Chapter 780: Tai Chi Divides into Two Principles
Chapter 780: Chapter 780: Tai Chi Divides into Two Principles
Chen’s father was in the study room, discussing ancient wisdom and current affairs with his old disciples, really fired up, when Yu Jingting and Suizi walked in.
"Grandpa, have you eaten?" Yu Jingting greeted warmly.
Seeing the two of them, his expression turned from one of pretentious bravado to mortification in a split second.
"Jing, Jingting, when did you get here?" Chen’s father stuttered.
"Just thought I’d swing by because I missed you. We’re practically family."
On hearing the words "practically family", Chen’s father’s vision blurred. Oh no, not them.
These two wretches were like harbingers of misfortune to him, always bringing trouble with their visits.
"I have guests over, maybe you two could——"
"Ah, so this is the extraordinary overseas scholar Grandmother always talks about. Good to meet you. Would you like a cigarette?" Jingting, acting like they were old friends, interrupted Chen’s father, walking up to a man sitting at the table and offering him a cigarette from his pocket.
One might mistake his enthusiasm for personal acquaintance just by the way he conducted himself.
"I don’t smoke, thanks." The young man, gracious and confident, stood up to shake Jingting’s hand, but his gaze was fixed on Suizi who was standing behind Jingting.
Suizi was wearing a light pink dress with large collars and puffy sleeves. The dress was cinched at her waist which accentuated her dainty collarbone and slender waist. With her hair styled in a princess bun, she gave off a vibrantly youthful radiance.
The pink was delicate and fresh, a color most girls favor in their youth but find hard to pull off without seeming rustic. Yet with her fair complexion, Suizi looked simply elegant in pink. Her natural gracefulness made her stand out as if she were a lady of class right out of a masterpiece painting.
Que Wuyu found it hard to take his eyes off Suizi.
Her photos had already left a deep impression on him, but she was even more breathtaking in person than in photographs. The fresh and soft sophistication that radiated from her was mesmerizing, like blooming kaffir lilies—elegant, singular, and tasteful. It was a sight one could not forget, and now he wished to take her home and keep her all to himself.
Realizing that this effeminate-looking man had been staring at Suizi for a little too long, Yu Jingting darkened his eyes, squeezing his hand secretly.
When Que Wuyu was appreciating the beauty of Suizi, he felt numbness chain his hand. As he looked at Yu Jingting, he was still smiling as warmly and friendly as ever, but if it wasn’t for the stinging pain that hit his hand, Que Wuyu would think the amicable man in front of him was a gentle and loving person.
"Pleased to meet you, I am Que Wuyu," he replied, with a twitch in the corner of his eye as he said ’pleased."
"I am Yu Jingting." Jingting released his hand.
Seeing Que Wuyu’s hand turn several shades paler, Suizi thought to herself that Jingting was really going in hard this time.
But the young man bore the pain silently, not uttering a single word of complaint, or even rubbing his hand.
Those who are hard on themselves are probably hard on others as well. This thought suddenly popped into Suizi’s mind. As she looked at Que Wuyu, she found herself recognizing him.
The man was only slightly shorter than Jingting, tall by ordinary standards. Unlike Jingting, who was toned from purposeful training, he was thin.
His frame was accentuated by the oversized white shirt he wore. With deep-set double eyelids, mournful eyes, and a tear mole at the corners, he gave off a sense of fragile gentleness, as if he could not endure the biting cold wind.
When he stood next to Jingting, the stark contrast was very visually striking, as if representing the yin and yang of Tai Chi—two contrasting styles of men.
Their temperaments were poles apart, but they both had a magnetism that drew people in.
But the more Suizi looked at him, the more familiar he seemed.
"Have we met before?" Suizi finally asked. She even felt that this man, dressed in white like snow, was more familiar to her than her own grandparents.
"I also feel like I’ve seen you before. Perhaps we met in a previous life." Que Wuyu answered with a smile, extending his hand to shake Suizi’s.
Immediately, Jingting stepped in front of Suizi naturally and shook hands with Que Wuyu again.
Que Wuyu’s eyes widened slightly, and the fading mark on his hand turned white again.
"So even an overseas returnee like you reads ’Dream of the Red Chamber’, huh?"
"Mere pleasantries. I’m afraid I’ve made you laugh." Que Wuyu smiled politely.
This light-hearted banter might seem calm on the surface, but beneath lay a whirlpool of emotions. A word or two could quickly stir up a storm.
Jingting’s tactics were crafty, but Que Wuyu was not inferior. He had a way of turning Jingting’s aggression into a sign of insecurity.
"Is this really the first time you two have met?"
Chen’s father could hardly get a word in edgewise and was puzzled by how quickly the two had hit it off. Their handshake had lasted unusually long.
"Maybe he saw me in his past life too?" Yu Jingting jested, though his smile did not reach his eyes.
"Perhaps." Que Wuyu replied with an equally cold smile.
"Teacher, I will visit again another day. I won’t bother you further today."
As Chen’s father hurriedly saw him off, Que Wuyu said to Jingting:
"Brother Yu, we have a long way to go."
As he walked past Suizi, Que Wuyu paused.
His eyes twinkled as he gazed at her intently. He said nothing, but the corners of his mouth curved up slightly.
Suizi saw a strange, gloomy look in his eyes, tinged with a hint of sorrow. Piqued by her curiosity, she kept her eyes on him as he left.
"Still watching him? Should I call him back and make a room for you two to discuss classic literature?"
Jingting said disapprovingly. As her intimate confidant, he could tell something was not quite right with Suizi.
"I was just curious, he feels strangely familiar. Are you sure we haven’t met before?"
Suizi was intrigued by Que Wuyu’s gaze, but she couldn’t figure out what it meant.
"Stop being curious about him. It’s not good for a woman to be interested in a man other than her husband."
Suizi pursed her lips. She could sense his displeasure. Since she woke up, he had never spoken to her so sternly before.
"I don’t like it when you order me around." Suizi was upset; this feeling was very alien to her.
He must never have been so harsh with her future self. Should she rejoice at having paved the way for such a first?
Seeing Suizi upset, Yu Jingting regretted his actions immediately.
He had brought Suizi here hoping she would see the reality of the literati, and expose Chen’s father’s true colors and his mother’s unhappiness.
Instead, he inadvertently exposed her to that pretty boy, Que Wuyu.
Growing up with Suizi, he knew that Que Wuyu was right up her alley.
Had it been the Suizi of old, he would have been confident. After all these years, their relationship had a solid foundation and she would have eyes for no other man.
But Suizi’s memories only went up to age 17 now. From her conversation with Liu Yanan, it was clear that she was attracted to men like Que Wuyu.
