I am chasing a rough man in the 80s
Chapter 20: Previous Attitude

Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Previous Attitude

There were always many people visiting the old Yu Family house in the morning, mostly seeking Wang Cuihua’s fortune telling services. While Wang Cuihua was busy making money in the east room, Yu Jingting was nowhere to be found.

Suizi stepped out of the door, and immediately bumped into a young mother holding a crying baby.

"Suizi, where are you going?"

"I’m heading to the cooperative store, what’s wrong with your kid?" Suizi noticed the toddler sobbing persistently and reached out to hold the child.

"Don’t even get me started. I was visiting Li Youcai’s house, and the moment this child caught sight of him, he started bawling. He wouldn’t stop no matter what. I’m thinking of asking Auntie Four to look at it," the young mother lowered her voice.

"Suizi, do you think there’s something unclean in their house? Doesn’t Li Youcai seem a bit peculiar today?"

"I’m not sure. I don’t know him too well," Suizi responded, gently patting the baby.

Well, of course he looks peculiar. Anyone would who has to go without their glasses, especially if they have severe myopia. Coupled with the fact that Yu Jingting had puffed up his face with a few good hits, it would be odd if the child didn’t cry at the sight of him.

"In that case, I’ll ask Auntie Four if there’s something unclean in their house."

Suizi thought to herself, isn’t this delivering business right to her mother-in-law?

If you ask someone who claims to communicate with spirits whether there’s something unclean, nine and a half out of ten times they’ll say yes.

"No need to look, just take your child home to rest and everything will be fine."

The small kid fell silent in her arms after a few sniffles, and soon fell asleep. The little one was probably tired after crying all the way.

"People say you’re a jinx, Suizi, but I think you have a good aura - always smiling. Not at all like Li Youcai who’s been looking down his nose at everyone these past few days."

The young mother saved a trip to the medium and appreciated Suizi’s straightforward manner as refreshing as a breeze under the moon.

When Suizi arrived at the cooperative store, Yang Baobao, who had been squatting by the door, bounced over.

"Auntie Suizi!" Yang Baobao was always delighted to see Suizi – ten sticks of candy!

From Yang Baobao, Suizi knew everything was going according to plan, so she bought the child some candy.

With such a young child, memories are limited. Suizi didn’t even need to remind him. He often couldn’t even remember what he had said just half a day before.

Suizi knew Li Youcai very well. He was a firm believer in all sorts of superstitions and lacked the demeanor of a socialist successor.

In his previous life, he enjoyed seeking fortune-tellers and altering the Feng Shui of his property, dabbling in superstitions and foreign spiritual practices. There was not a thing he didn’t believe in.

Now that Suizi thought about it, he must have done quite a few shameful things. He cheated not only himself but also others, always feeling guilty and paranoid.

If he indeed did something shameful, he must be terrified now. Given his nature, he would probably seek a fortune-teller.

In the Wang family’s courtyard, there were two individuals known to seek spiritual advice. Li Youcai, heavily near-sighted and without his glasses, couldn’t travel far to seek the other adviser. This left only Suizi’s mother-in-law.

When she returned to her home courtyard, Suizi fetched half a bucket of water.

She evenly splashed the water on the ground in front of the courtyard.

"What are you doing?"

Suizi jumped.

When she turned around, she saw it was Yu Jingting.

"Don’t you make any noise when you walk?"

"I saw you acting sneakily from far away. Planning a fight with the neighbors or something?"

In the cold weather, the water splashed on the ground would soon freeze. If someone passing by wasn’t careful, they’d slip and fall.

Yu Jingting realized that his seemingly innocent wife was quite the provocateur.

"Comrade Yu Jingting, I have a challenging task for you. Later, sunbathe on the rooftop and remind good people to be cautious as they pass. Just ignore the bad ones," she directed.

"Who are the good ones and who are the bad?" asked Yu Jingting, scratching his chin thoughtfully. Wasn’t he considered the common bad guy in the village?

Was she planning to murder her own husband?

