I am chasing a rough man in the 80s -
Chapter 53: No Room for Retreat
Chapter 53: Chapter 53: No Room for Retreat
Li Youcai was left speechless by Yu Jingting’s retort. He had mustered up all his strength to speak up before being shut down by a mere stray comment from the others.
Li Youcai’s mother had rushed over after hearing about the incident. Seeing the scene, she fell to the ground, covering her face as she cried.
"Why is my life so miserable!"
"Stop crying. Your son has caused all this trouble, and yet the girl’s family is still willing to marry him off to you. Isn’t that a good thing?" the village chief tried to console her.
"My son is supposed to marry a high-born lady, does she even match? Hasn’t she ever looked at herself in the mirror?"
Li Youcai’s mother’s words drew the dissatisfaction of Wang Fenfang.
Wang Fenfang stepped up, pointing at Li Youcai’s mother and countered:
"My maiden wouldn’t even gaze upon a man from your family who has a tradition of living off of women. Your husband married into your family, your father-in-law married into your family. Does your son also want to marry into the family? Fine, let Li Youcai marry into my family and become a son-in-law!"
Suizi watched this, looking back and forth between the two.
Feeling somewhat disappointed.
Fights between these kind of shrewish women were merely about who could scream louder and hurl dirtier insults. They were not at all interesting to watch, unlike Yu Jingting’s witty retorts.
She had seen many arguments, and anywhere Yu Jingting was, laughter was never absent - Yu Jingting was simply of a higher class...
While Suizi was silently praising Yu Jingting in her heart, Li Youcai exploded.
He jumped up, pointing at Suizi and cursed:
"Wang Cuihua, you old witch, what sort of demon did you give birth to?"
Suizi touched her own nose.
Me? Do I look like an old woman?
Li Youcai, having forgotten his glasses, couldn’t see clearly, and with the poor visibility at night, he could barely make out a figure next to Yu Jingting, thus mistaking her for Wang Cuihua.
"It’s you! You think I won’t recognize you just because you’re dressed like a bear?!" Li Youcai blurted out with an unprecedented courage.
In his heart, he held a grudge against Yu Jingting for "stealing his wife".
Although Suizi had never liked him in any lifetime, Li Youcai firmly believed that, as a person who was reborn and had regretted his past, he sincerely wanted to woo Suizi, so why wouldn’t she accept him?
Little did he realize, his act of blaming Suizi had strayed so far from his attempt to woo her.
Yu Jingting just sat by, treating it all like a farce.
When he heard him blaming Suizi, his face changed.
He grabbed Li Youcai by the collar and dragged him in front of Suizi. The light from his flashlight shone on Suizi’s delicate face.
She was a beauty indeed, even if she was wearing a homely fur hat.
"Open your dog eyes and see clearly, who is this?"
Finally, Li Youcai saw her.
"Suizi? How can it be you?!"
Who could have thought that Suizi, a young girl, was dressed like a bear, but anyone could recognize her anywhere!
"What biscuit do you think you are, calling me an old witch? Look in the mirror. The wrinkles in your face could trap a fly! I don’t acknowledge you as my son!"
Suizi finished in one breath.
Li Youcai’s eyes rolled back into his head, and he fainted with despair.
Yu Jingting let go, watching him drop to the ground like a rotten potato, tut-tutting in dismay.
"I’ve never seen anyone so eager to get himself killed — good job today, wife," He added.
You really haven’t thought it over for a long time, you just retorted directly. You’ve improved a lot.
Suizi felt incredibly relieved and refreshed after the backlash.
Li Youcai’s mother was still arguing with Liu Lamei. She saw Suizi make her son faint — or maybe it was scare him into fainting, and she ran over, pointing at Suizi in anger:
"You’re a menace, you’ve ruined my son—"
"Ugly people should speak less!"
Yu Jingting extended a finger towards her and simultaneously pulled Suizi back two steps, his face full of distaste as he looked at Mrs. Li.
"Suizi, stay away from this kind of person whose brain is messed up. Mom said, she doesn’t want us playing with fools."
"Yeah!" Suizi obediently nodded her head.
Mrs. Li dared to sass Suizi, but she dared not offend Yu Jingting. Seeing Wang Cuihua approaching from the corner of her eye, she tactically retreated.
The whole village knew that the Yu family couldn’t be offended, and her focus right now wasn’t on them.
"Did I come late?" Wang Cuihua led the sleep-eyed Jiaojiao over.
"Perfect timing, we’re currently witnessing Mrs. Li and Wang Fenfang being mutually disdainful..." Suizi briefed her mother-in-law on the previous events, and the two ladies stood side by side, eating sunflower seeds whilst watching the drama unfold.
Bored, Jiaojiao used the fallen Li Youcai as a horse, hopping over him back and forth, and murmuring a nursery rhyme:
"Little rubber ball, kicking over the little rubber ball stand, the Malan flower blooms twenty-one."
While she was murmuring the rhyme, the two families were arguing. Funny thing, the rhythm of Mrs. Li and Wang Fenfang’s argument matched Jiaojiao’s nursery rhyme exactly.
"My son is a technical school student!" Mrs. Li placed her hands on her hips.
"My maiden is pretty!" Wang Fenfang crossed her arms.
"Two eight two five six~" Jiaojiao hopped.
"So many girls like my son!"
"The number of people proposing to my daughter has worn down our doorstep!"
"Two eight two nine thirty-one~"
Seeing the two women bickering till Jiaojiao finished singing her nursery rhyme, the village chief couldn’t bear it any longer and roared:
"Shut up!"
The two shrews looked at him.
Suizi and the gossipy spectators also paused in their sunflower seed cracking.
In just a little while, many villagers had crowded around, forming a circle to watch the spectacle. Suizi handed out sunflower seeds to those who had a good relationship with her family.
Everyone around was having fun, except for the two quarrelling families in the ring.
"I don’t care how capable your son is, or how... whatnot your maiden is." The village chief thought of Lun Lamei, who was like a piece of rotten meat, and didn’t know how to describe her, so he replaced it with ’whatnot’.
"If your two families don’t get married, then I’ll bind you both and see the official, dealt with like vagrants, go squat in the fence!"
After the village chief finished roaring, both families fell silent.
"Have you all considered it? Private settlement arrangement of marriage, I’ll write an introduction letter now, registering it tomorrow, and no one will bring up this matter later - the young couple will go back and live a good life ---- if you disagree, I will prepare the cart now, sending both your families into the jurisdiction!"
As a relatively influential person in the village, once the village chief said this, there was basically no room for negotiation.
Mrs. Li knew the situation was dire and reluctantly said:
"Fine, so be it. My family will put up with it. We will go ahead with the marriage but mind you, we will not pay a single cent for the dowry."
Li Youcai, who was on the verge of regaining consciousness, heard his mother say this, struggling to rise, but Jiaojiao was still hopping around. He stirred, and Jiaojiao stepped on his stomach.
Li Youcai rolled his eyes and fainted again.
Yu Jingting quickly lifted his little sister high into the air.
"What are you stepping on? Isn’t that dirty?"
Jiaojiao grinned, her feet slipping~
The marriage had to be agreed upon whether they liked it or not, both parents were dissatisfied, but dissatisfaction was of no use.
Having seen enough of the drama, Suizi suddenly thought, had she missed something?
Right, her so-called loving father of Wang Fenfang, why hadn’t he said a word?
She noticed Chen Kaide in an inconspicuous corner, squatting and smoking a cigarette.
"What’s all this uproar about, don’t let people laugh at us." Chen Kaide had held it in for quite some time, seeing that the situation has settled, he finally stood up and said.
