Chapter 1022: Chapter 1022 Damn, Let Him Pretend Successfully
Because he was dressed so shabbily, he was mistaken for a beggar and given money.
Yu Jingting, with his explosive temper, surprisingly didn’t have an outburst on the spot. He reached out, took the money, and grinned at the person, "Thanks, Boss. May the Boss make a fortune."
Suizi raised an eyebrow, wondering what mischief this guy was up to.
The Boss, praised for becoming wealthy, was all smiles. The mentality of these jade stone gamblers was pretty much the same as those who played the stock market.
Suizi had seen a joke before. It said that an old lady selling oranges would rush to the stock market’s door to sell her oranges whenever the market was in the green. This old lady, who only understood red and green, made her fortune that way.
Because when the market was in the green, everyone was making money, they would be in a good mood and spend carelessly. If the market fell, everyone was losing money and would see the world through a haze of frustration.
"Boss, what did you get from the cut?" Yu Jingting asked.
"Cut some ’floating flowers,’ but what do you know?" the money-giving Boss said, brimming with pride, his words carrying a hint of disdain.
To solidify his image of a country bumpkin, Yu Jingting stuffed his hands into his sleeves.
"I just came out from the village, I really don’t understand much. Um, say, if you cut a piece of ice type purple jade, does that count as an increase in value?"
This remark drew a burst of laughter from the people around.
"A beggar also wants to gamble on stones?"
"And ice type purple jade, what are you dreaming of? Even getting a piece of purple would be tough. Most purple jade comes in bean type or glutinous type, where do you find the ice type?"
The more the people around laughed, the more nuanced the expressions of Suizi and her husband became.
Suizi thought to herself that Yu Tiegen, that rascal, was even more skilled than her at playing the fool to catch the wise.
This tactic of understatement followed by a sudden flourish was quite refreshing.
"Oh, have you never seen one? How about I cut one for you, let everyone have a look?"
When Yu Jingting said this, the crowd laughed even harder.
The stall manager couldn’t stand it anymore and came out to shoo them away.
"Go on, beg over there, don’t hold up our business."
With that, he reached out to push Yu Jingting. But as soon as he did, Yu Jingting grabbed his wrist and clamped down like a pair of pliers, causing the man to cry out in pain.
"Somebody’s causing trouble here, come quick!"
"What trouble? I’m here to buy stones, bring out your best!" Yu Jingting shook off the manager’s hand.
Several burly men then emerged from behind the stall, each holding a tool of sorts.
These high-end stone stalls always kept toughs on hand in case of disturbances.
"Buy stones? You? We don’t have cheap ones here. Go over to those other stalls, play with some small scraps, don’t waste our time!" The manager waved dismissively, the spot where Yu Jingting had grabbed him burning with pain.
"Open for business but shooing customers away? I’m not buying scraps, I want your showcase pieces."
"Showcase pieces? Haha, our showcase item costs 200,000. Can you afford it? Look at him, does he look like he can afford it?" The manager pointed at Yu Jingting, provoking laughter from the crowd.
The burly toughs were already moving towards Yu Jingting, planning to escort him out as he was disturbing their business.
"What if we can afford it? Are you all going to kneel down and sing ’The East Is Red’ for us?" Yu Jingting took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, putting one in his mouth with his signature move.
"Never mind singing ’The East Is Red,’ if you want, I’d sing ’Oh Brother, Oh Sister, Such Deep Affection’ all night!"
The remark prompted laughter from everyone again.
The manager, who intended to join in the laughter, suddenly couldn’t when he saw the cigarette case that Yu Jingting took out.
The cigarettes were Yuxi, a good brand; it wasn’t strange for someone visiting this stall to smoke good cigarettes.
What was strange was the case he had around the pack.
Ice type with ’floating flowers’ in jadeite.
Jadeite that was so lively and vibrant.
Such material, if used for jewelry, would be quite valuable.
Seeing such a large jadeite cigarette case, in his decades of career, the manager had never encountered anything like it.
Suizi watched him pull out the gadget, a black line forming on her forehead.
When had he prepared this thing?
The cigarette case, filled with Yu Jingting’s nouveau riche aesthetic, was his own secretive project, the stone stolen from the fourth elder’s safe and crafted by his hands.
After seeing the finished product, the fourth elder silently put down his chopsticks and chased him around the house in several circles, intending to beat his rebellious son.
The jadeite was reserved by the fourth elder for making bracelets for the female members of the family, but Yu Tiegen turned it into a cigarette case.
Only top-quality jadeite could be used to make bracelets, and a piece with potential for a bangle was a big deal.
That potential, it wasn’t something that just came with any stone; the jadeite needed to be of great quality, free from any cracks or ideally even cotton-like inclusions. Yet, Yu Tiegen, that profligate son, had taken it to make a cigarette case.
Suizi, fearful of people discovering her wealth, always covered her bracelets with intestine-shaped hair ties.
Yu Jingting, on the other hand, nonchalantly brought out the cigarette case, keeping it hidden from Suizi all along the journey, just waiting for the right moment to show off.
Based on her understanding of him, Yu Jingting might well have practiced this part over and over again in his mind.
"Boss, please come inside," the steward said, bowing and gesturing them with the respect usually shown to a completely different kind of person.
This left the onlookers utterly astounded; they had all been facing away from Yu Jingting and hadn’t seen the cigarette case in his hand, puzzled by the sudden change in the steward’s attitude.
Having put on enough of a show, Yu Jingting turned and said to everyone with a cupped fist, "I wish you all prosperity!"
The steward gave a knowing look, and the several toughs got busy moving chairs and pouring tea.
"Boss, you mentioned earlier that you wanted to see our store’s prized stone. Were you serious?"
Yu Jingting tapped gently on the table with his finger, not saying a word.
The steward got a shock and realized that he was dealing with a connoisseur.
Yu Jingting hadn’t said anything, but those few taps he gave were well understood by those within the industry.
It was his way of negotiating a price.
There was a set of hand signals unique to the jadeite trade, incomprehensible to anyone but the seasoned enthusiasts.
"I don’t have the authority to make this decision. Allow me a moment, I’ll consult with my superiors," he said.
The crowd outside, who had gathered to watch the excitement, began to whisper among themselves, unable to understand what was being played out.
The Zhang Family’s shop steward was notoriously snobbish; only the most esteemed customers were ever invited for tea, so how could these two beggars have earned an invitation?
After drinking half a cup of tea, a man dressed in a long robe, flanked by two attendants, approached.
He greeted Yu Jingting with a bow.
"My name is Zhang De, the junior boss of this establishment. Would you be the one interested in our store’s gemstone?"
"Whether I’m interested depends on your sincerity," Yu Jingting replied.
Suizi and Yu Jingting exchanged glances. Zhang De was the current family head’s eldest son.
The heir apparent.
His status equivalent to that of the fourth elder in the Hu Family.
A gemstone to beckon the junior boss himself.
Suizi felt relieved as she noticed Zhang De’s gaze fixed on Yu Jingting.
Thankfully her man resembled his mother; had he looked like the fourth elder, their cover would have been blown.
"You are straightforward, so I’ll do the same. I’ll offer you this price," Zhang De said elegantly, making a gesture for one hundred and eighty thousand.
He seemed familiar to Suizi, his costume and refined manner of speaking reminding her of someone. Who was it?
While Suizi was still pondering, Yu Jingting spoke up.
"Bring out the stone, I’ll pay in cash."
