Chapter 352: Chapter 352: The Entire Family Is In A Financial Crisis

The roof beams, they were filled with money.

Apparently, the landlord had left quite a lot behind, much of it silver.

If there had only been silver, they could have dealt with it easily. But then, Suizi found a little booklet.

When she opened it, she found it was filled with words from Yueben Country. After only reading a few pages, Suizi became angry.

It was a list.

It recorded the names of local able-bodied adults forced into labor by Yueben Country during the war, and who had died as a result.

The owner of this house, it seemed, had been in cahoots with Yueben, profiting from the suffering of his fellow countrymen.

This was strong evidence of history, and Suizi felt her blood curdle as she saw it.

Suddenly, she had a different thought.

Perhaps the descendants of the landlord did not come just for the money.

Maybe they were looking for this booklet.

This booklet, that recorded the tragic history that had befallen their compatriots in the northern lands.

"What’s it say?" Jingting, unable to read it, asked Suizi.

"We should teach our children to never forget history, to remember it, to be grateful to previous generations, and to strive for success."

"...???"

"Call the police, these things need to be handed over to the state."

Suizi thought that the booklet should go where it should rightfully be.

Like a museum, for instance.

Jingting and his wife became famous once again, this time because they handed over a box of silver coins to the authorities.

Upon discovering these items, they immediately alerted the authorities. There were treasures hidden in the beams of three rooms, some of them quite precious.

Suizi did not pocket a single cent.

Though she loved money, she wouldn’t touch a single cent of the money tied to history and the suffering of her compatriots.

The old lady from the Yu family and the others also thought Suizi had done well. The hatred for their country and family was ingrained in their DNA. In the face of justice, personal losses were insignificant.

What’s more, they didn’t suffer any losses at all. Apart from being rewarded with a banner, the government also made public their act.

Jiaojiao was thrilled.

After writing "My Good Brother" essays for a whole semester she could finally write about someone else: "My Righteous Sister-In-Law".

As their house was halfway through its renovation when they discovered all this, it became unfit to live in. To reward Jingting’s honesty, the factory assigned him two adjacent tile-roofed houses.

This suddenly increased their living space.

Jingting planned to demolish the courtyard, merge the two houses into one big courtyard, and knock down the walls between the two houses to make it a five-room house.

This would resolve the accommodation issue for the whole family.

Jiaojiao would finally have her own room and not have to share with Wang Cuihua.

When the two younger ones grow up, they would have rooms of their own as well.

However, this increased the renovation work. The previous courtyard work was done in vain; the labor and bricks put into it were wasted.

They needed to buy more bricks and wallpaper for the increased number of rooms. Now that they had more rooms, they needed more furniture as well. They certainly couldn’t move in with the rooms just being bare.

Suizi did some quick calculations and came to a conclusion.

If they wanted to get everything done in one go, they would need to put half of their hard-earned savings into it.

This would take a toll on them.

Selling pearls or gold would solve the problem.

But Suizi thought, these were the family’s savings for a rainy day, they certainly wouldn’t touch it unless it was absolutely necessary.

Times were tough.

Wang Cuihua, who knew how to manage a household, decided to economize and reduce their meat consumption from three times a week to once a week.

Once she suggested this, the whole family resisted.

Let alone the fact that Suizi needed to breastfeed and Jiaojiao was still growing, even Jingting who was a carnivore thought this was a bad idea.

With cost-cutting proving to be futile, they needed to find new sources of income.

At a family meeting that evening, Suizi was the first to put forth a solution, laying out a piece of paper on the table.

"Jingting, don’t rush to go start your new job. Take the money to the village and buy medicinal herbs. Buy as much of these particular herbs as you can."

"Once purchased, will they be sold? Should the money be used to buy wood for furniture?" Wang Cuihua asked.

"They can’t be sold immediately. At least not until next year."

Wang Cuihua was silent, pondering how unfeasible this seemed.

"So, not only will we not have the money to buy the wood, but our entire savings will also be tied up?! We might as well just eat meat once a week."

Suizi had previously taken a thousand out to buy jadeite raw stones for Jingting.

Although according to Suizi and Chen Lijun, Jingting was speculating on an increase, a sharp increase at that.

No one knew exactly how much the increase would be, especially since Suizi wouldn’t consider liquidating.

So, their household account was already short a thousand.

Now, they were going to hoard herbal medicine. The thought itself made Wang Cuihua hurt all over.

"Listen to Suizi, there’s a drought this year, the price of herbs will definitely go up next year, we need to play the long game."

Jingting knew that Suizi had dreams that foretold the future and trusted her completely.

"The price rise next year is just that, next year’s problem. What are we going to use to move this year? Our new house is so big, if we don’t get some furniture in there, our voices will echo!"

Wang Cuihua was concerned with the immediate problem.

"Suizi earns a salary, but Tiegen’s job is worthless. The factory is about to go bankrupt. I heard that they haven’t paid their workers in over half a year. Tiegen is likely working for free."

Suizi was earning close to fifty a month. The management had chosen to promote her and once she officially started her new position her salary was expected to rise even further.

Her salary might reach sixty or seventy. But even so, it would just be enough to cover food and other necessities for the family. There wouldn’t be much left to save.

Their farmland back home isn’t producing much either due to drought, so they can’t depend on it for income.

So, when Wang Cuihua heard Suizi wanted to hoard, her first reaction was to refuse.

"Mother, don’t worry, I have thought about how to make money in the short term. Remember all the eggs our neighbors gave us when I was observing the confinement period?"

Neighbors now customarily gave hens eggs when a woman was observing the confinement period post childbirth. Relatives from their hometown and neighbors in the city kept bringing eggs to the Yu family.

Suizi only ate two a day, as she felt she wouldn’t be able to digest if she ate more than that.

So, the remaining eggs were stored.

"Ah, you plan on selling eggs? That’s barely any money. But you did remind me, we should salt the remaining chicken eggs or they might go bad."

Wang Cuihua was determined not to waste anything else, as it would add salt to their already existing wound of economic hardship.

"Salted eggs have no market, as everybody knows how to make them. No one will buy them, and even we would get bored if we ate them ourselves, so I plan on——"

Suizi took out another piece of paper with a strange mould drawn on it.

Jingting was amused by the quick-witted woman, who had made preparations in advance.

"What’s this thing? What does it have to do with eggs?"

Wang Cuihua looked at the drawing on the paper, holes dug into an iron plate, something she had never seen before.

"Explaining it would be too abstract. Wait until I’ve made one, you’ll understand. Jingting, can you make it?"

Suizi passed the drawing to Jingting, who saw all the measurements had been marked. It wouldn’t be too hard to get a mold made.

The next day, Jingting returned with the item. Suizi was quite satisfied with it and thought it could be used.
