I am chasing a rough man in the 80s
Chapter 116 Say it Again

Chapter 116: Chapter 116 Say it Again

The old Yu Family was the first to butcher pigs in Yang Village. By the time Wang Cuihua returned home, the pig had already been slaughtered.

The pig’s head was hung on the railing, and the bloodstains in the courtyard were all cleaned up.

Yu Jingting, with a cigarette in his mouth, was directing people to stuff the blood sausages, while also inspecting the courtyard for any residual stains.

Suizi was faint-hearted and couldn’t bear to see such scenes. The courtyard must be tidied up before she returned home from work.

"Has Tiegen’s mother come back?" The dame mixed in with the crowd helping out, maintaining a seemingly friendly countenance.

"What are you doing here?" Wang Cuihua frowned at the dame, suspecting her of coming to snatch some pork from the butchering. She had no intention of giving her even a bite.

"Forget it, we’re all relatives. Let’s not be petty." Yu Jingting pulled Wang Cuihua into the room.

He had already discussed with Suizi that they should give an extra bowl of pork dish to the dame’s family. After all, the dame’s son-in-law had been a big help carrying all the gold and silver, which was no easy task.

"What happened last night?" Wang Cuihua had heard on her way home that something had occurred at their house the previous night. She was so anxious that as soon as she entered the house, she asked Yu Jingting.

Yu Jingting recounted the events, telling Wang Cuihua everything except for the discovery of the treasure.

After hearing everything, Wang Cuihua was terrified, patting her chest and praying for their ancestors to bless them and for the spirits to show mercy.

"We should all thank Suizi. If it hadn’t been for her, what would we have done with Jiaojiao—Jiaojiao is fine, right?"

"Nothing’s wrong, she was still hopping around asking me for candy money this morning."

With Suizi always keeping an eye on Jiaojiao’s mental state, Yu Jingting felt a lot more at ease.

It was only then that Wang Cuihua felt relieved. No wonder her son decided to butcher the pig ahead of time.

To show gratitude to their fellow villagers who helped search for their child in the middle of the night, they had to butcher this pig.

A large iron pot was filled with a hearty pork dish. Fresh pork mixed with the sweet and sour crunch of pickled cabbage, along with newly-stuffed blood sausage, was simmering, filling the entire courtyard with a delicious aroma within a short while.

Butchering a pig usually involved setting up two tables. While waiting for the dish to cook, the men would set up tables for a game of cards, and the women would sit on the kang and chat.

Dropping her grandeur from the previous few days, the dame was making small talk with Wang Cuihua. After bringing up some inconsequential family matters, her eyes rolled around, spewing malice.

"Tiegen’s mother, I’ve got something on my mind, but I’m not sure if it’s appropriate to say it—"

"When you yourself know it’s inappropriate, then there’s no need to say it."

Yu Jingting, who was playing cards on the ground, casually interjected and declared, "I win!" by discarding a card.

The dame was choked up and seeing Wang Cuihua chatting with the other women as if nothing had happened, she felt resentful. Seizing the opportunity when Yu Jingting was out using the toilet, the dame continued speaking.

"Tiegen’s mother, you have a big heart. For such a big event like butchering a pig, your daughter-in-law doesn’t lend a hand?"

"Do you think everyone is like the lazy child you raised, who sits on the kang all day gossiping? My Suizi has a job."

Wang Cuihua shot the dame a glance, knowing full well that no good words would come out of her mouth.

"The school isn’t that busy. Couldn’t she take a leave and come home? Everything is left to the mother-in-law to do. The daughters-in-law nowadays, tsk tsk, are very different from our times."

The dame was itching to incite some mother-in-law and daughter-in-law conflict, and kept stirring the pot.

This topic, indeed, touched upon the interests of the old ladies on the kang, excluding Wang Cuihua.

When mothers-in-law gather, there’s always grumbling about their daughters-in-law. Once this topic was broached, there was no stopping the complaints.

After a while of listening, Wang Cuihua started feeling irritated and excused herself under the pretext of checking on the food, so she could escape outside for some fresh air.

