Chapter 77: Chapter 75 Adjustments Are Useless_1

Having breached the werewolf attack, they encountered new assaults along the way; this time, it was a large group of Ghouls, and Zheng Yichen felt a pang of annoyance at the sight.

Ghouls weren’t limited to being former humans; any being of a certain size could potentially become a Ghoul.

Even though Ghouls were far less combat-capable than werewolves, their numbers were numerous, multiple times that of the werewolves. To deal with these Ghouls, Zheng Yichen had to use up two more mini grenades. He didn’t have many of those left, counting the ones he’d used before.

Their number was now dwindling.

"What’s going on, why are there so many Black Darkness creatures," a Hunter-Demon panted, looking at the corpses scattered across the ground. Ghouls didn’t have the intellect of werewolves, attacking ferociously without fear of death. What was more concerning was that the virus on the Ghouls was vicious—if not handled properly, wounds would become rapidly infected.

They carried some medicine, and this time they were fine, but what about next time?

To encounter so many werewolves could be called a coincidence, but could this time also be a coincidence?

"Change our route!" John said decisively, pulling out a map: "When I was planning the route, I also considered alternate paths."

However, the new route was of no use, as they again encountered new Black Darkness creatures, among which were even the legendary ’Night Devils’, beings similar to vampires but more powerful and closer in form to ’demons’.

"...Everyone, give it your all!" Raymond took a deep breath and pulled out the Subduing Item: "Otherwise, we’re all going to die here."

"Hand over that...!" The Night Devil fixed its gaze on the Subduing Item in Raymond’s hand, emitting a sound like the scraping of shattered glass.

"As I thought," Raymond tossed the Subduing Item lightly: "The frequent attacks by Black Darkness creatures we’ve encountered along the way have been caused by this thing."

"Did our employer set us up??" John immediately thought of this possibility; since the Subduing Item attracted Black Darkness creatures, why would they be sent through dangerous territory?

"Possibly, but we need to get out of this predicament first." Hand over the Subduing Item? Looking around at the menacing Black Darkness creatures, they knew that even if they handed it over, they wouldn’t have it easy.

"Chang Qing, leave the Night Devil to you," Raymond said, the only person in the team who could currently fight the Night Devil was Zheng Yichen.

"Leave it to me," Zheng Yichen eyed the Night Devil, eager to test himself, and even took out a small box with some paste-like medicine inside, similar to sword grease. This substance was made from materials derived from vampires, which when applied to a weapon, would cause the target to bleed incessantly.

Zheng Yichen used it and then immediately distributed it to the others.

The Night Devil was intelligent, and Zheng Yichen didn’t explain the use of the substance, with the others tacitly refraining from asking what it was.

Zheng Yichen stared at the Night Devil, its appearance akin to a demon, and flourished his fishing rod.

"You’re courting death!" The Night Devil saw Zheng Yichen’s action as a blatant challenge—how dare a mere human challenge him!

As the Night Devil spread its wings, Zheng Yichen swung his fishing rod, and the months of growth allowed him to gain new insights into using the long spear. He wasn’t like a martial arts master who could unleash various impressive techniques, but he had developed his own way of using it.

His use of the long spear wasn’t just about wielding the weapon as a spear, but more like a stick, occasionally delivering extremely sharp thrusts in his attacks.

The Night Devil’s burly arm grabbed the fishing rod in Zheng Yichen’s hand; the tremendous force halted Zheng Yichen’s charge, and the Night Devil was also taken aback by Zheng Yichen’s strength.

In that brief moment of surprise, Zheng Yichen had already pulled out his hand cannon and fired a shot at the Night Devil.

"Roar—" Watching the small grenade fly towards him, the Night Devil swatted it away with a slap of his palm, and Zheng Yichen shook his head, quickly retreating. This creature had intelligence but no culture...

The explosion engulfed the Night Devil, and an angry roar came from within; the Night Devil’s physique was stronger than a werewolf’s, but even so, one of its hands was blasted into a bloody, flesh-exposed mess, with ghastly bones visible in the wound.

Modern weaponry is not to be underestimated; even the highly resilient, carbon-based body of a Night Devil couldn’t withstand it.

After landing a successful hit, Zheng Yichen put away his hand cannon. The first shot worked because he exploited the creature’s lack of culture; a second shot at close range was the only way it would be effective again.

With blood-red eyes, the Night Devil let out an enraged roar and charged at Zheng Yichen, who, without a word, immediately ran towards another direction, stabbing backward with his fishing rod.

The furious Night Devil hadn’t completely lost its mind; with its intact hand, it grabbed the fishing rod Zheng Yichen had thrust out, trying to pull him back. Zheng Yichen was strong, and although the Night Devil grabbed him, it couldn’t yank him back.

The fishing rod made a creaking noise under the strain of their tug-of-war and began to bend. The fishing rod that had followed Zheng Yichen for several months was completely wrecked in this battle.

Seeing this, he let go of the fishing rod and pulled out the horn of a one-horned mule, wrapped in cloth. As the cloth unraveled, a dark red tongue wrapped around the horn was exposed.

Hiss—

A slightly ear-piercing sound rang out, and the psychic attack characteristic of the one-horned mule affected the Night Devil, disrupting its rage for a moment. In that brief pause, Zheng Yichen had already reached the Night Devil and pierced its chest with the horn.

Penetrating its lung, the Night Devil, unable to completely evade the attack, let out an enraged roar and swung its almost crippled arm at Zheng Yichen.

A sharp sword sliced through the bulging, nearly disabled arm, and the cut limb sizzled as if scorched.

Seeing the sword in Zheng Yichen’s hand, the Night Devil’s furious eyes flashed with astonishment. This sword bore the aura of Hell; no, how could a human wield such a weapon?

"Why?!" The Night Devil was greatly shocked to see the pale green flames ignite on the Sword of Hell in Zheng Yichen’s hand.

"I don’t know either."

The blade, burning with Hellfire, slid across the Night Devil’s chest. The pale green flames vanished rapidly, and with them, the life of the Night Devil. Zheng Yichen sheathed the weapon back into the scabbard made from the Tree of Death and pressed his hand on the horn still lodged in the Night Devil’s chest. A black substance covered it, drawing out the Night Devil’s blood.

The Night Devil was another Extraordinary creature he had dealt with, and Zheng Yichen wondered what sort of enhancement he would receive from absorbing its blood.

Firstly, he felt the energy he had used wielding the Sword of Hell being replenished, and then the dim surroundings became slightly brighter. The physical enhancement... this feedback would take time and was the most basic kind of benefit to expect.

It was a pity he had teammates; he couldn’t drain this Night Devil completely.
