Chapter 514: Chapter 514: That Certain Someone Can’t Keep Calm
Mother Shen got the answer she wanted from Suizi and left contentedly.
Just before leaving, she suddenly halted.
"I’m curious, how did your mother educate you?"
Suizi is even younger than her daughter, Shen Liangyin, yet she shows much more competence in handling matters.
Shen Liangyin, raised by the grandfather of the Shen Family, has been studying military tactics since childhood, she is indeed an impressive child.
Mother Shen couldn’t help being curious, wondering about the childhood of this girl who was even more brilliant than her own daughter.
"My mother is an extraordinary woman herself. Maybe I’ve spent my entire life trying to surpass her. The influence she has on me is profound. I might not quite understand everything she said when I was little, but with experience, I gradually get it."
To be precise, she spent two lifetimes working on how to surpass her mother.
"We often say that children are too young to comprehend many things we tell them. However, those childhood memories are deeply ingrained in the subconscious mind. They can unexpectedly resurface when one grows up. At least, that’s the case for me."
Mother Shen seemed dejected, but Suizi guessed that she must have failed to understand her point.
A weak, failing mother, a ruthless grandfather, and a patriarchal father; all their actions and their attitudes have shaped Shen Liangyin, causing her to resort to any means necessary in her actions and to ignore morality in her dealings.
She made it her heart’s mission to outperform men. Yet deep down, she has accepted her parents’ view — that women are inferior to men. This led her to a fatal mistake in her judgment regarding the Yu Family’s preference for sons over daughters.
"You failed to give her a loving family nor did you let her truly experience gender equality. As a result, she just doesn’t believe in these ideas. If possible, please relay a message to her for me. She didn’t lose to me this time; she lost to her sad childhood."
Mother Shen left the house and was surprised to see two men at the door.
Yu Jingting waved the nearly burnt-out cigarette in his hand.
"We just arrived."
No one with a bit of brains would believe such a ghost story, but Mother Shen did.
Suizi watched Mother Shen hurry away. People indeed prefer to believe in their own imagined truths. How fitting.
"Mr. Meng Wen, when did you arrive?" Suizi asked knowingly.
"Just call me Xiao Meng." Meng Jun mentally added, ’I’ve been standing here since you said "your father died so tragically"!’
"You need something?"
"Stop addressing me so formally, it’s cutting short my lifespan," Meng Jun joked, pulling out an envelope from his pocket, "We had a lottery at our office. Our boss won two bicycles. He has no chance to ride them, so he asked me to deliver them to you."
"Wow, so you can even redeem prizes in other provinces? And amazingly two bicycles? Your company’s benefits sure are nationwide."
Yu Jingting bluntly debunked Meng Jun’s obviously fabricated story.
Meng Jun was able to maintain his smile even after being publicly exposed.
"Whatever our chief told me to do, I did. Next time, when you two have free time, head over to the Department Store to pick up your bicycles. It’s inconvenient to go out without a form of transportation."
A bicycle at this time wasn’t the same concept as in later generations. An average person wouldn’t be able to afford it even after saving half a year’s salary.
Even for a newly middle-class family like Suizi’s, a bicycle was still a big expense.
"Always accepting his gifts doesn’t feel right." Suizi cleverly used the word ’always’.
"Next time he comes on business, tell him to visit our home. I’ll treat him to a drink," Yu Jingting chimed in.
Suizi looked at him in surprise; Meng Jun also stared at Yu Jingting with the same surprised look.
Logically, both sides would continue to test conversation for a few rounds, and neither would reveal their cards first.
Yu Jingting’s decision to reveal his cards from the get-go not only confused Meng Jun but also made Suizi feel dizzy.
Yu Jingting winked at her, and Suizi had no choice but to silently approve his premature move.
"Ah—Then I’ll go back and pass on your message to our chief." Meng Jun immediately took the opportunity to exit the conversation, though he was also confused. Grabbing this chance to report to his boss couldn’t go wrong.
Meng Jun thought this would be a significant turning point in the relationship between the boss and Suizi’s couple. As the messenger, he shouldn’t miss this opportunity.
This could determine whether he could get promoted and receive a raise!
"Hey, is that—?" Meng Jun, sharp-eyed, noticed the rare book on Suizi’s table.
"Ah, I forgot to mention that." Suizi facepalmed.
She had planned to propound the idea of buying books to Mother Shen but forgot amidst her act of playing the villain.
"You’re also into collecting these?" Meng Jun found it miraculous.
"There’s someone else who shares my daughter-in-law’s hobby?"
"It’s our boss. He has a whole study room full of ancient books. He enjoys rummaging through the old markets in his spare time, treating it like his infatuation."
"Uh—"
"The last time Director Chen threw away a few of his books, our boss was so mad he skipped dinner. This being Director Chen, if it were us... " Meng Jun shook his head. Only Chen Lijun would dare to poke the tiger like that.
Meng Jun had never seen the boss turn red-faced from fury, he didn’t dare to vent by yelling either.
"What books did she throw?" Suizi was only interested in this.
After hearing some of the book titles that Meng Jun mentioned, Suizi’s vision grew dark and Yu Jingting quickly caught her.
"Oh my God, those books! How could she throw them? My heart aches so much!" Suizi clutched her chest, gasping for breath.
"They weren’t yours, so what if she threw them?" Yu Jingting, who was indifferent to books, couldn’t understand Suizi’s anguish.
"What do you know?! Those are one of a kind! They no longer belong to anyone’s individual wealth. They’re treasures of the entire human race. And she just tossed them like that? Didn’t anyone bother to look for them?" Suizi asked.
"How could we not look for them? Our entire department spent an afternoon searching for them. Our boss almost personally sifted through the trash. We couldn’t find even half a sheet of paper. By the way, you’re really quite like our boss. He also said that those are treasures of the entire human race. He said if he can’t find anyone to pass them on to he would donate them to the nation—hey, Director Xiaochen, what’s the matter?"
Suizi’s expression became very strange.
She and that someone, they’re incredibly similar, aren’t they? She had the same idea about donating to the nation half an hour ago.
"Are you really planning to share drinks with that whomsoever?" After Meng Jun left, Suizi asked.
"Don’t you find it strange? That ’whomsoever’ originally sent covert gifts but now does so openly; mother surely did something to him to make him so impatient."
Although Yu Jingting didn’t know what happened in Beijing, it is clear that the situation had changed. It made no sense to continue playing the same old word games as before.
It’s better to lay everything out one at a time, speak openly about anything.
"I have to say, I admire our mother quite a bit. She managed to turn a high-ranking, calm person like him into someone who can’t keep his cool. Fortunately, you don’t take after her."
Yu Jingting felt relieved, if his charming little Pig Spirit was like her mother-in-law, undisciplined and out of control, it would be troublesome.
