Chapter 570: Chapter 440 Again, a Tree_1
"Okay, how did this thing come to exist in this world?" Is this tree really something from this world?
The attire on those who hung from the tree resembled that of people from the medieval period. As Zheng Yichen halted, a dense swarm of flying monsters approached him, and those ’fruits’ hanging from the tree began to wriggle, soon giving rise to new monsters breaking out of their shells.
Some of the monsters were capable of flight while others climbed down the enormous tree.
Zheng Yichen narrowed his eyes slightly, enhancing his thermal vision, and spotted a highly concentrated heat source at the center of the giant tree. This thermal vision gave him a unique advantage when dealing with massive monsters, allowing him to precisely identify the enemies’ weak points.
Such weak points were indicated by intensely concentrated heat sources; even if not true vulnerabilities, they were critical areas.
Just like in humans, whom Zheng Yichen observed, the distribution of heat sources was uneven, with stronger heat reactions around the heart and brain.
This immense tree held a highly concentrated heat source at its core—wasn’t that the target he was looking for?
Apart from that, Zheng Yichen also noticed several normal heat signatures. Divided into small squads, they hid nearby, employing some technique to conceal their tracks, invisible even to the tree. However, Zheng Yichen’s eyes had the ability to see through illusions in addition to sensing heat, rendering their concealment methods ineffective.
Even the concealment of an Arriver had failed to deceive him, let alone these individuals. It seemed they had been planning an ambush on the tree, but with Zheng Yichen’s arrival, there was no need for them to take action.
With one arm wrapped around Katrina’s waist, Zheng Yichen didn’t even use Burst Mode. Upon his black spear a blood-colored dragon shadow formed, swirling with fierce winds as it propelled Zheng Yichen towards the giant tree.
During flight, the blood dragon’s shadow grew larger. Its head formed at the tip of the long spear, and a multitude of monsters perished under its assault.
In the midst of the teams hiding their presence, an elderly man wearing a magic hat watched everything in stunned silence, "Gods, is our world truly coming to an end?"
"It seems like he’s dealing with the Demon Tree, right?" a young man behind the elder couldn’t help but ask.
The elder’s expression darkened as he shook his head, "That power is too bloody. Moreover, a vast number of souls are under his control. He is an existence even more terrifying than the Demon Tree!!"
Boom—
The surface of the giant tree was torn open by the blood dragon, leaving a vast cavity. Accompanied by the long spear thrown by Zheng Yichen, the blood-colored dragon shadow charged into the tree’s concentrated heat source area. The Demon Tree’s bark was as tough as steel, but Zheng Yichen’s attack carried with it spatial distortion, and the battle dragon conjured from the Sky Dragon Spear Technique possessed immense destructive force.
To the tree’s formidable strength, which was like paper, the blood dragon burst through effortlessly, and Zheng Yichen’s right leg was enveloped in a blood-colored energy film. He kicked the slowing black spear, instantly augmenting its speed and destructive power, and the blood dragon completely pierced through the Demon Tree.
Also penetrated was the area of concentrated heat sources within the tree, with copious amounts of blood surging forth. Undoubtedly, this was a living tree.
Zheng Yichen certainly would not let the spurting blood go to waste. Stirring it with his black spear, he absorbed all the gathered blood. The volume of the Essence of Life in his fingers expanded, its presence gradually extending over his entire palm.
There was a loud cracking sound as the entire tree withered, the noise erupting from the collapse triggered by the tree’s inability to support its own weight. Zheng Yichen, holding Katrina tightly, quickly burst forth from the tree. The young lady showed an uncontrollable excitement on her face.
She tightly wrapped her arms around Zheng Yichen’s neck, giving him a firm kiss on the cheek, "You are my most splendid Knight!"
The feelings she had shared with Zheng Yichen on casual strolls felt like an everyday occurrence, but now she experienced the thrill of adventure with her beloved, gaining a new awareness of Zheng Yichen’s might—an immense power akin to that of a god.
The vast tree collapsed, and the fallen wood took on a soft state, acting as a cushion for the tree canopy and preserving most of the ’fruits.’ Some of the fruits burst, leaking unfinished ’gelatin,’ whereas others still writhed, extending hands devoid of skin, just ghastly muscle and blood vessels.
The individuals cried out in agony, and Katrina’s expression turned to one of pity.
"I don’t think I know how to heal... no, wait, I can," Zheng Yichen muttered as he flipped through his skill list. Pointing the black spear to the sky, a sphere of light emerged. The Light type abilities included healing, and some of the Light type creatures he had taken down also possessed healing powers.
It was an ability he seldom used; as someone innately endowed with regenerative power, learning healing abilities was superfluous—the energy consumed by healing abilities didn’t even match the speed of natural recovery.
