Chapter 482: Chapter 482: Catching the Thief in a Closed Door
The volleyball match went as Suizi had predicted. It made its way through to the finals.
Aside from Zhang Yue’e’s mother-in-law, who didn’t want the women’s team to win, the entire nation was looking forward to the girls claiming victory and using this championship to herald the rise of a great nation.
The match was held at night. To describe the situation as entire streets being empty would not be an exaggeration.
The children stopped doing their homework, and the adults stopped knitting sweaters.
Those who had televisions were watching the match, and those who didn’t listened to it on the radio.
They were all waiting to witness history.
The beer factory was no exception.
The factory initially operated on two shifts.
But out of a humanistic consideration, the production was temporarily halted for two hours during the match. Factory Director Yu Jingting brought his own television so that everyone could gather and watch the match together.
This action was undeniably compassionate.
The factory workers privately speculated that this was a measure taken by the Factory Director to salvage his reputation, which had plummeted after his domestic violence incident.
The rumours about Yu Jingting’s domestic violence were escalating, and as he failed to come forward to clarify them, the rumours took flight, becoming increasingly ludicrous.
These tales irritated Wang Cuihua, leading her to develop large blisters in her mouth. As both Suizi and Yu Jingting prevented her from coming out to clarify, she remained at home, isolating herself from visitors and eating sunflower seeds, which exacerbated her condition.
On the night of the final, the factory’s cafeteria was buzzing with noise, everyone was engrossed in watching the match.
"Great shot!" someone shouted.
Others turned their heads towards the voice only to see the gatekeeper, which prompted one of them to ask.
"Old Liu, if you’re here watching the match, who is guarding the gate?"
"No need to guard, gate for what? Everyone’s at home watching the match. Who else could possibly come at this hour?" The gatekeeper replied nonchalantly.
No one wanted to miss the match today.
The one who asked was about to continue his interrogation, but with the cheering crowd, his attention was drawn back to the television.
Meanwhile, as all the night shift workers in the factory were engrossed in the match, a dark figure approached the office building.
The office building was dark, its lights off and the main door locked.
No one was left in the night shift office, so the office building was locked. The man pulled out a key, quickly glancing around to ensure no one was in sight, then unlocked the door and slipped inside.
He ascended the stairs quickly in the dark, guided by the moonlight filtering through the glass.
In the empty building, his footsteps were exceptionally loud.
The man made his way to the third floor, and headed straight for the Factory Director’s office.
Yu Jingting’s office door was locked, but the man had already prepared a spare key. He inserted the key, and quickly, the door opened.
A beautifully framed calligraphy hung on the wall of the office. The elegant and lasting inscription conveyed an undertone of sharpness. It read: "Behaving with the end in mind from the beginning, there would be no failure."
The signature was penned by Chen Hansui.
The man examined the calligraphy for a while, unable to comprehend how a grassroot man like Yu Jingting, who had never received a formal education, could possess so many managerial skills. Even the calligraphy hanging on his wall far outstripped the previous Factory Director in terms of taste.
Adding it all up, Yu Jingting was a few years younger than him. Yet this unschooled, young man had already occupied the Factory Director’s seat, while he was still a quality inspector.
The moonlight filtered through the window, casting monstrous shadows onto Wa Gang’s face. He was consumed by jealous rage.
A room like this, wouldn’t it be nice if it belonged to him?
Wa Gang had always believed that being outperformed by a rural migrant was a disgrace, given his superior academic credentials.
He considered Yu Jingting to simply be luckier than him. Now, an opportunity was at his fingertips. As long as he held on to this, he could anticipate a promising future as well.
With this in mind, Wa Gang stopped hesitating.
He took out a small flashlight and quickly approached the desk.
The only things on Yu Jingting’s desk were a telephone and a picture frame.
The picture in the frame was that of Suizi with their children. He could see his beloved wife and children every day while sitting at his desk.
Upon seeing Suizi in the frame, Wa Gang’s heart tightened.
For some reason, he always felt that the Factory Director’s wife was not simple.
At the last basketball game, she was sitting in the stands, occasionally glancing in his direction. Her eyes, like they could see through everything, made Wa Gang uneasy.
He hastily steadied his nerves, cautioning himself not to panic.
If she really had discovered something, she would have taken action.long ago, so why wait until now?
Moreover, that woman was currently troubled by his mother’s rumors, and had a strained relationship with her in-laws these days. She probably didn’t have time to deal with his affairs.
Wa Gang dismissed his apprehension of Suizi and started to pull at Yu Jingting’s drawers.
The drawer of Yu Jingting was locked. It was of the old-fashioned style, and with a slight pry using a wire by Wa Gang, it opened.
The drawer was filled with several brown paper bags.
If these bags were stored in the Factory Director’s office, they must contain important documents.
Wa Gang picked up the bag on top, opened it, only to find it filled with loose draft paper. The first page brazenly read: "My darling wife is so gorgeous."
Wa Gang: ???
The second page read: "Even more beautiful the more I look"
The third page: "I want to do ..."
Wa Gang’s face turned beet red.
What was this?
These were not serious documents at all, just random scribbles by someone bored.
Wa Gang put down the bag, picked up the next brown paper bag underneath, and continued searching piecemeal.
Finally, in the bag at the bottom, he found what he was looking for.
Opening up the brown paper bag, it was filled with several recipes.
"Crispy ice cream recipe, fruit ice cream recipe..."
Wa Gang was overjoyed. He carefully put the documents away, and was about to leave when, upon lifting his head, he was shocked.
Two figures had appeared at the door without him noticing.
A man and a woman, neither of them short. The man was hugging the woman and she was half-heartedly pushing him away.
Seeing that Wa Gang had finally noticed them, Suizi reached out and switched on the light.
"Such a fine night, aren’t you at home watching the match?" Yu Jingting had one arm around Suizi while he waved at Wa Gang with the other hand.
"You, you—?"
Wa Gang was so terrified that the bag in his hand fell to the floor with a thud. He stood there, completely exposed.
"Are you disappointed? We didn’t turn out to be the fools you hoped we’d be, blindly following your plans," Yu Jingting waved his arm and a group of people walked out from behind him.
Among them were the Wang Cuihua couple, Wang Hui, and even the young boy and Jiaojiao.
"Take a good look, this is what bad people look like. Do they look any different from ordinary people when they walk down the street? They don’t have extra noses or eyes, but damn, their hearts are corrupt!"
Yu Jingting pointed at Wa Gang, using him as a teaching moment for the children.
The current textbooks and TV dramas always portray villains so noticeably, as if they could be recognized at a glance, when in reality, they usually look just as ordinary as anyone else.
"I was wrong, Director, I was wrong. Please forgive me," Wa Gang knelt down and wept, "I was forced."
"Do you know that if you’d taken that, the factory wouldn’t have been able to operate? Everyone in the factory would have had to starve?" Yu Jingting asked.
Wa Gang, his face in his hands, just wept and didn’t reply.
"True, talking about this with you, someone with no conscience, it’s like preaching to the deaf. You only think of your own glory and wealth, disregarding the life or death of others. So, tell us, who sent you?"
Although the couple Yu Jingting and Suizi already knew who was behind him, they still wanted to hear him utter the name of the person behind this.
