I am chasing a rough man in the 80s
Chapter 126: A Benefactor Like a Mountain

Chapter 126: Chapter 126: A Benefactor Like a Mountain

There stood a woman in front of the Chen family’s main entrance.

At first glance, she appeared to be in her forties, but she was just past thirty. She had tanned skin and wrinkles had begun to appear on her face.

The women in the village, exposed to the elements, had rough skin that made them look older than their actual age.

Wang Cuihua still looked charming, partly because of her natural beauty, and partly because she spent most of her time indoors, telling fortunes, away from the sun’s harsh rays.

After pondering for a bit, Suizi recognized the woman as Yang Hong, whose husband Wang Dazhuang was the one gallivanting around with Lun Lamei.

Lamei had a severe hemorrhage and was sent to the hospital. She never returned, presumably having been taken by her mother to another place to avoid the scandal.

Suizi wasn’t one to gossip or go out much, but even sitting at home, she could hear the townsfolk talking about it when they came to see her mother-in-law.

The tales of Lun Lamei were the talk of the village, with colorful details added to each telling.

Tales such as Wang Dazhuang tearing down willows, and Lun Lamei’s blood staining two miles of the ground.

Some details were so scandalous that even the children had to cover their ears.

At first, Suizi thought that Yu Jingting was the one spreading the gossip, but he scoffed at the suggestion.

He’d been keeping himself busy by going hunting in the mountains every day. He didn’t have time for idle chatter.

It wasn’t like the village doctor, Wang Ming, to engage in rumor-mongering either.

Suizi finally realized the source of the rumors when she saw Yang Hong outside her house, jumping up and down in anger.

It had to be Yang Hong spreading them.

"Lun Lamei, you whore! Even carrying a bastard child, you dare to seduce my man! I’ll curse your eight generations!"

Yang Hong vented her anger until her voice went hoarse. After cursing at Lamei, she started swearing at Chen Kaide.

This string of curses, laden with graphic details, made Suizi furrow her brows.

She couldn’t understand Yang Hong’s actions.

If Yu Jingting were to cheat on her, she wouldn’t direct her anger at the mistress.

She wasn’t good with words, she wouldn’t be able to curse as effectively as a mistress.

Not to mention, she definitely couldn’t out-argue her husband, who was a master in verbal sparring.

All she would do was quietly seek a divorce, and depending on the severity of the cheating, she would decide whether to perform a physical castration on him.

Suizi found Yang Hong’s public derogatory rant to be distasteful. It wouldn’t benefit her in any way and was the worst possible way of handling the situation.

But it was Yang Hong’s prerogative to handle her emotional hurt whichever way she chose, including cursing Lun Lamei.

As long as she didn’t involve Suizi.

"Chen Kaide, you old bastard! You couldn’t keep control of that slut Lun Lamei! You deserve to have no sons or daughters!"

"Enough." Hearing this, Suizi, who had been about to leave, turned around.

Seeing Suizi, Yang Hong momentarily startled. She looked around but didn’t see Yu Jingting. She let out a sigh of relief.

"Chen Hansui, keep your nose out of this. This is between me and Lun Lamei!"

"I don’t care about your feud. But you’ve got no right to involve me. What do you mean by ’no sons or daughters’? Am I not a daughter of this family?" Suizi stared at Yang Hong, her sharp gaze startling her into stepping back.

"I... I was just blabbering."

Yang Hong wasn’t afraid of Suizi, but she was afraid of the powerful Yu family behind Suizi, especially Yu Jingting, who was known throughout the village as a formidable figure.

Suizi merely spoke two sentences and Yang Hong ran off as if she had seen a ghost.

Leaving Suizi to stare at the wood door splattered with red paint.

Yang Hong had repeatedly emphasized ’no sons or daughters’.

If she was only venting her hatred towards Lun Lamei and Kaide, there was no need to utter such a curse.

Recalling what Jingting had told her last time about the secrets her mother revealed when drunk, Suizi felt as if she could piece together an answer from the fragments of information buzzing in her head.

"Excuse me, is there someone here named Yu Tiegen?" A sudden voice interrupted Suizi’s thoughts. She turned around to see a middle-aged man behind her.

He was dressed like an ordinary farmer, but his accent was not from around here. Suizi was sure she didn’t know him, but his face was strangely familiar.

Where had she seen him before...?

"What do you want with my brother?" Jiaojiao asked.

"What’s your sister-in-law’s name?" The man continued to question.

Before Jiaojiao could answer, Suizi pinched her hand, signaling her to keep quiet.

This man, whose intentions were unclear, was better off not knowing too much.

"Oh, don’t misunderstand, I mean no harm. I’ve come to collect ginseng. Your sister-in-law saved my daughter a few days ago, but I didn’t know her name. All I could find out was that your brother is named Yu Tiegen."

"Tiegen was his former name. He doesn’t go by that name now." Suizi corrected.

When it came to calling him Jingting, Suizi was more insistent than anyone.

"So, you must be the benefactor?" The middle-aged man looked Suizi up and down and nodded, "Yes, my daughter described you as tall and sturdy, like a mountain. It must have been you."

Suizi was speechless.

Tall and sturdy, like a mountain... really?

Is this how she’s regarded?

"I’m so relieved to have found you. If you hadn’t saved her, my daughter wouldn’t have made it back. She’s a bit slow and can’t remember things clearly, but she was able to describe your distinct features. It must have been destiny."

The man nodded his head at Suizi again and again, affirming the image of the ’mountain-like benefactor’ described by his daughter.

Summoning a wry smile, Suizi realized who this man was.

In a decade or so, this man would make it to the Rich List, just like Yu Jingting. They’d even become rivals.

This man’s store would certainly be located opposite Jingting’s and their rivalry would manifest itself in various visible and invisible ways.

Suizi recalled overhearing a gossip that Jingting’s family had once been kidnapped, and this man was the likely culprit.

Sure enough, soon after, this man’s younger brother’s leg was broken and it was rumored to be Jingting’s doing.

Bigwigs squabbling was like a clash between immortals; fascinating to watch, but the truth was hard to decipher. To Suizi, both parties were not innocent.

Looking at this man’s current attire, he was just an ordinary farmer.

But the fact that he had thought of collecting ginseng out of season suggested he was a shrewd fellow.

The ’maiden’ referred to by the man must be the mentally slow girl she had saved a few days ago.

Having rescued the child of her future husband’s greatest competitor, Suizi did not regret her actions. Even if they were destined to become competitors, that was in the future.

However, she was offended by his description of her as ’mountain-like’.

"You don’t need to know my name, nor thank me. Just make sure to look after your daughter next time, to not lose her again. After all, she might not encounter a ’mountain-like’ person to save her the next time."

Heh, mountain.

Suizi held a grudge.

Seeing her indifference, the man hurriedly took out a red cloth-wrapped item from his pocket and offered it to Suizi.

"Please accept this. Consider it a token of appreciation from my daughter and me."

"No need." Suizi recognized the shape of the bundle and guessed what was inside.

She had saved the girl out of compassion, not expecting anything in return.

About to turn away, the man grabbed her arm in a hurry and forced the red cloth into her hand.

Their tug of war was observed by Yang Hong, who hadn’t left yet.

"Heh, Chen Hansui really takes after her mother. Both are up to no good."
