Chapter 778: Chapter 778 Don’t Learn from the Unrespectable (500+ Monthly Tickets Update)
Liu Yanan and her husband came to stay with Suizi.
Her father-in-law was having surgery at the hospital, and it would take over ten days for the old man to recover. Trying to help them save on accommodation expenses, Suizi offered her place as a temporary base.
While they took care of the elderly man in the hospital, they could cook some soup and meals at her house. Suizi cleaned up a guest room for them, so they could take turns resting.
Having a friend like Suizi when away from home to seek medical treatment can save much trouble and money.
Suizi’s house was a large courtyard-style dwelling with numerous rooms. Suizi prepared the East Wing room for them, which was not too close to the main house and, thus, wouldn’t intrude on each other’s living space.
Liu Yanan still had her talkative habit from her school days. As soon as she entered the house, she started chatting with Suizi about all sorts of things. Through these chats, Suizi also learned much about Liu Yanan’s recent life.
One of the benefits of chatting with talkative people is that one doesn’t need to worry about revealing any secrets. Liu Yanan swiftly took control of the conversation, leaving Suizi just to listen.
At this moment, Yu Jingting was chatting away with Shen Jun in the courtyard; leaving only the two women in the house. When Liu Yanan saw the fresh bedding and new toiletries, she choked up a little and, holding Suizi’s hand, said,
"Suizi, you’re so thoughtful of me... I’ve wanted to tell you something for a long time. I owe you an apology."
"Huh?" Suizi responded in surprise.
"When Shen Jun was pursuing you, I knew you liked his scholarly type. But I badmouthed him in front of you and disrupted your potential relationship... even though deep down I was attracted to him. After all these years, you still treat me as a friend and keep correspondence with me, each time I read your letters, I feel guilty."
At this point, Liu Yanan broke down in tears.
She had kept these thoughts to herself for a long time. Whenever she tried to confess to Suizi in a letter, she didn’t have the courage to do so.
Suizi was her best friend, and she was afraid that she might lose this friendship if she confessed.
"Well... I do like scholarly guys, but I don’t like Shen Jun."
Suizi intended to argue that Shen Jun was far from a scholar, but she felt saying so might be too cruel.
"So, you really don’t like Shen Jun? That makes sense... Your current marriage is so blissful. Jingting is so good to you, and he’s also a scholar from Tsinghua University. Every day you two must be amidst joy and beauty, probably reading and reciting poetry together, right?"
"Well..." Suizi hesitated.
Suizi thought about Yu Jingting’s recent spur-of-the-moment poems. If being creative in crafting awkward verses counted as a skill, then Yu Jingting could indeed be considered outstanding.
He was so articulate that no one could survive his verbal onslaught.
"Confessing this has eased my conscience. Seeing that you’re living a good life, I feel less guilty. However, given the hardships I’ve faced in recent years, perhaps it’s divine punishment for what I’ve done."
Liu Yanan choked up a few times and couldn’t continue.
From her demeanor and words, Suizi sensed that Yanan had not had a good life in recent years. But she didn’t pry, knowing that Yanan would open up when she was ready.
It’s true that people’s fortunes and misfortunes become visible on their faces as they age.
Yanan, once a pretty young girl, now looked haggard. Still in her twenties, she had a lifeless look on her face.
After chatting with Yanan for a while, Suizi saw her off as she left to tend to the hospitalized patient with the soup Suizi had prepared. Yanan’s husband, Shen Jun, stayed behind to tidy up.
However, looking through the shoji screens, Suizi saw him lying on the bed, fast asleep, with all their luggage strewn across the floor, probably leaving it to Yanan to clean up later.
It wasn’t until the next morning that Yanan returned, and Suizi invited them to breakfast.
In the Yu family, everyone got a salted duck egg for breakfast. Shen Jun scooped out the yolk and put it in his bowl, leaving only the egg white for Yanan.
Suizi lost her appetite at this sight.
She remembered that Yanan didn’t like the egg whites of salted duck eggs. Back in school, when salted duck eggs were a luxury, Yanan always left the egg white until there was no other food left to eat.
Seeing Yanan munching on the leftovers without batting an eye, Suizi felt a lump in her throat. She wanted to say something but swallowed her words.
No wonder Yanan had gained weight - was she just a human leftover disposal unit at home?
After breakfast, Suizi intended to hang out with Yanan, but she rushed into her room to pack up her luggage.
The luggage looked the same as the day before Suizi had seen it - Shen Jun hadn’t touched it at all, leaving it for Liu Yanan to sort through.
The couple had agreed to take turns to look after the ill elder. Now that Yanan had returned, it was Shen Jun’s turn to head to the hospital.
However, after breakfast Shen Jun went into the toilet with a newspaper and spent half an hour there.
Only after Yanan had repeatedly urged him did he reluctantly emerge, complaining about the inconvenience. He left with the soup Suizi had prepared in advance, without even thanking her.
"Well, that guy... he’s a regular poop factory, isn’t he?" Wang Cuihua couldn’t help complaining to Suizi, "If Tiegen were ever this lazy, I’d beat him with a shoe."
Wang Cuihua was forthright and strong-willed. Suizi got along well with her because she herself was perfectionistic. However, the unsophisticated Wang Cuihua wouldn’t be easy to get along with for most people.
From the moment Shen Jun moved in, Wang Cuihua found him disagreeable. She used her complaints to Suizi as a way to scold Yu Jingting indirectly.
"Could you please stop implying things when you’re chatting! What did I do to deserver upset you?" Yu Jingting felt wrongly accused.
"I’m just giving you a heads-up. You’ve been behaving well these years, so don’t start acting like those lazy, useless men out there who do nothing at home but expect preferential treatment. They eat the good parts and leave the rest to their wives—"
Wang Cuihua grew animated as she continued.
"Take a plate of fried liver tips, for example. You eat the liver and leave the chili peppers to Suizi. You have a plate of braised meat, and you eat the lean parts and leave the fatty ones to Suizi. You eat the filling of a stuffed pancake and leave the crust—"
"Grandma, I love the crust. Give it to me!" Bobo, who happened to be passing by, raised his hand immediately.
Wang Cuihua took the opportunity to lift her grandson into her arms. Education, she believed, should start from childhood.
"When you grow up, Bobo, never become a selfish man. Share the good things with your family. Even if it’s just a plate of food, if you don’t eat it then someone else has to. If you take advantage once, is it fair to expect to take advantage all the time? Accumulate too many, and you will eventually suffer a great loss. The same is true in life. If you do more of the tiring chores at home, your family will have fewer chores."
This set of simple life principles might not be eloquent, but they were filled with wisdom. Watching Wang Cuihua, Suizi couldn’t help liking this wise elder.
After lecturing her son and grandson, Wang Cuihua still seemed unsatisfied. She went to Liu Yanan’s room, using tidying up as an excuse to lecture her and give her some "soul chicken soup."
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Suizi asked Yu Jingting. After her mother-in-law left, he kept giving her weird looks.
