Chapter 506: Chapter 388 Desolation_1

"Hmm, Base No. 1 is out of the way, so let’s head to Base No. 9, though it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference." Zheng Yichen looked at the information on the map; Base No. 1 was in the opposite direction of his destination, and the other bases weren’t on his way either, but Base No. 9 shouldn’t be a problem.

"Navigation adjusted."

Back on the road, Zheng Yichen looked at some of the wreckage left along the way. The debris contained massive creatures and some combat weapons. Since they were relatively close, he approached and tapped on the corpse of a gigantic creature that lay on the ground, which felt hard to the touch.

The carcass had died from a large gash that cut open its belly. Through the gaping wound, one could still see some undigested remains, including fragments of battle armor. It was a relic of a great battle.

However, as the environmental imbalance took its toll, the site had lost much of its value for investigation, and Zheng Yichen moved on.

Nothing but Overgrown Wilderness lay in his path, dead trees, withered grasslands; the entire world lacked any hint of greenery.

Upon encountering a river, Zheng Yichen reached into the water to feel it – the touch was bone-chillingly cold, and the river showed no signs of life.

Passing through a small town, the corpses still maintained their final postures of death. From their expressions, it was evident they had suffered greatly in their last moments.

Continuing forward, he found corpses of indigenous warriors, some dismembered, some intact. Those unmarked by wounds were checked by Zheng Yichen, who confirmed they had ’frozen to death,’ victims of the vacuum created by the environmental imbalance.

What struck Zheng Yichen most was a destroyed Firmament city. The massive Firmament Wheel had broken and was slanting into the Earth, with the city below completely devastated. The area was riddled with signs of assault, and the Firmament Wheel seemed to still be functioning to some degree, with dense specks circling around it.

Zheng Yichen’s vision was excellent, and he could see what those specks were – beyond building debris, most of the dots were severed limbs and various corpses.

He even saw the surface of the damaged Firmament Wheel unfolding its cannons slowly, aiming at his location...

"Threat of plasma cannon attack detected, evasive action recommended." Lilith immediately issued a warning.

The next instant the attacks arrived all at once. Their velocity was extreme, and since they were released by the Firmament, they had a certain resistance to the environmental imbalance, hence their force remained largely unabated.

The assault on the already ravaged land made it even worse.

A shadow darted out from the explosion, shimmering light flashing around it, but it brought no direct harm to Zheng Yichen. The impact and other forms of attack had been blocked by the upgraded motorcycle’s multi-layered protection.

Spatial distortion played the largest role, as the distorted space around him offered strong resistance to the shock waves from the explosions, deflecting them.

Zheng Yichen adjusted his cat spirit cloak, dispersing the membrane created by Burst Mode, and sped up his departure from the area, tiny twitches in the corner of his eyes. The Firmament Wheel’s attack posed no direct threat, but he did not want to be targeted for bombardment.

Such a threat from a damaged Firmament, and an intact Firmament Wheel... tsk tsk. The ’Firmament’ in this world wasn’t rejecting his approach out of spite; considering its destructive power, should the Firmament Wheel lose control, it wouldn’t kill Zheng Yichen, but the city beneath the Firmament would surely suffer greatly, as just the splash damage from the impact could bring it to collapse.

As Zheng Yichen moved away from the damaged Firmament Wheel, it continued to unleash numerous additional attacks, including the ultra-powerful electromagnetic railgun strikes.

There were also other targeted attacks, but with enough data on Firmament weaponry, he was able to get prior warnings. Even so, Zheng Yichen felt the pressure.

The extreme environments of this world allowed him to ignore some of the attacks, but ignoring them didn’t mean there was no cost involved, as some weapons were just too fast.

"I just don’t know if these attacks are indiscriminate or specific. The Firmament Wheels are networked, aren’t they? My identity should have been exposed..." Zheng Yichen withdrew his eyes from the barely visible Firmament Wheel wreckage in the distance, realising he really shouldn’t get close to a Firmament Wheel.

Better to head to those bases that have lost their network and check them out, scavenge for some powerful weapons, like the new battle saber he’d acquired. According to the information provided by Wise Dragon, bases numbered within ten possessed the kind that could slice through electromagnetic cannon shells, provided of course the cutting force field attached to the weapon was activated.

Otherwise, it might be time to see if brute force could work a miracle.

Unfortunately, this weapon didn’t support the use of his Inner Strength, nor could it be powered by the lightning brought about by his Elements manipulation ability. It wasn’t that it couldn’t convert electricity, but the weapon came with its own encryption. It couldn’t simply be forced to operate by overloading it with current.

