I am chasing a rough man in the 80s -
Chapter 27: These Gradually Warming Feelings
Chapter 27: Chapter 27: These Gradually Warming Feelings
Jiaojiao entered the room, petrified.
Suizi lifted the scissors, cutting off the two large braids that originally reached her waist.
Now, her hair barely touched her shoulders, just long enough to comb into tiny ponytails. Without the two large braids, she felt much more refreshed.
"Aren’t you... heartbroken?" Jiaojiao touched her own tiny horns, ready to bite anyone who dared to touch her hair.
Did her sister-in-law just cut her long hair on a whim?
"Hmm, when it’s time to let go, it’s best to do so. I kept my hair short in my previous life, it’s simple and practical, I am used to it." Suizi explained.
Yesterday, Yu Jingting accidentally burnt a big chunk of her hair while burning newspapers. Keeping her braids would only lead to uneven lengths, so it was better to keep it all short.
"Let’s sell your hair later, I’ll buy you some ribs." Suizi carefully put away the cut braids.
Jiaojiao thought she was constantly craving ribs that Suizi, out of desperation, had to sell her hair for money. Tear-eyed, she looked at Suizi, choking back for quite a while.
"Actually, I’m fine with not eating..."
Her conflicted little expression made Suizi laugh.
"So what do we do now? Your hair is cut. Nothing can be done now."
"I...I’ll help you feed the pigs. I can even feed the geese. At least, I don’t owe you anything."
Suizi’s eyes joined in a curve, not willing to break down Jiaojiao’s unyielding statement.
Yu Jingting came back with two buckets of water and eagerly filled up the water jar. Seeing Suizi sporting a short hairstyle, he was greatly taken aback.
Jiaojiao and Yu Jingting both appeared to be equally shocked. They both felt that Suizi cut her hair because of them.
"I’m going to chop wood." Yu Jingting said guiltily.
"I’m going to feed the pigs!" Jiaojiao also said feeling guilty.
Suizi grabbed hold of Yu Jingting.
"Do you think this hairstyle suits me?" Suizi asked.
"It’s beautiful." Yu Jingting fibbed. It didn’t look much better than the choppy job done by a dog. Suizi really lacked hairdressing skills.
"Did you know that your eyes twitch a lot when you lie?" Suizi handed him a pair of scissors and a wooden comb, "Help me even it out a bit. If you do it nicely, I’ll forgive you."
Yu Jingting cautiously helped her with the hair cut. His hands moved slowly. His warm hand occasionally grazed her cheek as he carefully managed her hair.
"Brother, you kind of remind me of..." Jiaojiao tilted her head thoughtfully to find an appropriate characterization, "A bear holding a block of tofu."
"Pff!" Suizi burst out laughing.
Yu Jingting blushed in embarrassment, waving his scissors at Jiaojiao.
"I think you’re the bear! Always running off at the mouth. I should cut off your little horns!"
"Stop!" Jiaojiao covered the little horns on her head, "I just helped you deal with Li Siyan."
Yu Jingting paused. Suizi seemed surprised.
"What did he want with you?"
Jiaojiao told them about Li Youcai stopping her and took out two pieces of candy from her pocket.
"Brother, do you think these candies have rat poison in them?"
Yu Jingting took a closer look at the candies, scrutinizing them under the sunlight, his expression solemn.
"Yes, they’re poisonous." He peeled off the candy wrapper and casually put it in Suizi’s mouth, "That way, once this beautiful woman faints, I can take advantage—ah!"
Suizi elbowed him in the stomach, her face blushing crimson.
Shameless! Flirting with indecent ideas in front of a child!
"What do you mean by take advantage?" Jiaojiao didn’t understand, she couldn’t differentiate between the words advantage and disgrace.
"Your sister-in-law has tested the candy for poison for you. It’s safe to eat. The remaining one is your reward."
"Thank you, brother."
Suizi looked at Yu Jingting with disdain. The guy fooled the child with the child’s own candy, and even got the child to thank him—how shameless!
