Chapter 428: Chapter 337: The Hell of This World (Happy New Year’s Eve)_1
Creak, creak—
Listening to the somewhat creepy sound of something gnawing on the fishing line, Zheng Yichen lifted the fish he had caught, and upon inspecting this little creature, he felt that the normal fish in the river were under significant survival pressure. After trying a few more times, he felt that the map from Qi Xiangyun needed an update.
There were no normal fish here. He didn’t know whether Qi Family Town had any places cultivating fish species. Given the current situation, even if some of the normal species in this world managed to survive by luck, a considerable portion would be completely eliminated.
Ordinary species simply couldn’t compete with the creatures transformed by the alien demons in this world.
The Boundary Breaking Faction had really hurt people a lot.
After tasting the fish that came out of the fire and trying, Zheng Yichen had to admit that after losing their infectious mutating properties, these creatures indeed tasted much better than normal fish.
All he had to do was ignore their somewhat ferocious appearance.
After finishing the rather ordinary fishing, Zheng Yichen rubbed his fishing rod, hung the fish bones on it, and threw them into a ring at the tip of the rod. Before long, the rod became heavy.
A skeleton that had bitten onto the fish bones was hauled up. Once on the ground, the Skeleton soldier looked around ’bewilderedly’ and made a clacking noise with its jaw, then its ’gaze’ fell upon Zheng Yichen and it charged at him with its right arm transformed into a bone blade.
Zheng Yichen deflected the falling bone blade with a flick of his fishing rod. The Skeleton soldier, taking advantage of the motion, changed the trajectory of its blade attack to utilize a type of swordsmanship from this world.
Ah?
Surprised, Zheng Yichen didn’t immediately shatter the Skeleton soldier but continued for two more moves, discovering that its combat level was really not bad. Moreover, unlike the Skeleton soldiers he had encountered before, it didn’t have a flame inside its head.
This was a standard skeleton that wouldn’t move at all and appeared no different from a regular pile of bones.
Watching the swordsmanship displayed by the skeleton, Zheng Yichen disarmed its arm and discovered that it possessed a certain power that allowed misaligned joints to reset themselves. He buried the Skeleton soldier in the ground, leaving only its head exposed.
The ground, thoroughly soaked with water, completely restricted the Skeleton soldier’s mobility. He continued fishing, and Skeleton soldier after Skeleton soldier...
After casting his line several dozen times, Skeleton soldiers surrounded him like seedlings, giving Zheng Yichen the feeling of returning to Earth and playing a card-drawing mobile game.
A ten-pull and this is what I get?
But these Skeleton soldiers were indeed unique. There were those skilled in swordmanship, knife techniques, and spear techniques, and one with a bone bow that had moved away from Zheng Yichen to attempt a long-range attack. However, it didn’t even get the chance to attack before Zheng Yichen shot its head to pieces with his black spear.
Skeleton soldiers didn’t have a soul flame in their heads, but the head was still crucial—shattering it meant they couldn’t move anymore.
Looking at these Skeleton soldiers, Zheng Yichen pondered their potential uses. For example, they could be used for training beginners in martial arts? These things seemed much more useful than those automaton puppets, right?
With these thoughts in mind, he continued fishing.
Feeling the hand sensation of the fishing rod change, Zheng Yichen’s eyes lit up; he had a big catch.
With a strong pull on the fishing rod, the taut fishing line slackened, and then there was nothing.
"..." Fish lack sufficient intelligence, but that doesn’t mean other things caught on the line lack it. This time something seemed to have let go of the fishing line quite cleanly after finding it couldn’t out-wrestle him. Oh, it wasn’t just let go, Zheng Yichen noticed a severed finger on the fish hook.
Not a human finger. It shriveled rapidly into powder at the touch of the black spear.
"Asura Demon, huh? Those creatures are in the Hell of this world?" Surprised, Zheng Yichen reopened the Gate of Death and continued to cast his fishing rod. Watching the deathly aura emanating from the rod, he had a sudden idea. If he wrapped himself in this aura of death, could he make contact with the Hell of this world?
But whether he could come back after going to the Hell of this world was another matter. It should be possible, right?
The Gate of Death was obtained using the Tree of Death as a material, and that thing was originally a portal linking life and death.
A swath of grey aura enveloped Zheng Yichen’s hand, which he then extended into the Gate of Death. Ensuring that nothing abnormal happened after sticking his hand through and not feeling much coldness in his palm, he withdrew it, and it didn’t turn into dead flesh like a corpse.
Really effective, huh.
"How’s the energy monitoring?" Zheng Yichen asked, casting another line, as he inquired the projection of Lilith beside him.
