Chapter 686: Chapter 686: Try and Die (Monthly Pass 500+ Updates)
In an era without mobile communication devices, it was really troublesome that information couldn’t be relayed to others in a timely manner.
Now, the folks back home know that Suizi is safe, but Yu Jingting doesn’t.
He must be searching for her right now. If only Suizi had a cell phone to reach him immediately.
The wait was long and nerve-wracking.
The room had everything except a radio and TV or newspapers. Suizi and Jiaojiao would simply stare at each other, or look out towards the sea. When they got bored, Suizi would recite classics to Jiaojiao.
As evening began to fall, and the full moon emerged over the sea, Suizi just finished telling the story of the "Moon and Sixpence".
Jiaojiao was left confused.
"I don’t get it. To pursue art, one must abandon his wife and children? What kind of logic is that? This rotten capitalism...."
Jiaojiao had apparently picked up the use of ’rotten capitalism’ from Suizi, who often joked about it.
Suizi shrugged.
"Among the numerous sixpences on the ground, only the protagonist saw the moon. He was indeed a dream chaser, but that doesn’t necessarily make him a good person."
"Huh," Jiaojiao chuckled evidently amused by some thought.
"From what I see, my brother is a true individualist. Where others would simply admire the moon, he would literally rope it down to earth, gather all the sixpence coins around him into a Gold Mountain and chill with his moon amidst the wealth."
And of course, she was referring to the very perfect Suizi as the moon.
The imagery of the scene as described by Jiaojiao was so humorous that Suizi couldn’t help but giggle. Upon second thought, she did agree that Yu Jingting was indeed such a person.
He knew clearly what he wanted, pursued his aspirations, and worked diligently towards them.
"Our mother often has discussions about Buddhism and mentioned a term, ’Egoism’, which is said to be the root of all suffering. Would my brother’s affection for you count as his personal attachment? Why do I never see him in any distress?" Jiaojiao posed.
Suizi gasped, struggling to form a response to Jiaojiao’s seemingly out-of-topic question.
"Even 11, 12 year olds start to explore Buddhism now?!"
"I don’t understand it either, just find it a bit fascinating."
Jiaojiao’s question had certainly triggered some deep-thinking in Suizi.
The old man who brought her here seemed to be deeply entangled in ’Egoism’, rejecting his fate and constantly attempting to prolong his lifespan. From her perspective, he was in considerable distress.
Yu Jingting, however, was also a man of strong attachment yet lived contentedly every day. What made the difference?
This train of thought, tinged with Buddhist philosophy, helped distract Suizi’s attention, helping to pass some time unnoticed.
It was already 10 PM, and there was no sign of Yu Jingting. Jiaojiao, quickly glancing at Suizi’s wristwatch, was getting worried.
According to the agreed time, they only had an hour left. However, there were still no signs of Yu Jingting, raising concerns of whether he would make it in time. If he didn’t, what would happen to Suizi?
"Sister-in-law, tell them I can go in your place."
"Trust your brother, and also trust me. If he doesn’t make it, your sister-in-law has an escape plan." Suizi maintained her composure on the surface, but inside, she was already preparing for the worst-case scenario.
At this point, the worst-case scenario would mean ensuring Jiaojiao’s safety. If she really couldn’t escape, saving Jiaojiao would be a victory in itself.
However, Suizi was well aware that her captors may use Jiaojiao as a bargaining chip. Escaping with Jiaojiao unharmed would be highly unlikely.
When necessary, she might have to play tough.
Suizi slipped her hand into her pocket, touching the pieces of broken glass inside.
With her prince still en-route, she wouldn’t mind turning into a dragon-slaying princess if the situation called for it.
Just as Suizi was deep in thought, a burst of footsteps came from the hallway outside and her grandmother’s voice filtered through the wooden door.
"Get them out! Now!"
Suizi’s heart skipped a beat. There were still two hours until midnight, something must have happened.
The door swung open, and two burly men rushed in under her grandmother’s lead. Without saying a word, they aggressively tied up Suizi and Jiaojiao and forced them left and right into a different room.
In this room, Suizi saw the legendary old master.
He was so thin that he barely weighed more than air, lying half-dead on the bed like a skeleton covered in skin. It was so scary that Jiaojiao shivered.
"Father, I’ve brought the people."
The skeleton-like man on the bed had his eyes shut. His breathing was odd, erratic, sometimes long and sometimes short.
Just by looking, Suizi could tell he was on his deathbed.
No wonder her grandmother had changed the time; it looked like the old man was running out of battery.
Around the old man, numerous red threads hung vertically from the ceiling to the floor, each with a bell tied to it.
The room was tightly sealed with no natural wind to speak of, but the moment Suizi entered, the bells started ringing on their own.
"Sister-in-law, I’m a bit scared..." Jiaojiao found the sound of the bells creepy, sending a chill down her spine.
However, Suizi wasn’t focused on the bells at all.
Each of the numerous red threads formed a hexagram with an antique oil lamp at its center.
The lamp was palm-sized, emitting a peculiar scent as the unknown oil burned in it.
Suizi’s eyebrows furrowed as she had an idea of what the oil might be. A feeling of nauseousness suddenly hit her.
She glanced at Jiaojiao beside her, deciding to keep this newfound realization a secret, hoping to spare her the trauma.
"Chen Hansui, if you want the child beside you to live, you’d better cooperate. You can’t resist whatever we’ll do soon." The grandmother signalled the man guarding Jiaojiao, who then pulled out a knife. But before he could do anything, Suizi quickly headbutted his chin.
Using her height to her advantage, she put extra force into the headbutt, causing the man to stagger backwards in pain, even causing him to bite his tongue...
Taking advantage of the confusion, Suizi darted to the old man’s bed, whipped out her glass shards, and held it threateningly near the old man’s throat.
"Let my sister-in-law go!"
"You...you wouldn’t dare!" The grandmother hadn’t expected Suizi to pull such a move.
"Want to try?" She pressed the shard against the old man’s throat, causing his already irregular breathing to become even more erratic. It was apparent that his condition was worsening.
The grandmother, afraid she might actually cut him, quickly ordered the thug to put his knife away. Leaving only Jiaojiao hostage for negotiation.
"Release the child, now!" Suizi commanded, back against the window, her attention solely on the old man on the bed.
"Sister-in-law, watch out!" Jiaojiao cried out.
Suddenly, a figure emerged from beneath the bed. One of them was the master they had seen earlier. He pushed Suizi causing her to drop the piece of glass. Displaying a sinister smile, the master pulled out a rope and attempted to shove it onto Suizi’s neck.
"Ah!" The master suddenly retracted his hand with a howl of pain.
Opening her eyes, Suizi saw Yu Jingting, standing under the moonlight with a slingshot in hand.
