"I’ve found a pretty good commission," Raymond said to Zheng Yichen and the others at the tavern. This time, it wasn’t just about drinking together—it was a gathering of their whole Hunter-Demon squad.

"What kind of commission?" John asked lazily. Since deciding to retire, he had become quite slack, still keeping up with daily training but without the focus from before. The others were more or less the same.

After making that decision, the determination they had to earn money over the past few months had dissipated. After all, they had already made enough money. If the commission Raymond was talking about was difficult to complete, they might not take it.

"An escort mission."

"Hm? Such a commission doesn’t have much to do with us, does it?" John was now curious. They were Hunter-Demons, after all, not your typical escorts. Employers wouldn’t come to them for such tasks, and even if the Hunter-Demons approached them, the clients wouldn’t choose them.

"What about the pay?" asked John, who was planning to retire. Without this commission, he would officially retire in a couple of days.

"Higher than what we earned from dealing with the vampire nest," Raymond replied.

John was tempted. The mission against the vampire nest had been the most profitable in the past few months, despite the cost of two teammates’ lives. After all, wasn’t this line of work about trading lives for money?

The pay for this escort mission was so high that, although it would take up a lot of time, it would be worth it as long as they completed the task within the limited timeframe.

Passing through dangerous areas was hardly an issue. There was no requirement to eliminate those Black Darkness creatures; they could simply avoid or deter them to evade fighting. With some luck, there might not even be a battle.

"This... I consent," another Hunter-Demon spoke up before John could respond. "Might as well make it the last perfect action before retirement."

"I have no objections, just perfect for retiring completely after this time," John added, thinking that finishing with this commission would make for a decent end to his career, the primary allure being the generous pay.

"Where are we heading?" Zheng Yichen, however, seemed somewhat hesitant. The nature of the escort mission conflicted with his thoughts, as braving dangerous areas didn’t necessarily mean fighting the extraordinary creatures.

"A chapel. The employer requires us to deliver a Subduing Item there," Raymond said.

Zheng Yichen was even more perplexed: "A chapel of the church? Don’t we have cathedrals here as well?"

The city they lived in was a metropolis, equivalent to a place like New York on Earth. Why would a Subduing Item need to be delivered from here to another city’s chapel? Was it a slight against the local cathedrals? Moreover, Raymond’s commission didn’t sound related to the church, probably.

"No, it’s a place called the Dusk Cathedral," Raymond shook his head. "Where we deliver it isn’t our concern. If it were meant for the local cathedral, there wouldn’t be a commission like this."

"The Dusk Cathedral? I’ve never heard of that place," John was puzzled too. The church’s tolerance for heretics and other beliefs wasn’t just poor, it was utterly intolerant. Now, Raymond mentioned a place that clearly had no connection with the church, inviting curiosity.

It sounded like an inconspicuous place. John soon moved past his doubts, just as Raymond had said—if it weren’t meant for another location, there wouldn’t be such a promising commission.

Knowing the destination and being assured of the payment was enough.

"We’ll discuss the details at my house tomorrow; the employer is quite anxious," said Raymond, turning to Zheng Yichen, who still seemed ’hesitant,’ and advised, "This commission is a good one, and you’ve wanted to visit other cities, right? You can use this mission to make a detour there."

Raymond brought out a new map: "This is the map provided by the employer."

The map was similar to the one Raymond had shown earlier but with a higher precision and many more reference points marked on it. The specific location they were headed to was clearly labeled on the map.
