Chapter 48: Chapter 46: Feeling Fake?_1
Zheng Yichen inspected the mended parts on his battle suit; there seemed to be no apparent issues on first glance, although the lost defensive capability could not be restored. But being able to wear it was enough.
Humming a tune lightly, Zheng Yichen prepared to go to sleep. In the night, he heard a faint noise and woke from his slumbers. A shadowy figure, who had been frozen by Zheng Yichen’s sudden rise, made a hasty escape out of the window without hesitation.
"What the hell, could it be a thief?" Zheng Yichen yawned as he watched the retreating figure, then closed the window and went back to bed. The person had already run away; what was the point in chasing after them?
Unfamiliar with life here, even if he was to chase, it was unlikely he would catch them. This time he slept with his gun under his pillow. Since he was in an unfamiliar place, should he encounter a thief, all it would take was one shot. And if the intruder wasn’t a thief, why wouldn’t they use the main entrance?
Early the next morning, an energized Zheng Yichen began to exercise. The persistent enhancement from the one-horned mule was nearly over. Strike while the iron was hot; exercising more during this period would bring about a higher natural increase.
During his workout, Zheng Yichen could distinctly feel certain issues. His efficiency during this enhancement period had dropped and did not feel as intense as when he trained in Hazy City.
Such environmental adjustment made Zheng Yichen somewhat uncomfortable, a sensation like knowing he could achieve a greater enhancement, but it was forcibly suppressed.
He knew he could still make greater progress.
As for the special power of environmental sensing, that was basically negligible. He didn’t have any skills like magic, and a bit of sensing power was useless. At best, he could preemptively detect some approaching abnormal creatures. In such a world, the tongue of the one-horned mule he carried was more formidable.
The hissing sound it emitted had a greater impact on the psyche. The single horn also had some subtle special effects. Through Zheng Yichen’s rudimentary special senses, he could feel an ’air flow’ on the horn, but as to whether there were other effects, he had no idea.
This clearly was also a change brought about by environmental adjustment, wherein objects with inherent special powers displayed or further exuded their contained power characteristics in a more open environment.
Zheng Yichen did not notice any changes in the anomalies within him, and the black spear did not exhibit any additional changes. The ’anomaly’ drawn from the Headless Knight was significantly diluted; one big gulp and only about one-tenth was substantial, the rest was all water.
Katrina’s family was wealthy in the small town. After Zheng Yichen finished his exercises and dressed, breakfast was already prepared: coffee, exquisite bread with eggs, and smoked meat—this standard of breakfast could only be considered average in Hazy City.
An ordinary person with a bit of effort could easily make such a meal, not even needing to waste much time. However, here, it seemed to be deemed a high-quality breakfast. Katrina and her parents were all present.
There weren’t many servants, after all, it was just the wealth of a small town, not that of the city families.
Katrina’s father was named Fantaso, and the middle-aged woman beside him, Katrina’s stepmother, was named Mary.
"Katrina told me you’ve already found the culprit behind the homicide? At tonight’s banquet, many would love to hear your story," said Fantaso, sipping his coffee.
What his daughter recounted was Zheng Yichen’s discovery of the Headless Knight. As for the existence of the Headless Knight... Fantaso was somewhat skeptical, not that he denied such beings could exist, but rather he didn’t believe they should appear here.
He also had books distributed by the church; as the wealthiest man in the town, it was impossible that he lacked anything the mayor had. Among the compendium of evil creatures was the Headless Knight, an existence that was an even greater blasphemy to life. Unlike ghouls and zombies which were still complete beings, the Headless Knight was something else.
The Headless Knight...
Although this type of evil creature lacked a head, it was far more advanced than most, and most importantly, the Headless Knight was an evil creature that returned from Hell. They possessed immortality, agile limbs, exquisite swordsmanship, and so on. How could such advanced evil creatures appear in such a remote place?
If it were some ghoul or zombie, then fine, I’d believe it; those things could appear anywhere, especially in places with a high death toll. But the Headless Knight is different. No matter how many ordinary people die, they don’t become Headless Knights.
It isn’t illogical for someone to believe that such beings were once knights in life who fell from grace and became such after death.
"When I was young, I too enjoyed telling stories to my peers that made myself seem brave and mighty."
Katrina’s expression became somewhat unnatural. She looked at her father eagerly, thinking this breakfast was going to be a simple affair, a chance for Zheng Yichen to get to know her family better. However, she never expected it to turn out this way.
How could Zheng Yichen’s encounter with the Headless Knight be just a story!
"But your daughter seems to like such stories very much."
Fantaso, who always maintained an elegant demeanor, couldn’t help twitching the corners of his mouth as his face stiffened. Yesterday, when his daughter had left home, it was early, and by the time she returned, it was nearly dark. Had he not arranged for someone to inquire, he would have exploded on the spot upon learning that his daughter hadn’t gone to some secretive place with Zheng Yichen but had simply been staring at a small square in the haystack in town.
His daughter getting involved with an outsider whose Hunter-Demon status was even questionable, and on his very first day in Hazy City, was sure to be a massive embarrassment for him.
Fantaso felt stifled by this entire conversation, wanting to say something more, but Zheng Yichen had already taken his smoked meat and bread and left.
"You stay home!" Fantaso’s voice grew stern as he saw Katrina wanting to follow. Zheng Yichen, on the other hand, simply returned to his room, grabbed his backpack, and left the place. After all, as a daughter in this household, she wasn’t the one calling the shots. Since Katrina’s father was so averse to him, there was no reason for him to stay.
He went to the mayor’s place. When the mayor heard that Zheng Yichen had encountered the Headless Knight, he too wore a disbelieving expression. His thoughts were similar to Fantaso’s: the Headless Knight was not an ordinary evil creature.
In this era, living knights were seen as the pinnacle of martial prowess, and the undead Headless Knights even more so. How could Zheng Yichen have possibly survived encountering a Headless Knight?
Considering the other was on horseback, could someone on two legs ever outrun someone on four? Even if he had somehow survived, how could he have come back completely unharmed? In their minds, the mere fact that Zheng Yichen claimed to have encountered a Headless Knight was hardly believable...
Even if he had said he encountered a ghoul with a penchant for gnawing on heads.
