Chapter 579: Chapter 579: Seeing What Shouldn’t Be Seen (Thanks to Rifle Bullet +2 more updates)
In Yu Jingting’s eyes, his wife was arguably the saint of D City, never holding grudges with anyone and always modest at work. Everyone at his factory loved her.
Such a great woman shouldn’t have any deadly quarrels with anyone.
"I will call Uncle Fan later to see if they’ve set her up."
Suizi nodded, as this was the only lead they could investigate at the moment.
Jiaojiao accidentally overate during the picnic, and felt bloatedly sick afterwards, so Suizi and Yu Jingting took her to the maternity and child healthcare center for some digestive medicine.
Yu Jingting kept teasing Jiaojiao on the way.
"You’re old enough to know better when it comes to eating. Our family has been out of poverty for a long time, yet you still gorge yourself senseless on good food, tsk."
"Sister-in-law..." Jiaojiao leaned against her brother’s back, feebly waved at Suizi’s arm.
Her condition looked pitiful, making Suizi very distressed.
Suizi slapped Yu Jingting in annoyance.
"Look at you, such an irresponsible older brother!"
Jiaojiao buried her head in her brother’s back, giggling quietly.
Yu Jingting pretended to lose grip, effectively scaring Jiaojiao into tightening her hold around his neck. Upon realizing his prank, Jiaojiao got so mad that she began to strangle him. Yu Jingting, half-choking, was about to counterattack when Suizi yanked him away.
"Look at her strength, does it look as if she’s fainting? You could just let this little bunny walk by herself!" Yu Jingting pretended to abandon his sister, but he was holding her steadfastly.
"Just cherish these moments. In time, she’ll grow up and you won’t have the chance to carry her anymore. Jiaojiao wanting you to carry her is an honor for an older brother like you."
"Men really have no place in this household, I finally see that now." Yu Jingting, as a man perpetually at the bottom of the family food chain, lamented.
"Jiaojiao has grown quite a bit recently. Sister-in-law has ordered two sets of clothes for you. You can try them on when they arrive tomorrow."
"Thank you, Sister-in-law... Sister-in-law, have I been behaving well lately?"
"Yes, you have." Suizi was always satisfied with her younger sister-in-law.
Although she was a bit mischievous, she was sensible and didn’t give Suizi any stress in regards to her academics which was a stark contrast to her thoughtless older brother.
Last night, Yu Jingting carried Suizi up the stairs as a prank and was subsequently kicked out to sleep in the study. Suizi was still mad at him for that.
"So can I, as a good and sickly girl, get two ice creams?" Jiaojiao held up two fingers, smirking, "I learned a remedy recently, supposedly eating ice cream can cure diarrhea."
"Whoever gave you that idea deserves a beating." Suizi laughed inspite of herself, "If your stomach feels uncomfortable, eating ice cream will only make it worse. We’ll discuss this after you’ve recovered."
"Oh..." Jiaojiao decided to beat Xiaopang up once she returned. It was him who had given her the idea!
"Your brother has bought canned food for you."
"Eh?!" Jiaojiao instantly perked up and reached into Yu Jingting’s pocket. His factory uniform had sizeable pockets.
"If you keep moving around, I’ll dump you in the toilet!" Yu Jingting threatened, but to no avail.
When Jiaojiao found the canned food, she couldn’t help grinning from ear to ear, feeling that getting sick this time was totally worthwhile.
Suizi thought the girls in her family were quite blessed. Yu Jingting and his father spoke in thunderous voices but were gentle to the girls at home, which was a common trait among men from the north.
Upon arriving at the clinic, Jiaojiao suddenly clutched her stomach as she couldn’t stand up straight from the pain, causing her sister and brother-in-law to panic. The doctor immediately shifted her onto the examination bed, looking serious.
"How long has she been like this?"
"It started this morning, after she ate lamb skewers yesterday." Suizi was anxious, "Doctor, could this be appendicitis?"
How could simple indigestion cause such agony?
The doctor was also worried that it was appendicitis. He pressed on Jiaojiao’s stomach, causing her to scream out loud.
"I need to go to the toilet!"
Suizi and Yu Jingting waited anxiously by the toilet while Jiaojiao had yet to come out. They were worried sick.
"What if she has fainted inside?"
"Wait a bit, if she doesn’t come out soon, you should go in and check." Yu Jingting’s brow furrowed with concern for his sister.
As the couple anxiously waited, an alarmed scream came from the ladies’ room.
"Ah!"
Yu Jingting instinctually rushed inside but was swiftly yanked back by Suizi.
"It doesn’t sound like Jiaojiao."
The scream sounded like it came from a woman in her twenties, not a child.
"Old Shen, something’s wrong, hurry up, ah!" There was a woman’s cry accompanied by a piercing scream from inside.
A middle-aged man suddenly bolted out of the men’s room and headed into the women’s toilets despite the many pairs of eyes watching.
In a panic, Suizi rushed in after him.
Unlike the modern toilets of later generations, these lavatories did not have partitions.
Jiaojiao was still a young girl, and it was inappropriate for such a big man to barge into the women’s toilet.
Soon, a cacophony of cries, curses, and howls filled the toilet.
Suizi ran in just in time to meet Jiaojiao, who was luckily done just as the man went in.
"Sister-in-law, there’s a pervert in there!!!" Seeing an adult man barging into the women’s toilet scared Jiaojiao straight into Suizi’s arms.
"What the hell are you doing? Get out!" The fierce women yelled.
The man ignored the threats around him, walking over to the sobbing woman inside.
"Xiaochang, what’s wrong?"
"Our baby fell out, it’s a boy, he was fully formed...how could this..." The woman presented the contents of her hand to the man.
The room was filled with gasps. Suizi quickly guided Jiaojiao out, making sure to cover her eyes.
"Wait, I want to see—" Jiaojiao had yet to see what was in the woman’s hand, which was a bloody mess.
"You really shouldn’t look."
When Suizi walked out of the toilet and saw Yu Jingting, his face was completely pallid.
She recognized the couple inside.
The man was Shen Liangyin’s biological father, and the woman was Chang Ling, Shen Liangyin’s former secretary and his father’s mistress. After Shen Liangyin was demoted, his father had reassigned Chang Ling to be by his side.
Suizi could guess why Chang Ling had miscarried. There was a high probability that it was Shen Liangyin’s mother’s doing, but it could also just be Wang Mengmeng’s jealousy.
Suizi had long known that Chang Ling’s child would never be born, as she had hinted this to Shen Liangyin’s mother before.
However, seeing it with her own eyes was different, especially upon hearing that the baby was already fully formed, Suizi felt particularly oppressed.
Upon hearing the story, Yu Jingting understood why Suizi was upset and patted her on the shoulder.
"This has nothing to do with you, nor is it your fault. Even without you, Shen Liangyin and her mother wouldn’t let the child live."
"I know, but I just felt...—"
A suffocating sense of oppression came rushing towards her like a landslide, and Suizi couldn’t articulate why she was feeling uneasy.
"Jiaojiao, are you feeling better?" Suizi asked. She always put her family first, which made Yu Jingting all the more worried for her.
"Much better. I felt so relieved after I ’let it all out’, and it’s no longer paining — sister-in-law, I still want to go in and see." After Jiaojiao had finished her business, she felt revitalized and didn’t need her brother to carry her anymore.
Seeing his sister was alright, Yu Jingting gave Jiaojiao a look, to which she responded by shuffling over to Suizi’s side.
