Chapter 69: Chapter 67 The One Shot to Death by a Gun
This was considered a regular mission, but if a solo Hunter-Demon came here, they wouldn’t be able to finish in a day or two. There were several ghouls, and a lone Hunter-Demon would have to find a way to lure them out; otherwise, it meant digging graves – a laborious task. If luck wasn’t on their side, they might inadvertently uncover all the ghouls at once.
If that happened, with their strength severely depleted, the mission would most likely go sideways. To play it safe, they could wait for an easy kill, but that would inevitably waste a great deal of time.
With multiple people working together, it was different. They could simply kick down doors and dig out those hidden ghouls, dealing with all of the problems in one day.
"What’s wrong with her?" When he returned to where he stayed, Zheng Yichen noticed something off about Katrina’s demeanor and asked Eileena with some concern. During this time, Katrina had consistently failed to give him any substantive responses, and they couldn’t keep staying at the inn forever.
He had found a suitable place to rent in the city, but unfortunately, after half a month, there was no significant progress in their relationship. His interactions with Eileena were mostly collaborative, while Katrina had been hesitant ever since the day he had a serious talk with her.
She was not even twenty years old, and even though people matured early in this world, when faced with some unknown future, her resolve was not as strong as Eileena’s.
Before that, she had been hesitant, but she had not been like she was now.
"While you were clearing the ghouls, a police officer found her."
"And then?"
"That officer brought news of trouble at her home."
"?? Such a coincidence?" Zheng Yichen’s eyes widened: "What exactly happened?"
"Her stepmother is a witch, the witch who controls the Headless Knight."
"The Headless Knight was killed by me."
Eileena glanced at Zheng Yichen, she certainly knew that the Headless Knight had been killed by him, but that witch didn’t know, did she? When the officer went to investigate a murder case, that witch made a slip that allowed the officer to uncover some clues.
"Then my sister... the witch, worried that the officer would return and find someone from the church, tried to eliminate him, in an ’accident,’ but she failed."
"Your sister?"
Eileena nodded: "Yes, my sister."
"What happened to your sister now?"
"She’s dead, shot..."
Zheng Yichen could not see much sorrow in her face; was this the attitude of a witch toward others? So, he asked, "You two weren’t close?"
The witch shook her head: "As children, we lived and relied on each other. After we grew up, she and I went our separate ways. I didn’t want to mix too much into human society, but she had other plans. We kept in touch, but I had no idea what she was involved in until that officer brought the news."
"Her father’s dead too?" Zheng Yichen asked in a lowered voice: "And how did that officer find her?"
"Her parents aren’t dead, just their health affected by the Evil Spirit. That officer didn’t find Katrina directly; he encountered her horse."
Katrina had come out riding a horse, a well-cared-for white horse, at that.
"What did your sister have to gain by stirring up so much trouble?" Zheng Yichen clicked his tongue; he went to that town to kill the Headless Knight and hadn’t thought about investigating any murder cases. But now it seemed he’d inadvertently triggered a side quest and missed the main plot.
Well, normal people can’t deal with the Headless Knight either.
"For the sake of her inheritance," Eileena shook her head, "If my sister had known you were from that anomaly and that you were going to seek it out, she probably wouldn’t have done all those things."
"That’s not necessarily true. By the time I got to the town, quite a few people had already died."
Eileena sighed, her expression forlorn, "There’s no point in talking about this now, I have no thoughts of revenge."
She had never imagined her sister could do such things, and even after finding out, she wouldn’t have done much except to stay away, cutting off all contact with her sister in the future.
Zheng Yichen approached Katrina, "Let’s go back, your father needs your help now."
The girl, hesitating and conflicted, needed just a push. With Zheng Yichen saying this, Katrina nodded, "Can you come back with me?"
"Of course I can."
At Sleepy Hollow Town, Zheng Yichen, back in town, was using a telescope to watch some people’s movements within. Katrina took the telescope from Zheng Yichen for a glance and her expression tensed, "They are clerics from the church, it must be the witch’s matter that has drawn them here."
The church was very keen on dealing with witches, even though her step-mother, the witch, had died; the church’s people would still carry out their investigation here. She was somewhat relieved that when she had left, she had taken some of her mother’s belongings with her, including things related to witchcraft magic.
The church’s investigation probably wouldn’t turn up anything extra, and until then she really didn’t know her step-mother was a witch.
She looked to Zheng Yichen for help, "What should we do?"
She had chosen to return for her father’s sake, intending to use Blessing Magic to heal the effects on him from the witch using the Headless Knight’s skull to summon the undead that had harmed him. Though it wasn’t lethal, the harm from the undead had a serious erosive effect on people.
Young people might recover after a while, but her father, being older, needed to have the undead’s possession effect removed or his health would deteriorate further.
But with the church’s clerics in town, she would be easily found out if she used Blessing Magic.
"Let’s go back and see first. If things go south, I’ll take you and run," Zheng Yichen checked his firearms and weapons, then said to Katrina, as her father’s situation needed to be dealt with or it could turn dire.
After Zheng Yichen said this, Katrina immediately nodded. Zheng Yichen found a suitable place to bury the Sword of Hell, planning to retrieve it later when they left. Had he known, he wouldn’t have brought the damned thing.
He also packed up the bullets for the firearms separately, just in case.
"Let’s go." At the entrance to the town, the townspeople looked at Katrina in surprise as she returned. The news of Katrina’s secret departure had already spread throughout the town, yet they did not expect her to come back at this time.
"Before I left the town to chase after you, my step-mom was very supportive of me doing so. I should have realized then that something was wrong with her," Katrina said guiltily, as she was able to prepare her things and even ride out thanks to her step-mom’s help.
Otherwise, with her father’s people watching her at home, she would have had no chance to run away.
"A Hunter-Demon? And Fantaso’s daughter? Your timing in returning is too coincidental," one of the church’s clerics stopped them.
Katrina quickly replied, "It was Officer Krayon who passed on the message."
"Krayon?" the cleric from the church frowned slightly, not questioning further. For now, only Krayon, who had left, could have transmitted the message from there.
