Chapter 223: Chapter 223 - Hard to Explain (Monthly Ticket + Update)
Wang Cuihua, who had been living with Suizi for several months, heard Suizi speak in such a terrifying way for the first time.
Cold, uncontrollable sweats began to trace down her back.
"Suizi, what... what are you going to do?"
"Don’t fret, I will not break the law. Besides, I will not be the one to put them behind bars."
Suizi’s voice was slightly softer than usual, like a gentle breeze drifting across the Naihe Bridge.
"As much as I dislike him, he is still Tiegen’s uncle which makes him one of our immediate family members. Having imediate family members with a criminal record could negatively affect our family."
"So, I won’t make him go to jail, but I will make his remaining life miserable."
Suizi made her ominous declaration in a calm and collected tone, without cursing once.
Wang Cuihua was frightened to her core. She was no stranger to threatening people with bad luck, but hearing those words from Suizi’s mouth sent chills down her spine.
"Mother, I’ve left your dinner in the pot. When Jiaojiao comes back, just heat it up. Don’t wait for me."
"Where are you going?" Wang Cuihua asked.
"To gather some information. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine."
Suizi put on her outerwear, asked the neighbor, Teacher Wang, to look after her mother-in-law, and then left.
Wang Cuihua was extremely anxious. At first, she was worried that Suizi might do something reckless. However, recalling Suizi’s grim expression made her worry that Suizi might do something harmful to others.
The wait at home was nerve-racking.
Suizi headed to the Department Store to gather information from Wang Hui.
Wang Hui was aware of Zhang Linlin’s death and she was still in shock. Suizi’s visit was timely.
In her office, Wang Hui poured Suizi a cup of hot water.
"I heard the news at lunch. An old woman on her morning walk saw stray dogs fussing about something. She went closer and..."
It gave the old woman a heart attack.
The entire city was shocked.
Despite being a northern city, it had good public security. It had been many years since they’d heard of such a horrific incident.
The whole city was discussing the incident.
"Yesterday, Zhang Linlin was still swaggering around our office. Who would have thought... life is so unpredictable." Hearing this, Suizi’s hanging heart finally relaxed.
Even though the news was frightening, the timing cleared Yu Jingting of suspicion.
From yesterday afternoon to today’s morning, Yu Jingting was with Suizi at the hospital for treatments related to her pregnancy.
They were in a six-bed ward, there were plenty of witnesses, Yu Jingting would probably return home soon.
"Wasn’t Wei Si with her?" Wang Hui asked, her face filled with disdain.
"Yeah, that Wei Si, always acting tough when he’s with you, acted all meek around Zhang Linlin. He was just like a dog."
Because of the issues with Yu Jingting, Suizi had been irritable. Unlike her usual self, she spoke straightforwardly and openly.
Unexpectedly, this resonated with Wang Hui’s feelings.
"He’s indeed a dog, you got it right."
"As for the rumors about you having an affair, concocted by him, I don’t believe a single word of it. Looking at him and his dog-like behavior, I feel like he’s just barking!"
Wang Hui banged the table. After so many years, finally, someone spoke a word of justice.
"For being as sensible as you are, from now on, consider yourself my sister!"
Relationships between people can often be very subtle. When someone speaks something that resonates with one’s feelings, they become friends.
True friends, not just acquaintances.
Following this, Wang Hui opened her mouth to share the past she had always been reluctant to bring up.
She and Wei Si were introduced to each other by a colleague and got married. Most marriages in those days started in a similar way.
Both of them were staff at the Department Store. Wei Si was an accountant, and Wang Hui was a sales clerk.
Being a sales clerk was considered a respectable job in those days. Only those who were attractive and articulate could work at a department store.
Several drawbacks of knowing each other so briefly before marriage cropped up after they got married.
Wei Si was a narrow-minded man who would turn every little thing into a big issue, the type that would dwell on issues in his mind.
Wang Hui, as a sales clerk, had to communicate with men at work all the time.
Every time she talked to someone a bit more, Wei Si would jot it down, not mention it on that day, only to bring it up suddenly a week or a fortnight later.
"You have no idea how terrifying he was. Sometimes I was half-asleep, and he would lean and ask me in my ear about what’s what with so and so."
Thinking about that period gave Wang Hui nightmares even now.
"How disgusting." Suizi expressed her revulsion concisely after listening to all of this. How could such a man even have a wife?
"At first, I was stupid and thought his behaviour was due to his love for me. I was unaware of his escalation..."
Wang Hui had a sharp mind, she was eloquent and had the ability to win people’s hearts. The leaders at the Department Store particularly liked her and promoted her to be a supervisor.
Being a supervisor, not only did she earn a higher salary than Wei Si, but she also held significant power.
More and more people came to her to get work done. For certain popular items, Wang Hui always managed to find a way for people to buy them. Her house was always full of gifts during festivals.
As per the planned economy, being a department store supervisor was a glamorous job.
As Wang Hui’s career was taking off, Wei Si grew jealous. His heart twisted beyond recognition, and every little thing Wang Hui said seemed to him like she was looking down on him.
"We initially just argued, which later escalated to him drinking excessively and then resorting to domestic violence."
"Wow, disgusting!" Suizi expressed her disdain in just one word.
"I couldn’t take it anymore and wanted to divorce him, but my parents wouldn’t agree. They were traditional thinkers and believed that divorce would bring shame to the family."
"The ones beating someone are not shameful, but the ones seeking a divorce are? What shame is there?" Suizi didn’t quite understand elder’s way of thinking.
They would rather let their child bear the brunt of the abuse than escape from the situation all because they feared it would be shameful.
To prevent Wang Hui from divorcing, her parents even gifted Wei Si a bicycle in order to win over their son-in-law.
However, this only made Wei Si more arrogant. He believed that Wang Hui couldn’t live without him. After getting drunk, he would beat Wang Hui and then cry on his knees, hitting himself on the mouth while vowing to never do it again.
Initially, Wang Hui was soft-hearted and couldn’t bring herself to divorce him after seeing him like this.
Part of the reason was the pressure from her parents, and the other part was the fact that divorce wasn’t something good in those times. It would invite a lot of gossip.
"What eventually drove me to leave him was one night when I heard a strange sound in the kitchen." Wang Hui followed the sound.
She saw Wei Si sharpening a knife in the dark while muttering her name.
The light was turned off.
In a pitch-black kitchen, the moonlight seeped in, reflected on the sharpened knife, casting a grim, cold light.
Wang Hui’s legs gave away with fright. Afraid that she might scream, she covered her mouth, clung to the wall, and stumbled back to her room trembling.
She didn’t sleep that night. After Wei Si was done sharpening the knife, he came back and cuddled her.
Wang Hui tried her best not to tremble, but the chill in her heart couldn’t be stopped.
"In a marital relationship, one can withstand poverty and hardships, but it’s the lack of trust that is truly unbearable. Once trust is lost, everything becomes scary. I couldn’t take it anymore. So I filed for divorce."
After completing her story, Wang Hui saw the strange look on Suizi’s face, and quickly berated herself.
"Look at me, rambling about this in front of a pregnant woman. Did I scare you?"
Suizi stared blankly at her, her face revealing her complex emotions.
