I am chasing a rough man in the 80s
Chapter 791: What’s it Like When There’s No Cold War?

Chapter 791: Chapter 791: What’s it Like When There’s No Cold War?

If the subtle battles happening amongst a few households were to be viewed as a battleground, her actions today would almost amount to betraying her own side and siding with the enemy.

Given the fact that she was unfamiliar with the situation, telling the opponents about the secrets of her household was not something someone as capable as Suizi should have done.

Suizi bit her lip, awaiting Yu Jingting’s response.

If he criticized her a few times now, or even argued with her, she would deserve it.

However, Yu Jingting only said a single word before falling silent. As he saw Suizi standing there, a guilty expression etched upon her face, he went ahead to take over her unfinished task of cooking.

Suizi stood there like a child who had done something wrong, feeling confused and helpless, watching him handling the wok.

In her memory, Yu Jingting’s cooking skills weren’t exactly good, barely enough to cook a proper meal. Yet now, he seemed expertly comfortable flipping the wok.

Despite having done nothing phenomenal, the effect of his actions was greater than if he had done something significant.

As Yu Jingting finished cooking, he saw Suizi with red-rimmed eyes, sighed, and mentally scolded himself.

He had resolved to let her clear her own thoughts, to give her some time to reflect calmly.

But he was on the verge of loosening his resolve.

This woman was like a vulnerability given to him on purpose by the heavens. Once faced with her, his principles crumbled entirely.

He claimed to be letting her reflect, but the one in distress was him.

"Why are you crying? I didn’t even ask you who you would save if he and I fell into the river together. Is it really worth feeling so reluctant over?"

"It’s not like that..." Suizi, upon hearing his words, felt a surge of tears.

"I want to succeed in everything, but I’ve messed everything up. I became too greedy. I wanted it all. I want to protect our home with you, but I can’t let go of the life-saving grace from my past life."

If this was a multiple-choice question, she had clearly chosen the wrong answer.

"Just state your concerns, why are you crying?" Yu Jingting exclaimed, feeling a deep sense of injustice at her tears.

"I was wrong. You can scold me."

"And if I scold you, will you remember and learn not to do such a thing again?"

"I’d probably do the same next time..."

Acting like the most miserable person while proclaiming absolute irresolution.

Yu Jingting was flabbergasted by her words.

"Did human evolution not include you or me? How did I end up with such a stubborn girl in my house?"

"There’s no such thing as pure friendship between a man and a woman--unless the woman is so ugly that she renders people speechless."

These words hit Suizi hard, she took a while to decode the twists and turns within the sentence.

"Jingting, you’re not....jealous, are you?"

Yu Jingting murmured an internal curse. Without having to look into a mirror, he knew that his expression from jealousy must have been distasteful--jealous people aren’t made to look good.

"Chen Hansui, use your clever mind to think about this. If I spent my day hanging out with other women, discussing poetry, singing songs, and life philosophies, would you feel comfortable if I returned and told you it was only friendship and you shouldn’t over think it?"

This dialogue completely baffled Suizi.

Suizi was preoccupied during dinner pondering on various scenarios.

She realized that if she were to swap her tea and chat times with Dayu with images of Yu Jingting hanging out with other women, she would feel a wave of annoyance rising. The things she had thought were guilt-free suddenly seemed unjustifiable.

"Mom has almost crushed the crab pincer..." Luoluo was the first to pick up Suizi’s odd behavior and discreetly confided in Bobo.

In imitation, Bobo also picked up a crab pincer and bit down hard, letting out an audible cry.

His lip started bleeding, and crying ensued, stirring the concern of all the elders present.

Suizi’s dazing attention was brought back her son’s cries and she joined in comforting her child.

Despite the pain clearly visible on his face, Bobo refused to cry, extending his little placated hand towards Suizi.

Suizi initially thought that her son wanted to be held, and quickly pulled him onto her lap. To her surprise, the little boy just puckered his lips and leaned in to peck her cheek lovingly.

The affectionate peck from her son left Suizi with a plethora of emotions. She quickly realized that her sensitive son had perceived her worrisome state and was trying to comfort her despite his own discomfort.

"Mom, I’m not hurting. You should be strong too." Bobo managed to say in a soft shy voice. After speaking, he immediately slipped off Suizi’s lap and went back to his small stool. Gritting his teeth against the pain, he stubbornly continued to eat his crab.

"Oh dear, sweetheart, if your lip is bleeding, stop trying to eat the crab. Grandma will peel it for you." Wang Cuihua, moved by the sight of her grandson, voluntarily took up the job of peeling the crab.

Yu Jingting put all of his peeled crabs into Suizi’s bowl. Wang Cuihua, seeing this, started mumbling.

"You’re the father here, shouldn’t you be peeling some for your son too?"

"How will our child improve if he doesn’t practice for himself? You never served me with such detail when I was young."

"But this girl is an adult, and she’s perfectly capable of peeling it herself. Why are you spoiling her?" Chen Lijun chimed in. Although she was the mother-in-law, she felt obligated to sort this out.

Yu Jingting remained silent, shooting a glance at Fan Huang, who was engrossed in peeling shrimp. Everyone had a right to speak, except for his mother-in-law.

Upon noticing Yujingting’s gaze, Fan Huang immediately spread the peeled shrimps around causing more attention but deflecting suspicion, pretending that he had peeled for more than just his wife, including the kids.

As the only outsider, Liu Yanan stared with envy at the interactions between Suizi’s family. She had never enjoyed the luxury of Shen Jun peeling shrimp for her. Of course, there were no shrimps back at Dongbei, she consoled herself.

After the meal, Suizi and her husband went into the study. Liu Yanan followed along in hopes of borrowing a couple of books.

The couple’s desks were next to each other. Suizi’s desk was littered with various English documents, and her personal abacus.

There were also a fair amount of documents on Yu Jingting’s desk. He was reviewing those while peeling a fruit. Once he was done, he silently placed the plate on Suizi’s desk.

Liu Yanan, who was browsing through the books at the side, couldn’t help commenting.

"You two have such a wonderful relationship. It feels like you both do your own things, but there’s still a thread connecting you two."

"It’s usually like that on a daily basis. But right now, we’re in a cold war," Yu Jingting solemnly declared.

"Excuse me?" Liu Yanan thought he was joking.

"Didn’t you notice? From our meal until now, I haven’t spoken a word to her. Don’t I handle that well?" He was confident about his composure.

"..." Liu Yanan’s gaze landed on the fruit plate in front of Suizi, recollecting how gleeful Yu Jingting appeared when he was peeling crabs for Suizi at dinner--he calls that a cold war?

"And how are you two when you’re not in a cold war?"

"..." Suizi could feel her cheeks heating up.

On normal days, she would sit on Yu Jingting’s lap while reading documents, or sometimes he would lie on her lap, eyes closed, listening to her read reports.

"Yanan, try this peach, it’s really delicious." Suizi changed the topic smoothly, deliberately avoiding Yu Jingting.

Yu Jingting wasn’t sure what Suizi was getting at. Noticing the carefree way she was eating and even sharing the fruit he had peeled for her, he felt a bitter taste in his mouth. Is this what people call a cold war?

Two full peaches consumed in a single breath. Judging by her appetite, she didn’t seem to be reflecting on her actions.

She was completely unaffected by the cold war. The only person suffering was him!