"What’s Li Siyan’s motive for prying into our affairs?" Yu Jingting asked.
"Don’t get angry, but he’s probably trying to manipulate me into aborting the baby."
Suizi had an in-depth understanding of Li Youcai. As soon as he squatted, she knew how many eggs he would lay.
"I should have hit him harder last night." Yu Jingting suddenly remembered, "Why did you stop me from beating him up?"
"My reason for stopping you from hitting him last night is the same as my reason for stopping you now. He doesn’t know that we’ve found out about him or that Jiaojiao has told us everything. We have plenty of opportunities to teach him a lesson, and he wouldn’t know that we see through everything."
Suizi did not want Li Youcai to know that she had also been reborn and had gotten a head start on him. If he found out, it would be difficult to send him to prison.
Suizi always believed that the best fate for evildoers was for them to eat prison meals and receive the party’s reeducation.
"You sly minx, tsk." Yu Jingting was not particularly satisfied. These cultured people always proceeding in a roundabout way. Isn’t it more satisfying to just beat him up?
He had a belly full of complaints. However, upon seeing Suizi’s short hair, all complaints retreated back to the brink of his lips. He was, after all, feeling guilty.
At breakfast, Wang Cuihua called for a family meeting.
The west wall of their house’s fence had become loose for some unknown reason.
Suizi gave Yu Jingting a meaningful look. Yu Jingting kept staring at the ceiling.
"The Zhang Family’s wall also seems to have collapsed. I saw them hauling back some cement and bricks. Tiegen, find out how much it costs. Maybe we should also build a brick wall."
Suizi felt a jolt in her heart.
The Zhang Family lived adjacent to Li Youcai’s house.
To Suizi, the word ’wall’ brought a certain psychological shadow.
Although the Yu Family didn’t have a proper labor force, Yu Jingting, despite being a "non-decent" laborer, always found a way to earn money. Building a brick wall was not too difficult a task for the Yu Family.
In her previous life, Li Youcai was able to bury Suizi’s bone ash chain under the wall of the Yu Family, because the Yu Family had moved out and did not live in their old house all the time.
Suizi believed that, not only was she sensitive to the word wall, Li Youcai won’t stay indifferent when he saw his neighbors building one.
"Mother, did the Zhang Family ask you to pick a good day for them to build the wall?"
"It’s not like raising a beam. There’s no need to pick a date."
"You should go take a look at what the neighbors are doing."
Wang Cuihua thought about it and agreed. She could stroll around, and without earning any chicken eggs or goat milk, she could at least gain favor.
After the meal, Yu Jingting pulled Suizi into the room, pinned her against the door, and gave her a hearty kiss. He felt satiated only after a while, then asked.
"What are you up to?"
He didn’t believe that Suizi was simply sending her mother-in-law to curry favor, not after a few instances when they joint-handedly dealt with Li Youcai. Hence, he discovered a hidden side of his wife.
"Once the Zhang Family’s wall comes up, you do this..." Suizi whispered into Yu Jingting’s ear.
"Again with the sacks? Can’t we just give him a head-on attack?" Hearing that she wanted him to sneak up on someone again, Yu Jingting was less willing.
Suizi’s hand gently brushed her shortened hair. Her eyes dropped. Seeing her short hair, Yu Jingting felt a wave of guilt.
"Alright, I’ll do it, ok?"
Suizi found his reluctance amusing. Fearing that he might get upset, she quietly advised.
"Who said that after putting on the sack, you can’t confront him directly? All I’m saying is, you have to wait until Zhang Family’s wall is built before making your move."
Never in his wildest dreams would Li Youcai have thought that Suizi would repeat the trick played on him. It was just like ’encore’, yesterday all over again!
The couple exchanged a silent glance; their mutual understanding was gradually building up.
Their marital relationship was built on their relentless tormenting of Li Youcai. It was beginning to feel a bit like a comradery.
"By the way, you only told me half of it yesterday. You never explained why your name change was because of me?"
