Chapter 131: Chapter 131: Listening to his Secret History at his Secret Base (Monthly Ticket + Update)

"How long are you going to follow me for? I told you to go home. Didn’t you hear me?"

Yu Jingting had walked a long way, holding in his frustration, until eventually, he stopped at a fork in the road, outside the village.

Behind him, less than thirty meters away, Suizi also came to a halt.

She’d followed him all the way from their house, ignoring him every time he’d told her to go home.

She walked when he did and stopped when he did, all the while maintaining a safe distance.

Yu Jingting had assumed she’d be tired after a while since she was pregnant and her stamina wasn’t at its best.

But here she was, having followed him all the way, causing him a great deal of anxiety.

There hadn’t been any snow over the past two days, so the roads weren’t that bad. But there was always the chance of slipping on ice.

Yu Jingting was worried she might lose her footing and fall.

Deciding he’d put up with it long enough, Yu Jingting walked up to her, a rehearsed scene of yelling at her playing out in his mind. He intended to scare this stubborn girl into tears and send her home!

But once he got in front of Suizi, the warmth emanating from her smiling face made him forget what he was about to say.

Suizi smiled brightly at him and pulled a warm hard-boiled egg from her pocket.

"Would you like one?"

"You should go home to eat," he replied. Faced with such a radiant smile, how could anyone yell at her?

"I also brought one for myself," Suizi said as she pulled out another one.

Yu Jingting was momentarily confused. By the time he snapped out of it, he was leading Suizi by the hand down a country lane.

"Where are you taking me?" Suizi asked.

We are almost there...found it."

Yu Jingting stopped, leading Suizi to a slope. After pushing aside the messy dry hay, they found a hole.

They were outside the village, with few people around.

"I’ve lived here for so long, and I didn’t even know this place existed!" Suizi exclaimed.

The hole wasn’t very high, just over a meter. An adult would have to hunch over to get in. The space was quite spacious, however, and could comfortably accommodate three to four adults sitting side by side.

"Do you really think you could’ve discovered my secret base?" Yu Jingting said, spreading more dry hay over the ground.

Suizi quickly measured the space mentally.

Okay, there wasn’t enough room for two adults to fool around inside, ruling out the possibility that this was a place for trysts.

Unaware of the thoughts racing through her mind, Yu Jingting motioned for her to sit on the hay.

"Eat quickly, then go home."

The cave shielded them from the wind - less chance to make her stomach ache while eating.

"This secret base of yours...you’ve had it for a while, haven’t you?"

"Of course."

He’d started using it when he was eight or nine years old and continued until he was a teenager. Even the night before he got married, he sat here for a while, smoking and daydreaming about his future life.

Of course, he wouldn’t tell a woman any of this.

"After the baby in your belly is born, I’ll pass this secret base on to him." Yu Jingting to her stomach, looking rather pleased with himself.

"Oh, I’ll thank you on behalf of our child for being so generous," Suizi responded perfunctorily, with no sincerity in her voice.

Obviously, their child wouldn’t grow up in the village, so the "inheritance" of this hole would likely be impossible.

After eating their eggs, Yu Jingting planned to send her home. But once they finished, she clung to him, taking advantage of the opportunity to snuggle up against him. As the wind howled outside, they enjoyed a few moments of peace and quiet together.

"Are you still angry?" Suizi asked, gently laying her head over his heart, trying to capture his heartbeat through his cotton clothes.

Yu Jingting let out a hum as he ran his fingers through her short hair.

"I was never angry to begin with."

What a sham! What an act! Suizi thought, though she merely nodded along obediently.

His mood was beyond anger; he had almost lost control of himself before.

"Aren’t you going to ask why I was upset?" Yu Jingting was still wondering. Even if she asked, he wouldn’t tell her.

But she simply snuggled against him like a kitten, not asking anything.

"If you felt like telling me, you would have done so. If you don’t want to tell, there’s no point even if I pry."

Her soft voice emanated from his arms, miraculously soothing his restless heart.

The cave was silent, except for their shallow breathing.

Just as Suizi thought he was going to continue with his silent treatment, his low voice echoed in her ear.

"They are planning to dig up our father’s grave."

During dinner, Yu Jingting suddenly thought about how his relatives couldn’t afford to put vegetables on the table at a funeral, and it came to him.

All the ancestral graves of the Yu family were together. His father had been buried there after his death.

Starting from last year, the area had begun to cave in a little. The families discussed relocating to a better place.

The reason firm elderly woman from the Yu family had proposed to Wang Cuihua the outrageous idea of "you pay for ox, I get it" was because of this grave relocation issue.

"If she doesn’t agree, she might sabotage our father’s grave when the relocation happens. I don’t believe in ghosts and spirits, but our mom does. Our grandmother, despite appearing tough, can always manipulate our mother using our father."

"Huh? Disturbing graves brings misfortune for five generations. Doesn’t your grandmother know this? She wouldn’t be so cruel to her own son, would she?" Suizi asked, unable to believe it.

Someone treating their deceased son in this manner just for petty gains was beyond her comprehension.

"She’s not his biological mother. She always suspected that father was the child of another woman my grandfather was involved with."

"What?"

"Our mother doesn’t know any of this."

"How did you find out?"

"When my grandfather was still alive, I accidentally made him drunk. He said it."

"....At the same age as Jiaojiao, you already had so much cunning in you? Yu Tiegen, how dare you always accuse me of having millions of schemes!"

Yu Jingting looked visibly annoyed.

How odd this woman’s focus always was.

"No wonder I felt your grandmother acted oddly, like a mythical creature, always doing incongruent things."

If she wasn’t his biological grandmother, it would explain her odd behaviors.

"When our father had just passed away, she led a group of people to our house and took away anything that could be taken. I remember there was a camphor wooden box that father had made for our mother by hand. They carried it away."

Wang Cuihua was sobbing so hard her voice was hoarse. He was too young to stop them as they recklessly took things.

"So where is the box now?"

"It’s long gone. I sneaked into my uncle’s house and set it on fire that night."

"Why did you burn it? You could’ve tried to get it back. It would’ve been kept as a memento," Suizi regretted.

His father-in-law had passed away ten years ago, but his mother-in-law would often speak about him. They must have shared a particularly close relationship.

On the day Jiaojiao received her examination results, Suizi witnessed her mother-in-law quietly crying in a small room, uttering her father-in-law’s name.

These strange relatives had seen how attached the mother-in-law was to the father-in-law and now threatened her with this. They were simply too evil.

"So, when you stormed off angrily, you weren’t planning to exhume the family tombs, right?" Suizi asked, remembering his impulsive act of burning the box.

And didn’t he head in the direction of the cemetery?

"Digging up ancestral graves is something juvenile that ten-year-old me would have done."

"Oh? Then can I ask... what was twenty-year-old you planning on doing?"

"You’re probably better off not knowing," Yu Jingting said, glancing at her belly.

What he was about to do was perhaps not something suitable for a pregnant woman to hear.
