I am chasing a rough man in the 80s
Chapter 617: What a Little Smart Aleck

Chapter 617: Chapter 617: What a Little Smart Aleck

Suizi was only gone for the time it took to play a chess game, and when she turned around, Yu Jingting had disappeared.

After a while, Yu Jingting came back whistling.

"What’s with that look?" he asked.

Suizi was looking at him suspiciously. It was the kind of comfortable expression he usually had after he had either done some mischief or gone out to stir up trouble. In short, an expression of pleasure he usually had after dopamine release.

"Did you go out and break someone’s window?" she asked.

"!!!"

Suizi blinked her eyes. Indeed, she guessed it right.

At this moment, the chess game between Chen Lijun and Fan Huang was in a deadlock. Seeing that Chen Lijun was about to lose again, without waiting for Fan Huang to switch the positions of the chess pieces on the board, she kicked the chessboard away.

"This is boring, I quit." Chen Lijun stood up, leaving Fan Huang behind and went to find her two obedient grandsons.

Yu Jingting, hand on his hip, smirked at Suizi.

His expression clearly stated, what’s the point in mimicking these bootlickers?

Compared to pacifying his wronged wife at home, he preferred to get into fights with anyone who made her cry, ensuring they’d regret it.

After eating, Yu Jingting brought out a ladder and climbed onto the roof, claiming to bask in the sun.

Suizi took Chen Lijun’s place in the chess game with Fan Huang.

Suizi’s chess skills were much better than her mother’s, but she was still far behind Fan Huang. He allowed her a significant handicap and only then did she manage to draw with him.

Playing chess with such an intelligent person was very taxing. She noticed that Fan Huang would think many moves in advance, which made him as unpredictable as his character. Suizi struggled when playing chess with him.

Chen Lijun stood behind Suizi and watched for a while, her eyes drifting, likely lost in thought.

Wang Cuihua sat with her three children in a row eating melons, looking over at the two chess players from a distance, and the more she watched, the more puzzled she became, as she started to count on her fingers and mumbled to herself.

"What are you mumbling about?" asked Yu Shuisheng.

Wang Cuihua gestured towards Suizi with her chin.

"Don’t you think Suizi and Fan Huang look remarkably alike?"

From their sitting postures to the way they rested their chins on their hands, from the side, they looked very similar.

"Pay attention to Suizi’s finger movements - one beat, two beats...isn’t it exactly like Fan Huang?"

What Wang Cuihua was calculating was the frequency of Suizi’s finger movements; she had learnt some musical terminologies from listening to Jiaojiao play the piano.

"What’s all this ’one beat, two beats’? They’re from the same family, of course they look alike. What’s so strange about that?"

"How’s that not strange? Suizi bumped into Fan Huang’s son once, and I was watching them so closely my eyeballs were about to fall out, but I didn’t see any resemblance. Just like last time, our Tiegen got into a fight with Fan Huang’s son, and I thought that boy looked nothing like our Suizi. He has a pretty face but isn’t of much use."

"Oh...you’ve been watching that pretty boy so much your eyeballs are about to fall out?" Yu Shuisheng distilled his wife’s words, drawing the jealous conclusion that she’s been eyeing this pretty boy.

"Hey, what the hell are you thinking? I’ve got my own man, why would I look at him?"

"Hmm, you should indeed stay away from such useless pretty boys." Yu Shuisheng whispered into Wang Cuihua’s ear.

"What?! Just five minutes?!" Wang Cuihua exclaimed, skittishly covering her mouth and looked nervously towards Chen Lijun and her daughter’s direction.

Thankfully, Suizi, busy playing chess, didn’t notice her mother-in-law’s weird behaviour.

Wang Cuihua was tongue-tied, she lowered her voice and asked him.

"How did you know that? Don’t tell me you’re just jealous that he’s better-looking and spreading rumors?"

"Ha, do you think I’m that shallow? Once he was leading a girl student behind the firewood pile, I happened to be passing by and squatted down to watch for a while..."

Wang Cuihua was rendered speechless. Well, what a surprising revelation indeed.

"No wonder Tiegen likes to eavesdrop in the corner, tolerate him okay?" Wang Cuihua digests this huge gossip, instantly understanding why Chen Lijun dumped Fan Hui.

"Mom, what’s that?" Jiaojiao asked.

Luoluo, sitting next to her, curiously watched the adults whispering, pointing at her grandma: "So weird!"

Grandma’s expression is weird, not the usual grandma!

"Oh, what a sin, this isn’t something you children should hear. What’s with kids eavesdropping on adults? Go eat your melon! Look at how easygoing Bobo is."

Bobo is focused on eating his watermelon, not even raising his head.

With two teeth barely grown, his dedication to eating melon is truly something, not a single gossip could defeat food in his heart.

"But I’m still curious, what’s this about a pile of firewood?"

Wang Cuihua stiffened her face.

"Have you finished your homework? Done with your piano practice? Once you’re done, go out and play. A big girl like you shouldn’t always be cooped up at home, you need to run and jump around to grow."

"Huh??? Mom, that’s not how you put it when you called me back!"

What her mom said earlier was: You’re a grown girl, stop running around outside, you’ll get too tanned, and no one will want you.

"I’m your mother, I say whatever I want to say. Go, go go, hurry and go play!" Wang Cuihua shooed her daughter away. JiaoJiao took Luoluo away as well, leaving the focused Bobo to continue eating his melon.

After shooing her daughter away, the stern mother’s expression seamlessly morphs into a gossipy one.

"Keep going, the story about the pile of firewood."

With Jiaojiao not around, Yu Shuisheng didn’t have to whisper. Since Suizi was on the other end of the courtyard, and couldn’t hear, he quietly recounted what he had seen that year.

Wang Cuihua was dumbfounded. She was astounded by Yu Shuisheng’s vivid description of the events.

"If he’s really like what you said, why is he always playing around outside, messing with things that don’t matter?"

"You, of all people, used to read fortunes for others, and yet you obviously don’t get men. The more competent they are, the less they’re inclined to mess around. When have you ever seen me or Tiegen mess around? This is what they call, the stronger the urge, the more incapable, the more they want to prove themselves."

"That... actually makes some sense..." Wang Cuihua stroked her chin, becoming more curious. Just then, Chen Lijun came over.

Wang Cuihua shooed Yu Shuisheng away.

"Off you go, go look after the kid."

Yu Shuisheng rolled his eyes. This woman, discarding him after using him. Too cool-hearted, isn’t she?

"Lijun, let me ask you something--" Wang Cuihua whispered in Chen Lijun’s ear, eager to confirm if the gossip she heard was true.

Chen Lijun paused, then raised an eyebrow.

"Since you’re so curious, why don’t you try it yourself? Why ask me?"

Wang Cuihua scoffed, "I’m not without a man. I’m just purely curious."

"How about we exchange information, you tell me, and I’ll tell you, okay?"

No one could outdo Chen Lijun’s sharp tongue. Wang Cuihua’s face burned at her words, and she turned and went inside, no longer wanting to engage with her.

"I haven’t tried it either. How am I supposed to tell you?" Chen Lijun muttered to herself, looking down to meet Bobo’s wide, black eyes.

"Done eating, Bobo? Let’s go, grandma will take you to your sisters." Chen Lijun meticulously wiped Bobo’s face clean and led him out to join Jiaojiao and Luoluo.

"Hey, what are they whispering about? I want to hear too." Jiaojiao was still curious about her father and mother’s whispers, what on earth were they saying?

"Veggies, urge..." Bobo tried to recall his grandparent’s conversation, then added his grandma’s remark, "Grandma didn’t try."

Well, string these together, just so much was said.