Now with an opportunity to use them elsewhere, Zheng Yichen gave it a try and found the effect quite remarkable.
The skinless people, under the illumination of the light, had their missing skin miraculously reappear. Although the process seemed to cause them even more pain, it was still much better than dying from the lack of protective skin.
"Sage Medaya, this seems a bit different from what you mentioned," the young swordsman remarked as he observed the area covered by the light and couldn’t help but turn to the old man holding a magic wand.
After a moment of silence, the elder coughed lightly and said, "After all, I have lived for over three hundred years; it is perfectly normal for me to occasionally misread some things."
The old man looked helplessly at the team behind him and others hiding in different locations. These teams, like his, were all hero squads, comprised of heroes from different countries across the continent, specially gathered to combat the Demon Tree.
Although hero squads could take on thousands of enemies, it was uncertain whether they could bring down this mysterious Demon Tree. The continent’s most powerful soothsayer had paid with his life to trace back to the ’root’ of the Demon Tree.
This entity originated from an Alien Phenomenon. They had to deal with the Demon Tree within two years, or else the entire world would be annihilated.
Some hoped to find a way to deal with the Demon Tree through the Alien Phenomenon, but such phenomena were elusive. As the time prophesied drew near, the hero squads from the various countries united, intending to make a last stand and destroy the Demon Tree.
As for the army? The army had already been decimated...
But before they could take action, a mysterious and powerful entity appeared, cutting down the Demon Tree with unstoppable force. Afterwards, it exhibited a warm, healing power that treated the survivors who had suffered but were still alive.
When the light finally dispersed, the individual who had resolved the Demon Tree issue had vanished without a trace.
"... We have witnessed the birth of a new legend," Sage Medaya said. His expression was not quite relaxed, though, as the Demon Tree had been taken care of, yet the underlying threat may not have been eradicated. The Demon Tree had come from an Alien Phenomenon, and as long as such phenomena continued to appear on the continent, the crisis could still arise.
He planned to establish an Alien Phenomenon Research Society in the future.
"... Damn it! Why would a Proxy Agent appear at this time?!" In a concealed area, several Boundary Breakers cursed frantically with a torrent of vile language. They had come to this world through the Alien Phenomenon.
They had bypassed the unique methods of the Great World, effectively evading some of the Dusk’s detection measures, which allowed their actions to be more relaxed. Like the Demon Tree, had it invaded a world normally, it would have attracted the attention of the Dusk long before reaching this magnitude.
However, the situation was different with a tree that arrived via an Alien Phenomenon. By the time it had grown to this extent, the appearance of a Dusk Hunter was no longer a significant threat.
If they were lucky, the Dusk would only discover them in the final stages, and by then, due to their extensive preparations, the Proxy Agents might not catch up in time. In such cases, the Dusk typically wouldn’t bother sending a Proxy Agent.
At most, some meddlesome Dusk mercenaries would show up. The Proxy Agents arranged by the Dusk were usually capable of resolving the issue. But if the problem was beyond resolution, the Dusk wouldn’t intentionally waste a Proxy Agent’s efforts.
But what was the deal with this suddenly appearing Proxy Agent? The Boundary Breakers struggled to accept how a supposedly secured outcome was inexplicably ruined by a Proxy Agent, yet they didn’t dare trouble themselves with seeking out this Proxy Agent.
"Damn... let’s report back, and make the report detailed. It’s not our fault," one of the Boundary Breakers said, still somewhat frenzied, "I hope our superiors are understanding."
In their anxious wait, the instructions they received were simply to "retreat," without any mention of punishment.
"What... what’s going on? Why has the upper echelon suddenly become so lenient?"
The Boundary Breaker who made the report was also stunned, "It seems to be related to this Proxy Agent’s identity. The individual is marked as a special Proxy Agent by the Great World... However, the superiors want us to try and investigate before we leave, to see if we can find out where the agent came from, to make sure whether or not this Proxy Agent belongs to this world."
"Is there a need to investigate that in this world? If that Proxy Agent truly belonged here, they wouldn’t have let that tree grow to its present size. We should investigate from other places," another Boundary Breaker suggested. The top brass asked for an investigation, but they were not about to slack off.
They had fortunately avoided what could have been a severe punishment. How could they dare to slack off now with what was to come? Best to investigate quickly.
At this very moment, Zheng Yichen was on his way back with Katrina. The Alien Phenomenon existed only for a limited time, and after a certain period, even if he were to precisely time his actions, Zheng Yichen had no intention of making a grand appearance. Having emitted the light, he immediately escorted the girl away.
As for a reward? The Life Force that the tree had provided him was the best compensation he could have received. This trip was well worth it.