As for Inner Strength, it could only be endowed upon the weapon, which might then conflict with the weapon’s deployed cutting force field.

There were also other power systems in this world. Wise Dragon No. 211 was not just a plain AI; it was a fusion of technology and soul. The Wise Dragon that Zheng Yichen saw was akin to a soul entity, not just a mere projection.

This world also possessed powers akin to magic, and martial arts were categorized as combat skills. The powerful could even attempt to burst a mountain with a single punch, or use other special attacks to annihilate targets.

The existence of humanoid weather controllers was not rare in this world. However, environmental imbalance made it impossible for these people to exert their corresponding combat power, and even appearing outside of the Firmament would see them rapidly drained.

Even those who were physically robust couldn’t resist the draining of ’heat’.

It was a world where individual combat strength and technological power developed in parallel, and there was even stellar exploration. Yet, both the Devouring Faction and the Boundary Breaking Faction had their sights set on this main planet. A world can be large, but as Tia and Zheng Yichen explained, a vast world can indeed have extraterrestrial beings, but only one ’heart’.

"To think there’s not a single living soul, not even an enemy." Zheng Yichen looked up at the darkening sky and sighed lightly. This world wasn’t like a post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies, but its kind of apocalypse was even more deathly still. The night sky was exceptionally dark, the stars dim, and the moon was in a shattered state.

Perched on his shoulder, the projection of Lilith spoke, "Boss, that’s due to the Firmament Wheel exploding."

"Hmm? What do you mean?" Zheng Yichen asked. There was too much information in the data packet sent by Firmament No. 7, and it would take him a long time to review it himself. So after confirming there was nothing wrong with the data packet, Lilith scanned the information through a secure isolation mode.

"Multiple Firmament Wheels exploding would affect the stability of this world’s continents. Those Firmament Wheels that could not be disarmed and could only delay their self-destruction were moved to the far side of the moon. The moon shielded the aftermath of the wheel explosions and the extensive subsequent chain impacts."

Zheng Yichen, after looking through the information on the projection screen, couldn’t help but shake his head. That chain reaction wasn’t just a physical shock; it also included shocks akin to EMPs that would affect other Firmaments, which resulted in the natives losing control over their own Firmaments. Regaining control over certain things once lost was not easy.

A single Firmament Wheel explosion could be kept within controllable limits, but not multiple wheels. However, that crisis occurred only once, because there were no more Dusk mercenaries to provoke the Firmament Wheels into turmoil.

"Even the moon has had its share of misfortune." With that thought, Zheng Yichen withdrew his gaze and continued his lonely journey under the dim night sky.

Upon reaching Base No. 9, Zheng Yichen activated his thermal vision immediately. He could see through the mountainside some ’heat sources’ that lay hidden, as well as others that shouldn’t have been there.

An ambush?

Zheng Yichen frowned slightly and grasped the battle saber. Naturally, he wanted to test his new weapon, although its energy crystal was nearly depleted. However, the temporary enhancement built into the motorcycle’s weapon case could still have a minor effect on it.

Especially after the energy flowed into the nearly depleted built-in energy crystal; while it couldn’t restore the crystal to its initial state, a temporary enhancement was possible. An enhancement meant increased output, making the weapon more impressive.

As he approached the entrance normally, Zheng Yichen ordered Lilith to activate the projection camouflage. But the moment she turned it on, Lilith detected incoming energy scans. After promptly recording the type of energy upon Lilith’s alert, Zheng Yichen Burst into action. A blood-colored Qi membrane exploded from his body as he rushed to the closest abnormal heat source.

"You—," the person hiding in the mountain was directly sliced out by Zheng Yichen. As the battle saber cut through the mountain as easily as tofu, its cutting force field extended along with his attack. But the weapon’s built-in power source was too spent, introducing a sense of lag when the saber carved through the exposed ambusher’s body.

The ambusher’s protective gear flashed once before being cleaved apart, while the armor was cut as if it were paper, and copious amounts of blood spurted from the cuts. Zheng Yichen followed through with a cross cut, then rushed toward the next hidden heat source.

The second hidden person’s eyes widened, attempting to speak, but was cut off along with his counterattack by Zheng Yichen in one strike. The third, who had fled, watched in horror as Zheng Yichen chased him down; any attacks he launched shattered upon contacting the blood-colored Qi membrane surrounding Zheng Yichen.

The distance between the two closed quickly, and as Zheng Yichen neared, the other saw his face contorting fearfully—a minor spatial distortion caused by the cat spirit cloak, but in the eyes of the enemy, it looked terrifying.

"Don’t come any closer!!"
