaojiao, help sister-in-law scold him for five minutes, sister-in-law will give you five cents!"
Jiaojiao got excited and began to chastise her brother.
"Brother, you’re the most shameless brother I’ve ever seen. Brother! Stand still, let me scold you for five cents’ worth!"
The sound of Wang Cuihua reprimanding Yu Jingting for bullying his sister came from inside the house. Suizi stood at the door laughing heartily.
She loved this family so much. The harmonious and loving atmosphere was simply wonderful.
After dinner, the lady had not returned yet. Suizi calculated that she must be planning to take the "new formula" after dinner, so it hadn’t been exposed yet.
"How far is your aunt’s house from ours?"
"Just a few minutes by foot."
With scratch marks from his mother on his left cheek and bite marks from his sister on his right hand, coupled with his ’cold’ expression as he pretended to be in a cold war with his wife, he was a ludicrous sight.
"Ah, then she must be on her way—Jingting, do you want to come with me?"
"Heh, you want to go into the wild? To compensate me?" Yu Jingting’s chilly demeanor bore a touch of wickedness; it wasn’t a bad idea.
"No, I want you to help me solve the issue of our neighbors stealing our rabbits."
