Chapter 824: Chapter 824 This Hoodwinking is a Last Resort
Suizi straightened her clothes and hugged the bag she carried with her.
Inside it was over ten thousand in cash of her own, and also fifty thousand given to her by Fourth Master.
It was only a third of the money owed to the farmers.
With just one glance, Suizi could tell that these farmers had been incited to come here and make trouble. Even if she offered them a third right away, they wouldn’t stop there.
"Remember what I said, do not show any hint of sadness. Remember to back me up."
"Yes!"
Suizi pulled open the car door and, regardless of her true feelings inside, walked out with ease, showing no sign of defeat.
"Everyone, quiet down! This is our Boss’s wife, make way for her!"
Zhang De cleared a path next to Suizi. The farmers shouting slogans quieted down and made way for Suizi and Zhang De to enter, then quickly closed ranks behind them.
Now Suizi was surrounded by a group of farmers with menacing looks, some of them holding hoes and other tools in their hands.
Seeing such a scene, even Zhang De, a big man, felt fearful standing there.
The company’s rolling shutter was pulled down. People inside had been watching the situation outside. Seeing that Suizi was surrounded, several men from inside rushed out.
The Boss was gone; they couldn’t let the sister-in-law get beaten up.
Suizi signaled to Zhang De, instructing him to manage the emotions of their brothers. She noticed that fourth and fifth brothers were holding dust cloths and brooms, and before anyone paid attention to them, she quickly asked Zhang De to have the brothers put away their items to avoid escalating the conflict.
"You’re the Boss’s wife? Your man took the money and ran off. We need an explanation from you!"
"The man is gone, and you send a woman out to fool us?"
Someone in the crowd took the lead to shout, stirring up the crowd’s emotions, and they began chanting "Give us back our hard-earned money" again.
Suizi made a mental note of the few who were leading the chants, intending to investigate privately who had been inciting them.
"Everybody calm down, if you keep this up, our Boss’s wife can’t speak. Be quiet— don’t you want the money?" Zhang De yelled at the top of his lungs.
His last sentence managed to quiet down the chaotic scene once again.
The brothers, having put down their "weapons", squeezed through the crowd to Suizi’s side, and she looked at each one of them gratefully.
In such a moment, standing by her side to protect her, it wasn’t about the face of Chen Hansui, it was about the foundation her man had built.
"Everyone, the reason I came here is to congratulate you all," Suizi finally began, smiling, once complete silence fell.
After dropping this line, there was silence for two seconds. Following that, the crowd exploded.
Some even started swearing.
"You’re really too much! We’re about to lose everything, and you say congratulations?"
"Why bother talking to a woman? If we don’t see the money today, this place will be a bloodbath!"
Even Yu Jingting’s brothers were sweating coldly on Suizi’s behalf, with the second brother especially wanting to step forward and take over to control the situation.
Their own people couldn’t understand why the sister-in-law came up and poked at everyone’s sore spot. What was she trying to do?
Old Three grabbed Old Two and shook his head at him.
Seeing the commotion opposite them, Suizi always maintained a smile, appearing completely at ease, which left the people across from her unable to figure her out.
"Everyone, be quiet for a moment, I have a few questions to ask," said an elder who seemed very prestigious from the opposite side.
"Little girl, why are you congratulating us? This is a place for men to talk; let your man speak if he hasn’t run off. He should say something."
"I’m congratulating everyone because the profit from this deal exceeded our original expectations. On the international CME exchange, corn futures prices hit a new high. Simply put, everyone’s earnings will be even higher than what we originally discussed!"
Suizi spoke with a very professional attitude, though her words were meant to bamboozle; even though those standing opposite were a group of farmers who couldn’t understand a word she said, they were still utterly bamboozled by her incredibly authentic spiel.
They didn’t understand a thing of the whole spiel before, but everyone understood the last part about the money in hand.
"How much more will it be?" someone immediately asked.
"At least ten percent more. To be more specific, big brother, how much were you supposed to get initially?"
"My family has 12 mu of land, yielding 600 catties per mu. After paying the public grain, we gave everything to you. Our whole family’s livelihood for the second half of the year depends on this. If you run off, my entire family will have to hang themselves!"
The big brother responding to Suizi didn’t directly answer her question; instead, he squatted on the ground, covering his face, looking utterly dejected.
After finally looking forward to the distribution of land to households and thinking they could catch a fast train to wealth, they now faced such an issue—a level of frustration better left unsaid.
Suizi nodded in sympathy; this big brother was likely not the instigator, just like ninety percent of the people here who were honest and hardworking farmers.
Both morally and logically, she and Yu Jingting couldn’t harm these people. After all, both she and he were also peasants who had come out from the village.
"Let me do the math for you. With 12 mu of land producing 600 catties each, deducting the local public grain standard and subtracting the family’s necessities, our purchasing price is 0.35 yuan per kilogram. Originally, you should have had 700 yuan in hand, but because I came, you and everyone here will see an increase in income. Taking you as an example, you’ll earn at least 800 yuan this time. Folks, do you understand what an extra 100 yuan means?"
Suizi’s voice wasn’t particularly loud, but everyone was spellbound, even Jingting’s brothers were all stunned.
Is this... is this the quiet sister-in-law they knew?
"A hundred yuan, based on our local prices, can buy four little piglets, with some to spare. In these past two years, the quality of feed has been improving. For us farmers, raising a single pig until the end of the year can cover a part of the family’s expenses. If four pigs are raised until they’re big, what does that mean?"
Suizi stood there flaunting her knowledge reserves and her normally hidden eloquence.
The example was so pertinent to the farmers’ lives that most of them were drawn in, imagining their future along with her reasoning.
Talking about an extra 100 yuan alone might not be that attractive, but once she painted a larger picture, they really started to feel hopeful about the future.
"How can you guarantee they will grow up? How much grain will four little piglets need to eat?"
Suizi was waiting for just this question.
"Folks, you’ve asked the right person. Both my husband and I come from humble backgrounds, and we grew up in the village just like you. We’ve experienced the life you’re living now, and we understand your difficulties. We’re also willing to put in the effort to help everyone resolve these issues with the knowledge we learned at school."
Suizi pulled out her trump card from her bag.
It was her and Jingting’s graduation certificates, with the red covers and the school’s name embossed in gold standing out conspicuously. This was the trump card Suizi had to play reluctantly.
In an era that valued knowledge, these two red certificates were very influential.
Sure enough, the crowd quieted down a few notches.
