Chapter 649: Chapter 484 Not Falling Behind_1
The Dusk Cathedral in this world, compared to the one in Hazy City, looked even more ancient, devoid of modern devices. But there were things that could replace the modern appliances; the light bulbs, for instance, seemed to be some kind of magic tool and didn’t appear particularly expensive—just like regular household bulbs.
There was even a magic screen visible here, not a tech-display but a crystal one, broadcasting some news.
An... interesting style, isn’t it?
The people here were different from those in the world of magic Zheng Yichen had in mind. Although their style of dress was similar, they were not praying. Instead, they rested here with a leisurely attitude, some holding in their hands devices that looked similar to smartphones.
"How do you like it?" Zheng Yichen quickly accepted the scene before him.
"It feels... quite normal." After pondering for a moment, Ahn Ke said, "Some literary works have problematic expressions about certain aspects of the world of magic. Magic is a science besides technology, and as a science, it can develop a corresponding complete system."
A world of magic with a strong upper limit could not have no progress at the lower end, making everything seem variously backward, unless the upper limit of magic power in this world wasn’t that high.
This was similar to technology. If a world with a low ceiling in tech power had firearms, those weapons would be tightly controlled by the upper classes, and common people would have no chance to access them. But if that world had a high ceiling and had developed airplanes and spacecraft, then it would be easy for ordinary people to come into contact with firearms.
Even with relevant laws in place, lighters and cars would still be readily accessible, right?
The ceiling can drive the baseline; even if there’s a huge gap between the upper and lower limits, once the very base is lifted, the variety of things accessible to people at the lower end becomes quite substantial.
In this world, reliant on the power of magic for development, it is entirely normal to have modern features similar to a technological world. That public screen, the phone-like devices in people’s hands here, all indicate that the baseline of this world can’t be too low.
"My native world isn’t too bad, right?" Fire Dragon Klakauska said with a grin.
"Some of it is beyond imagination. Since your world is like this, why were you so reckless when you first came to Hazy City?" Zheng Yichen asked curiously.
The ordinary people in this world could use some magical devices, so it seemed plausible that weapon development in this world would be even better.
"Hmph, my world’s literary development doesn’t revolve much around technology. Even in imagination, there’s a big gap. Most of it is based on magic. After I went to your world, the first thing I noticed was how scarce the elemental power was there. With such scarcity, what kind of powerful weapons can develop?"
It turned out to be a difference in perception that had led Fire Dragon to make an incorrect judgment in the past. Zheng Yichen nodded in understanding, "Let’s find a place to stay first. Ahn Ke seems a bit unwell; what do you think?"
Zheng Yichen told the Fire Dragon about Ahn Ke’s condition, and Klakauska answered without a second thought, "That’s easy to explain. It’s typical of people with no elemental affinity and no exposure to magic who suddenly develop an affinity for the Elements. Elemental power is pervasive, and with the emergence of this talent for affinity, it feels like being immersed in deep water.
If one is born with a strong elemental affinity, it will adapt with the individual’s growth. If it’s acquired suddenly, whether one adapts depends on the individual. The two witches by your side who have been exposed to magic won’t experience this—"
Klakauska glanced at Ahn Ke and continued, "She definitely has not studied magic. She may have had elemental affinity in her own world, but the environment in Hazy City was too low for her to notice any abnormalities. Yet, upon arriving in an environment rich in elements, she feels unwell almost immediately.
Um... You could enroll in a Magic Academy to study. Generally, those who feel discomfort like this have a higher elemental affinity among spellcasters."
"No time. I just want to know how long this condition will last?" Ahn Ke said bluntly. She wasn’t very interested in magic, even after understanding her situation.
"If you don’t study magic, probably between a month and a year, depending on how strong the elemental affinity is. The stronger it is, the slower the adaptation. If you study magic, then you can significantly shorten this period."
"...Then I’ll learn the simplest thing." Ahn Ke promptly changed her mind, valuing efficiency. Waiting around was out of the question, regardless of whether it was for a month or a year. She didn’t care for talent; the wait was just too long.
"That’s fine. I’ll find you an introductory method for a mage’s meditation later."
In his own world, the Fire Dragon became very active, so cheerful that he attracted the attention of several spellcasters at the Dusk Cathedral.