"In any case, you’ll handle it. If you can’t, then you can forget about sleeping in our warm kang," Suizi laid down the law.

"Always threatening me with the kang, woman. Do you think I’m easily intimidated? Where’s the ladder to the roof again..."

When Li Youcai arrived, Suizi was busy preparing lunch.

Even though she’d only stewed one-third of the ribs from yesterday, Jiaojiao was making a fuss wanting more, so Wang Cuihua asked her to cook some more.

"Why are you here—what happened to you?" She rehearsed this scene multiple times in her mind to ensure a perfect delivery.

Li Youcai arrived covered in straw and dirt, with a swollen, bruised face. He had a large bump in the middle of his forehead, and his nose was bleeding.

With his appearance, he could frighten every child in the whole village into crying.

"I’m going to see your Auntie for something, the ice in your street should have been cleared away by now."

"I’ll find Yu Jingting to do it right away, he’s always missing when I need him, so annoying..." Suizi, pretending to complain, walked out the door.

Yu Jingting, perched on the roof with a blade of grass between his teeth, spat off to the side.

These intellectuals, tsk.

What’s the word for them, sneaky.

Li Youcai saw the pork ribs that Suizi had sliced halfway through on the chopping board and felt slightly relieved.

If Suizi had really gone through what he had, how could she talk to him as if nothing had happened?

And she’s still in the mood to simmer pork ribs... The people in the Yu Family sure eat well.

Seeing Li Youcai enter the old lady’s room, a smirk tugged at the corners of Suizi’s mouth. He’d taken the bait.

Feeling a slight pain in her scalp, she looked up and saw Yu Jingting gesturing her to climb up from a ladder at the side, having hit her head with a peanut.

Suizi climbed up the ladder; the view was good, with a grass mat laid on the ground so it wouldn’t feel cold to sit.

"What do you want?"

"You sly little thing, enjoying his misfortune, aren’t you?" Yu Jingting gave her a sideways glance.

"No way." Suizi denied vehemently.

"Let me show you an attitude, it will give you more joy."

"I don’t want to."

"Well, let me show you an attitude then –" He pulled her in and started gnawing on her ~~.

Inside the room, Li Youcai had no idea that the very couple who had tricked him were openly flirting above his head.

"Auntie, I need to talk to you about something."

Wang Cuihua was sitting with her legs crossed at the head of the bed, her eyes half-drooping. Holding a tobacco pipe in her hand, her eyes lit up at the sight of Li Youcai’s unfortunate state.

"Hold your tongue, let me work this out –" Wang Cuihua muttered to herself as she tapped a finger thoughtfully, puffing on the pipe and setting it down on the stove with a serious face.

"Looks like you’re going to be in big trouble, this won’t be easy to resolve The implication was that others pay much less for her counsel, but given the rumors between this kid and her daughter-in-law, they surely won’t have enough."Guilty as charged, Li Youcai didn’t understand Wang Cuihua’s demand for more money, he only concluded it was related to his guilty conscience.

"Auntie, can you see if I have been possessed by a spirit or something?"

"Of course you have." If there isn’t a reason, she’d create one, as a means to charge him.

"Can you tell if it’s a male or a female spirit?"

"It’s a female!" Wang Cuihua immediately replied.

It’s an industry standard to say the specter is of the opposite sex to arouse interest and hoodwink clients.

Li Youcai felt a pang in his heart.

"How do I resolve it?"

Wang Cuihua closed her eyes and shook her head.

"It won’t be easy."

Li Youcai pulled out a fifty-cent note from his pocket and slid it under the bedspread.

Wang Cuihua opened an eye and thought, oh?

"It won’t be easy."

Li Youcai took out another fifty-cent note from his other pocket and put it under the bedspread.

"It won’t be ---"

"Auntie, that’s all I have." Li Youcai’s face turned red.

"As the old seer has said, you’re possessed by a thing, causing you trouble." Wang Cuihua opened her eyes, staring intensely at the pen in Li Youcai’s breast pocket.

"Give me that, you."
