I am chasing a rough man in the 80s -
Chapter 135: Unexpected Visitor
Chapter 135: Chapter 135: Unexpected Visitor
"Sis, is it appropriate to do this during the Chinese New Year?"
Outside Yang Village, a military green jeep is parked on a road where the ice and snow have not yet melted.
In the car, a man in his thirties wearing casual clothes turns to the woman in the passenger seat who is smoking.
The woman’s delicate face is one-third covered by sunglasses, and she is wearing a thin, long windbreaker, totally out of sync with the freezing weather outside.
This city-esque attire seems out of place in a remote rural village like Yang Village.
Yet, she had lived here for nearly twenty years.
The woman ignores her brother’s question as the cigarette in her hand slowly burns.
The man is masculine with a dignified air and usually quite composed.
But even this composed man is at a loss for words in front of his sister’s reckless behavior.
"Even if you want to take Suizi away, couldn’t you wait until after the New Year? Even if you look down on the family she married into, the couple is legally married. Taking away someone’s wife during the Chinese New Year is simply unreasonable."
"Chen Zixiao, your foolish younger brother has already disappointed me, do you want to disappoint me too?"
Chen Zixiao falls silent.
Chen Lijun places her cigarette between her lips, takes a deep puff, and slowly exhales.
"I chose to act during the New Year precisely because I know this village so well. The men here are lazy and useless, whether they are here or not, they act the same."
Men would play mahjong from New Year’s Eve all the way to the eighth day of the Chinese New Year.
During this period, household chores are all left to the women.
With relatives visiting one after the other, the house is in total chaos.
The new bride has to dash about, caring for a large family while others are eating, drinking, and having fun – like an old maid.
Despite the heavy workload, the bride would still be criticized by the in-law’s relatives. Many newlywed brides weep in secret during these days.
As for the silly girl she raised, she didn’t stand a chance.
Chen Lijun’s gaze drifts into the distance, seemingly recalling the chaotic scenes from her own first Chinese New Year after marriage. Her brows furrow slightly.
"I still suggest everyone meet and talk things over. It’s not appropriate to take Suizi without informing the Yu Family, especially considering our younger brother Chen Ziyao’s close relationship with Suizi. If you bring Suizi back, he will definitely tip them off."
Unlike his hot-tempered younger brother, Chen Zixiao always considers things from all angles.
"Don’t mention that fool Chen Ziyao to me, he’s a traitor."
Chen Lijun recalls the last time she asked her little brother to gather information.
The foolish brother didn’t manage to get any valuable information from him. Instead, he was buddy-buddy with Yu Jingting, constantly referring to Tiegen as his big brother.
If it wasn’t for that, Chen Lijun wouldn’t have to take matters into her own hands.
This time she came to take Suizi away.
She chose Chinese New Year’s Eve because she was all too familiar with the customs and people of Yang Village.
On this day men would be busy playing cards, drinking, bragging, and she could easily whisk Suizi away in the chaos without Yu Jingting noticing.
She wanted to see if Yu Jingting could stomach his daughter-in-law running off when the family was busiest. She didn’t believe that a rural despot like him could take it.
Firecrackers burst in the village from time to time, set off by the children. A few children run over from afar.
The one in the lead is a little girl in a red outfit, on top of her two tufts of hair are cute little crocheted strawberries. She is pretty and well-dressed, easily distinguishable from the other children.
Chen Lijun squints her eyes, searching her memory for information about this beautiful little girl.
This is Yu Jingting’s younger sister. When Chen Lijun left Yang Village, Jiaojiao was still a small child. She could hardly believe how much she had grown in just three years.
The children let out a collective gasp when they see the car.
Such a rare sight in the village, they swarm over excitedly.
Jiaojiao proudly touches the hood of the car, an immediate sense of superiority washing over her.
"I’ve seen a car before. My sister-in-law took me to the city on one, there were lots!"
"Your sister-in-law treats you too well!" One of the children says enviously, everyone knows Jiaojiao has a fairy-like sister-in-law.
She is skilled, always making Jiaojiao beautiful hair accessories, and always buying Jiaojiao delicious treats.
"Of course! My sister-in-law is the best sister-in-law! See these? These two strawberries on my head, they are crocheted by my sister-in-law! Haha, cherries are so last year! My sister-in-law said that as long as I keep up with my grades, she’ll crochet me a whole fruit garden!"
Must be making you kids green with envy!
Jiaojiao has picked up the habit of bragging from Yu Tiegen.
Once she starts talking about her sister-in-law she’s proud of, she’s like a chatterbox that can’t stop.
"See this? White Rabbit milk candy! My sister-in-law bought them from the city! Smell it!"
Jiaojiao pulled one out of her pocket, making everyone else salivate instantly, suddenly their mixed fruit candies weren’t so enticing anymore.
"This little girl is quite interesting, her sister-in-law treats her well."
Chen Zixiao doesn’t know Jiaojiao’s identity.
He also has a daughter of the same age, and his eyes softened at Jiaojiao’s innocent show-off.
Missing his wife and daughter.
If it wasn’t for his stubborn sister insisting on having him over for Chinese New Year’s Eve, he’d be enjoying some quality time with his wife and child too.
Chen Lijun cast a cold glance at her younger brother, displeasure seeping from the corners of her mouth.
Relating to her brother’s comment, "sister-in-law treats her well," Chen Lijun was very displeased.
That child Hansui, what a waste of time raising her.
She hasn’t ever knitted anything for her own mother, and she’s prancing around crocheting some fruit garden. Hum!
"The scarf my sister-in-law knitted for my brother is gorgeous, it’s beige! My brother looks even more handsome than Xu Wenqiang wearing it!"
This sentence from Jiaojiao directly triggered Chen Lijun to stub out her cigarette.
Even she got involved?!
What a joke!
Ugh!
Jiaojiao held up the drawing in her hand, earning a chorus of awe from the kids.
"Have you ever seen? My sister-in-law drew this!"
The car window rolled down, scaring the children into exclamations.
Turns out, there was someone in the car.
"Little friend, can I take a look at this drawing you’re holding?" Chen Lijun asked.
"Who are you?" Jiaojiao asked.
"I’m a friend of your sister-in-law, is your sister-in-law’s name Chen Hansui?"
Chen Zixiao was surprised, so the ’sister-in-law’ the kid kept talking about turned out to be his niece!
"Huh? Does my sister-in-law have a friend who drives?" Jiaojiao, hearing her sister-in-law’s name, examined her closely.
The more she looked at this woman in sunglasses, the more familiar she seemed.
She had seen Chen Lijun when she was younger, but as a child, she couldn’t remember.
"My brother told me not to talk to strangers!" Jiaojiao wanted to run.
"Did she draw your father?" Chen Lijun’s question stopped Jiaojiao in her tracks.
"How’d you know? My brother said it doesn’t look like him."
"Hand it over." Chen Lijun grabbed the drawing, looked it over, her lips pressing tighter.
In order to avoid reliving those unpleasant memories, she deliberately discouraged Suizi from anything related to drawing. Yet it seems this little girl taught herself.
You could tell her skill was impressive, but the drawing indeed didn’t resemble him.
Chen Lijun picked up a pencil from the car and started making alterations on the drawing.
"Hey, hey, hey! Don’t touch my sister-in-law’s drawing!" Jiaojiao became anxious.
"Your sister-in-law may not remember what your father looks like, but I do. If I can draw it, you bring your sister-in-law to see me, deal?"