When Suizi returned with Jiaojiao, the old dame was in the middle of a rant, gesturing wildly while sitting cross-legged on the kang bed. Catching sight of Suizi, she escalated her pitch and increased her volume.

"Look here, all these lazy daughters-in-law really need to be disciplined. They are not helping out at home even on a pig-slaughtering day, what’s the use of having them around? Are they meant to be treated like our ancestors or what!"

Suizi blinked at this... Was she the target of the old woman’s tirade?

Suddenly, a pair of large hands rested heavily on Suizi’s shoulders. The lax voice of Yu Jingting resounded from behind her.

"According to old madam’s theory, mother-in-laws should beat their daughters-in-law. You’re still alive and not killed off by my grandmother until now, must be the miracle of life. Ah, dear wife, you should go have a chat with Sixth Auntie later, ask her how many times she has beaten Li after she got married— I reckon she is far lazier than you. Maybe if she gets beaten a few more times by Sixth Auntie, she might change her ways."

"Sixth Auntie" referred to the old woman’s relative by marriage, and "Li" was the old lady’s actual daughter. The old woman was trying to indirectly criticize Suizi, but Yu Jingting’s retort had left her speechless.

Suizi chuckled lightly. His quick comeback was rather amusing...

Being rebuffed by Yu Jingting left the old woman without words. Everyone in the room laughed, causing her to lose face. She sulked but stayed put without changing her location. After all, the pig-slaughtering lunch was almost ready.

Yu Jingting carried on with his card game, while Suizi was thinking of heading to the kitchen to see if she could help. However, she was coerced by Yu Jingting to sit by his side under the pretense of being his lucky charm.

Actually, Suizi knew better. He was just concerned that she was pregnant and shouldn’t work too hard. The large pot meal in the chaotic kitchen wouldn’t earn her anything aside from praise for her virtue.

Being a wife to a vagabond like him allowed for certain privileges, and not caring about reputation was one of them. With Yu Jingting restraining her from moving, no one dared to comment. After all, no one would dare to blame Yu Jingting.

"Peel an orange for me," Yu Jingting requested, adding in a playful boast after. "My wife is so obedient, doing whatever I ask her to."

Suizi delicately peeled the orange and brought it up to his mouth. After one bite, Yu Jingting started complaining it was too sour and told Suizi to eat it herself.

The orange was chillingly sweet and didn’t taste sour at all. Suizi happily continued eating, not letting on about his little deception. She consumed a piece and fed him one, contentedly pretending to be the lucky charm. She enjoyed lazing around in plain sight.

The old dame watched, growing increasingly annoyed.

Her own daughter just had a baby recently and compared to the treatment Suizi was getting, it was like night and day. Her daughter had been constantly busy even while pregnant and almost miscarried due to the stress.

Why does Suizi receive such different treatment?

Yu Jingting kept winning the card game as Suizi sat by his side. It was unclear whether it was due to his good luck or because Suizi was his lucky charm.

The women sitting on the kang bed near him were neighbors close to the Yu family. Seeing Yu Jingting’s consecutive wins, someone joked:

"Tiegen really lucked out by marrying such a fortune-bringing wife. Ever since Suizi has been married into the family, everything seems to be going well. Even their card games are profitable!"

This comment was met with a chorus of agreement.

Yu Jingting’s good reputation in the village had been growing over time. He has caught multiple thieves one after another. Even making money through selling herbal medicine was initially his idea.

Old madam was envious again. She had to introduce disharmony in the midst of a harmonious atmosphere.

"Suizi is quite ’fortunate’, isn’t she? So fortunate indeed that her sister-in-law got ’lucky’ into the mountains. If Tiegen hadn’t come back early today, maybe Jiaojiao would also have been ’lucky’ to go into the mountains..."

As soon as these words were said, the room fell into an eerie silence.

The jovial ambience from a moment ago froze into an icy hush.

In the pervading quiet, the rhythmic thumping of Yu Jingting’s hand hitting the table echoed in the room.

"What did you just say? I didn’t hear you clearly. Could you, repeat that?"
