I am chasing a rough man in the 80s -
Chapter 449: Goodbye, My Friend
Chapter 449: Chapter 449: Goodbye, My Friend
Normally, rural homes keep dogs and geese, so when a stranger arrives, you can usually hear them from the courtyard gate.
But the old Yu family home was an exception, they didn’t often reside there, so they didn’t keep any poultry.
Suizi was so absorbed in admiring the muscle-bound man doing embroidery, she didn’t even notice the window, and so, Shen Liangyin came in unnoticed.
This image dealt a heavy blow to Shen Liangyin.
A hunky man of six feet tall was usually an imposing sight anywhere, but the delicate needle in his hand seemed absurdly out of place.
Unforeseen intrusions were furthest from Suizi’s mind. So, without thinking, she snatched the needle away, mumbling something incomprehensible.
"Thank you for helping me thread the needle. I’m really clumsy and I can’t do anything right."
In a second, she switched into a dutiful housewife mode, and Yu Jingting raised an eyebrow in surprise.
"Thread the needle, my ass. I was the one stitching, I just wanted to help my wife sew."
Those words hit the two women differently.
Suizi felt great joy when she heard it, while Shen Liangyin was not in the best of spirits.
"Director Yu, I hope I’m not interrupting anything. I saw your courtyard gate was open, so I let myself in."
"A gust of wind blew Director Shen this way? Find a seat yourself, this rural home is rather modest, we hope you don’t mind."
Yu Jingting took the needle in Suizi’s hand and continued to sew ostentatiously, right in front of Shen Liangyin.
This undeniably sent different signals to the two women.
He blatantly disregarded Shen Liangyin’s importance, indicating that he could be himself and didn’t need to put on a front.
Shen Liangyin surveyed the room. She’d never visited the countryside before, she had merely heard from folks at the factory that rural folks were unhygienic, with piles of animal droppings dotting their courtyards. You could step in one and then walk right into the house.
So, prior to the visit, the clean-freak Shen Liangyin had prepared herself mentally for the encounter.
But upon arriving at the old Yu family house, the reality was entirely different from what she had imagined.
Not only was the old Yu family house clean, but every courtyard she glimpsed on her way here was neat and tidy as well.
There were some shabby houses, but the clean ones were also numerous.
The inside of the old Yu family’s house was even tidier. Even though there wasn’t much furniture, everything was sparkling clean.
The faded "Double Happiness" character still hung on the wall, it was put up when Yu Jingting got married and he was reluctant to take it down.
Shen Liangyin’s gaze lingered on the "Double Happiness" character for a while before she finally spoke:
"Director Yu, I come here today on behalf of my father to apologize to you. He can be a bit impetuous when dealing with matters, eager to implement rules and regulations. I hope you won’t take it to heart."
Suizi looked down, holding back a big ’ha’ in her heart.
Shen Liangyin didn’t act her age. She was supposedly apologizing, yet she shifted the blame conveniently to the rules, suggesting her unreasonable father was just working by the book.
"Why should I hold a grudge about such a trivial matter? I’m quite comfortable out here in the countryside, embroidering with my wife, roasting sweet potatoes... much more relaxed than in the city. Just tell your father, if he wants to apologize, he should come himself, not send a woman, he’s such a ..."
He almost said "coward," but Suizi pulled him back in time.
"It must have been tough on Director Shen to come all this way. We appreciate the gesture. However, my husband has not been feeling well lately, so he’s not considering returning at the moment."
"I understand Director Yu’s concerns. I run a business too, and I know how constraints can hinder progress. This is our sincerity."
Shen Liangyin took out a Kraft paper bag from her pocket which contained several sheets of paper.
"Director Yu, please consider it, I look forward to your good news."
Yu Jingting frowned slightly, and Shen Liangyin laughed.
"There’s no need to rush rejection, just give me a response by Monday."
Then she took out an exquisite small box from her pocket and gently pressed it on the Kraft paper bag.
"I know it was presumptuous of me to visit without notice, I hope Director Chen doesn’t mind. This is something I bought on my business trip, I thought it suited you."
Suizi’s eyes darkened, while her mouth uttered polite words. She was neither humble nor overbearing, flawless in every way. However, it was hard to detect any enthusiasm, and even harder to guess her current emotions.
Having achieved her goal, Shen Liangyin got up and left, with Suizi personally seeing her off to the gate.
"Director Chen," Shen Liangyin said with a smile, "Director Yu and I are just ordinary friends, you don’t misunderstand, do you?"
"Not at all, my husband is a sociable person and likes to make friends. His charisma only proves the wisdom of my choice as his wife."
Suizi gave her a sarcastic reply.
"Director Yu would be overjoyed to hear you say that, wouldn’t he? The last time we spoke, he joked about how you initially weren’t willing to marry him. It seems Director Yu doesn’t consider me a friend since he didn’t tell me the truth."
Shen Liangyin attentively observed Suizi’s reaction; she had deliberately planned and refined her words.
Her seemingly simple words carried a significant amount of information.
Before coming, Shen Liangyin had gathered information about Suizi from multiple sources, from her school grades to the details of her marriage to Yu Jingting. Everything was carefully inquired.
According to the information she gathered, Chen Hansui was a very high IQ and low-key person. Such a person must be thoughtful and wouldn’t miss her hidden intentions.
In circumlocution, what Shen Liangyin was trying to express was that she was close to Yu Jingting, and he was willing to confide in her, including personal matters.
Shen Liangyin hoped to see a hint of anger in Suizi’s eyes but found none.
Suizi burst out laughing, not in sarcasm or derision, but out of genuine amusement.
"What are you laughing about?" Shen Liangyin was perplexed by Suizi’s reaction which was beyond her control.
"I’m laughing because you’re so lovely, ever so lovely."
Filled with affection, Suizi patted her shoulder.
"You’ve got pretty good sources, but next time, you should save your money, they lied to you."
Shen Liangyin’s pupils contracted.
This was the first time she showed drastic emotional fluctuations in front of Suizi.
"If you want to know something next time, just ask me directly. Don’t go snooping around anymore, they’ve been feeding you false information."
"I don’t understand what you’re saying." Shen Liangyin started to panic. She didn’t understand where she went wrong.
She had questioned several villagers from Yang Village and received the same information; Suizi was initially unwilling to move here. She was weeping and acting like she was at death’s door. If it weren’t for the old Yu family paying a dowry of 200 yuan, the marriage would have surely fallen through.
"You don’t need to understand. You can ask my husband to explain it to you some other day. I think he’ll be very willing — after all, you’re ’friends’, right? As Peigen said, if you share your joy with a friend, you will have two joys. We are willing to share our joy."
Just not sure whether this so-called ’friend’ would be able to laugh about it?