"The Gate of Death is very stable, and while we can monitor information from the other side, our range is limited, and parts beyond that range are unobservable," Lilith answered.
On the other side of the Gate of Death, the energy monitoring radius extended forty meters, akin to a thin wall. Beyond that, everything was shrouded in darkness.
The projection couldn’t penetrate further, so there was no hope for additional information gathering: "Recommend connecting limited-range scouts."
"Let’s give it a try," Zheng Yichen said, pulling out a long connection cable from the storage compartment of his motorcycle, and winding it around the fishing rod a few times before wrapping the remainder around the fishing line. After casting the hook back into the black circle, he now saw a projection screen in front of him; Zheng Yichen glimpsed the World of Death of this realm for the first time.
It was a land littered with corpses, staggering bodies wandering atop it. Some corpses were relatively intact, others in varying states of decay, but a majority were like alien demons.
The walking dead shuffled along, some accidentally toppling into pools of blood on the Land of Death. Some never crawled out, while others emerged stronger...
Or turned into the kind of skeleton soldiers Zheng Yichen had fished out. Observing the proportion of these creatures, he noticed the skeletons outnumbered others. The blood pools were not clean either, with decayed flesh and blood floating on the surface.
The flesh, which clung dead to bodies, seemed to come to life in the pools, writhing and coalescing. After a while, Zheng Yichen saw an Asura Demon fishing alongside a pool.
"So this is the Hell of this world? It’s really not what I expected," Zheng Yichen marveled at the images recorded by the scout, having thought that this world’s Hell would have at least a few ox-headed and horse-faced guardians.
Perhaps a full eighteen levels of Hell, the ghost gates... It seems none of that exists here.
This area appeared to be an ’uninhabited zone,’ with only the Asura Demons seeming truly alive. However, observing them showed that even these demons were not faring well, with numerous injuries covering the 4-armed Asura Demon scavenging by the blood pool.
Some wounds were fresh, suggesting that ever since the Battle Maniac Asura disappeared, the Asura Demons had been having a tough time.
Before long, a robust corpse that wasn’t a skeleton approached, curiously eyeing the scout’s lens. It reached for the fishing line by the pool. At this moment, Zheng Yichen yanked the rod hard, tangling the line around the corpse and pulling it straight out.
To the astonishment of the nearby Asura Demon.
"Hiss—Roar!" The strong body, ripped from its environment, struggled to adapt outside of Hell. It roared at Zheng Yichen and lunged at him, only to be decapitated within ten seconds.
"This counts as a zombie, right?" Zheng Yichen knocked on the robust corpse’s head, finding it tough and unyielding, reminiscent of touching cured meat. During the brief encounter, he could feel how resilient the body was.
Continuing to change his fishing spots, he found the scenery largely the same in each. He concluded that the Hell of this world was truly vast, as the number of his ’plantings’ increased alongside him.
Skeletons were most common, followed by zombies and other undead creatures.
There were not only human-shaped undead but also animal forms, and some neither human nor animal — just masses of flesh and blood. An Asura Demon spiked into the ground informed Zheng Yichen that these were Corpse Demons.
Fearful creatures of Hell; encountering a 4-armed Asura Demon meant likely death, while only a 6-armed could possibly escape. However, Zheng Yichen quickly dispatched such a Corpse Demon.
It seemed they were the result of the dead infused with Supreme Demon’s blood, a substance too potent for ordinary beings, not to be considered a stroke of luck.
"Supreme Demon’s blood? What’s happening in Hell now?" Zheng Yichen asked the defeated Asura Demon on the ground — too curious for its own good, the fishhook’s failure to snag didn’t save it from being dragged out by Zheng Yichen’s casting of the fishing rod as if lassoing a horse.
"Hell is in chaos. Ever since the Battle Maniac Asura went missing, Hell has been a complete mess," the Asura Demon clearly recognized Zheng Yichen. When the Battle Maniac Asura ordered the demons to hunt down Zheng Yichen, they all received his appearance.
This led to a sort of... reverence.
This was the human who had fought face to face with the Battle Maniac Asura and survived — someone who, against expectations, not only lived but had recently turned a Corpse Demon into ashes right before its eyes.
"Tell me more specifically."
The 4-armed Asura Demon quickly relayed what it knew to Zheng Yichen. Although Supreme Demons were active in the Mortal Realm, they spent far more time elsewhere: in Hell.
Not all Supreme Demons resided there, but each had some influence in Hell, owning territory at the very least.
But now, with the Supreme Demons gone, they recalled how not long ago the Battle Maniac Asura returned to Hell, severely wounded, kicking down doors and bulldozing many Supreme Demon headquarters... And then Hell became thoroughly ’masterless.’
