I am chasing a rough man in the 80s
Chapter 356: Missing out is gone forever

Chapter 356: Chapter 356: Missing out is gone forever

The Principal called Suizi into his office. After trading pleasantries and asking about the children, he tried to make small talk.

Last time, Fan Gao had leveraged the Principal to deliver fake documents. Thankfully, Suizi hadn’t made a fuss about it, allowing the Principal to hold onto his position.

With all the negative news, his early retirement was a done deal. But because of Suizi, he had salvaged some dignity. It was only natural, then, for him to show excessive enthusiasm and even flatter her.

After some idle chatter, the Principal opened a drawer and took out an envelope.

"We didn’t buy anything for your baby when you gave birth; take this as us buying some clothes for them."

It was commonplace to exchange gifts among colleagues. The envelope Suizi received wasn’t thick, so after a few polite refusals, she accepted it.

At home, she kept a ledger that recorded who gave what—be it eggs or brown sugar—when she had her child, so she could reciprocate those gifts when they had their life events or birthdays.

Seeing she had accepted the first envelope, the Principal took out another from his drawer.

"This one... is a reward from the school."

Upon feeling the envelope, Suizi sensed that it wasn’t money. She opened it to reveal a coupon from Furniture City.

The amount was neither excessive nor insufficient— just enough to furnish all of the rooms in their home.

"Why are you rewarding me?"

"Oh, you’re too modest, Suizi. You and Yuyu did such a great thing, which was even reported in the newspapers. Why did you remain anonymous?"

It seemed the Principal had anticipated Suizi’s question and swiftly brought out a newspaper from his drawer.

The news was from a few days prior. The front-page headline was about a brewery worker in their town who had discovered evidence of a crime from Yueben Country at their home and handed it over to the museum.

The news agency drafted the report. Suizi had specifically blurred her identity alongside Yu Jingting’s in it. It merely mentioned brewery workers and not her specifically.

"How did you know it was us?"

"Well, it’s a funny coincidence. I know the Director of the museum, who mentioned you. You’ve made a significant contribution to our hometown. I brought up your deeds to our superiors who were impressed with your exemplary character, knowing that you’re moving homes, they specifically approved this reward for you!"

Everything the principal said flowed too smoothly as if rehearsed multiple times.

Even his smile looked practiced repetitively in front of a mirror.

Suizi squinted her eyes and smiled at the amount of the token.

Ordinarily, receiving such a large reward would prompt one to express overt gratitude to the organization, but she said nothing.

Her silence left the principal feeling unsettled.

He was afraid that she would pick up some inconsistencies.

Luckily, Suizi just viewed the token for a while without asking any further questions. Without even saying thank you, she tucked it into her pocket and left.

Only after she left did the principal wipe the nervous sweat from his forehead and muttered to himself:

"Suizi has become even more beautiful after giving birth. But why does she seem more formidable? She scared me. I thought she might have figured something out..."

Suizi’s mocking smile continued until she left the Principal’s office.

If she believed the nonsense the Principal spouted, then she’d be a fool.

Even if the senior officials wanted to reward her and Yu Jingting for turning in the list, they’d top off the reward at a hundred and eight.

The last time she met with the Education Bureau official, they mentioned the tightness of their budget.

At this time, when the nation was vigorously promoting widespread education, the Department of Education would be thrilled to split a penny in half to spend. All the budget went towards educational resources, and there wasn’t any extra money to buy furniture for her new five-room house.

Someone else must be behind the furniture gift.

After getting off work, Suizi immediately contacted Wang Hui to help her figure out who was responsible for the token.

As a supervisor at the Department Store, Wang Hui was part of the system. Checking should have been easy, but unfortunately, she couldn’t find anything.

"Suizi, this is too weird. Apparently, they bypassed us and went straight to the boss."

Wang Hui was baffled.

Suizi was standing next to Yu Jingting in front of their bed. The couple was changing diapers in unison, one for the maiden, the other for the boy.

Suizi paused upon hearing Wang Hui’s words.

She wasn’t surprised by the result. It would be abnormal if Wang Hui had found something. It was normal that she hadn’t.

"It must be someone harboring guilt." Yu Jingting snorted, as he had already guessed who it was.

Besides the mysterious person who sent Suizi the big yellow fish, who else could be so generous?

"I’m truly curious about who has such capabilities." Wang Hui joked, "You two have picked up a major backer. Don’t forget me when you make it big."

Having just finished diapering their son, whose eyelids were already drooping and didn’t require much effort to get him to sleep, Suizi looked at her baby boy.

In contrast to their easygoing son, Yu Jingting was dealing with the difficulty of handling Luoluo, who pooped again after having her diaper changed. He busily fetched water to clean their maiden while complaining. Luoluo saw her father’s busy state and laughed.

"Your daughter already knows how to laugh?" Wang Hui’s own daughter only learned to laugh around three months old.

"They started as early as two months."

The twins in Suizi’s home learned to laugh early.

Whenever Yu Jingting was free, he would fuss over the children. The rest of the family would also regularly chat with the two little ones, creating an environment that promoted rapid language development.

If they grew up to be talkative, Suizi wouldn’t have found it surprising since their family’s genes naturally predisposed them to be sociable.

"I never realized Jingting was great at taking care of children."

Once Yu Jingting had cleaned and swaddled Luoluo, the little maiden refused to stay still and sleep like her brother. Instead, she demanded to be held by her father, smiling when picked up and crying when put down.

Luckily for the energetic maiden, her father was fit for the task. Yu Jingting had an abundance of energy that could more than handle taking care of the baby.

For Wang Hui, seeing such a large and strong man being so patient with a tender baby was a striking sight.

"Raising a child is a two-way practice. Parents have to invest a substantial amount of energy and emotion to receive unconditional love from their child. Kids grow in a flash. In just a blink of an eye, years would have passed by. Once you’ve missed it, you’ve missed it forever."

Suizi spoke in a double entendre.

Yu Jingting, who had finally lulled the full-of-energy maiden to sleep, understood what she meant and followed up.

"Right, once you’ve missed it, no amount of money can buy it back. Even all the furniture tokens in the world... plus three large yellow fishes... wouldn’t be able to win back the heart of the tough woman of my home."

They accepted the gifts, but they hadn’t accepted any feelings. His wife’s heart was as hard as stone. It couldn’t be won over even with these grand gestures. He didn’t fit in with this crowd.

As Suizi looked at him, she realized that he was the one who understood her the most, the only one who could grasp her insinuation.

After sending off Wang Hui, Yu Jingting prepared a basin of hot water for a foot bath.

The water was scalding hot, and he cautiously dipped his toes into it in a delicate manner. The heat made him grimace in pain. He kept his feet on the basin’s edge and chatted with Suizi.

"So, the one who is desperately toadying us, is it Fan Huang or not? Mom said Fan Huang isn’t your father when she visited last time. But you ran into Fan Huang’s lackey, Meng Jun, a few days ago. Could these just be coincidences? Hey, what the hell are you doing?!!!"

Suizi’s sudden move startled Yu Jingting, and his foot that was resting on the edge of the basin slipped in, causing him to yelp from the scorching heat.