"What are you looking at!" Fire Dragon glared fiercely at the spellcasters, and a subtle display of Dragon’s Might caused their expressions to change instantly, as they swiftly averted their gaze. Encounters with adult dragons were rare but not unheard of. They were looking at Fire Dragon and Zheng Yichen because the group’s style of dress was rather unusual.
After sensing the might of Klakauska, any excess speculation was immediately dropped. It was mostly likely just some bored dragons who’d transformed into humans and were strolling around idly, interested in everything because it all seemed novel.
"Let’s go," Klakauska said in a good mood, striding away from the area without giving much thought to the mages they had encountered just now.
First of all, he was not the sort of malevolent dragon that needed to be sought out by dragon slayers. It was rare but not unacceptable for dragons to be spotted in cities. As long as intelligent beings could communicate, there would invariably be interactions among them.
In the past, when he happened to pass by areas near cities, there would be daring traders who sought him out, attempting to trade with him for goods difficult to obtain on the continent, like certain specialties from the Dragon Tribe.
Strange and exotic clothes? There was even less need to care about that. The clothes they wore weren’t something to fuss over. The development in the local world was going well; its productivity was not inferior to that of Hazy City at all, with a plethora of clothing styles to boot.
The fire dragon expressed that he didn’t use to wear clothes in the past and that what he was wearing now wasn’t anything noteworthy—
"We should still buy some normal clothes."
"The clothes you’re wearing are quite normal, it’s actually your bike that’s the most unusual," said the fire dragon, glancing over Zheng Yichen’s motorcycle. It looked quite cool, probably because he played games in Hazy City too much.
Playing human games had, to some extent, shifted his aesthetic taste.
There are vehicles in his world, and car dealerships as well, but the vehicles there are styled in accordance with that world and utterly different from a technological aesthetic.
"I think if people saw this bike, the most that would happen is some would try to imitate it."
"Right, so it’s the same with clothes, huh."
That being said, Zheng Yichen still took Katrina and the others to buy new clothes to wear, mainly to experience the alien world’s culture and try out the local fashion.
After changing into local attire in the streets, Zheng Yichen asked Klakauska, who was by his side, "Could we run into those overbearing nobles here? The kind who would see my bike, think it’s cool, and want to take it by force."
The fire dragon laughed heartily: "Nobles aren’t that foolish, ah, well, there might be the occasional idiot, but anyone can see your bike is no ordinary machine. Even the foolish ones would give it some serious thought. Not every rich kid born with a silver spoon is an idiot, right?
Those idiots usually have elder members of their family acting as an external brain to prevent them from courting disaster and accidentally burning themselves and their entire family with it. There were many such incidents in the past, and I’ve heard quite a few of them.
Some of these idiots have troubled incognito powerful spellcasters, with the most famous incident happening decades ago. A fool bothered the renowned ’Black Star,’ offended him deeply, and as a result, the noble family with a decent background got carved up by their own nation and offered as a sacrifice to the heavens."
At this point, the fire dragon chuckled mischievously: "Basically, that fool was shouting about annihilating ’Black Star’s entire family, which was then met with an equal response from Black Star himself."
Ahn Ke couldn’t help shaking his head upon hearing this: "That’s a rare occurrence."
The fire dragon laughed merrily: "Indeed, it’s a rare occurrence, but the problem is that there’s always someone unlucky enough to hit that rare chance. I even watched the whole process of Black Star taking action back then. That place is still a pit to this day. Want to go take a look later? Honestly, if that event happened in the world of Hazy City, it would now be a hotspot for social media influencers to check in."
The fire dragon’s words were too realistic as Zheng Yichen looked around at the surrounding buildings: "Let’s hurry and find accommodation. Aren’t you going to contact anyone you know?"
"?" The fire dragon looked at Zheng Yichen somewhat perplexed: "It hasn’t even been a year since I left. Why would I need to make contact after such a short time? By human time, the duration I’ve been away would probably be just one week in the Dragon Tribe."
Is living long really such a big deal? It certainly is.
This city harbors the Dusk Cathedral, and they had no plans to find accommodations elsewhere. After all, the upper limits of this world were high, with the existence of divine beings, and according to the fire dragon, there were plenty of demigods.
Going elsewhere would be somewhat unsafe, well, unsafe for Katrina and the others. Staying here was more secure, and in case of any accidents, taking them to the Dusk Cathedral would leave them with no worries.
The last task was to find a place close to the Dusk Cathedral... but there were no vacancies nearby, and those who lived here were rich or noble. This world had an extra understanding of Dusk.
