Chapter 381: Chapter 305: Here for tourism?_1
Freedom of movement, eh... For the local residents, that’s a perfectly normal phrase. They also need such inspections, and as long as there are no issues, they can move about freely.
The madness wasn’t contagious, it was caused by three days without darkness, and after the celestial events returned to normal, there would be no more cases of madness, except in very special instances.
As for Black Light, well, ordinary people aren’t fit to be affected by it.
Even though the energy level in this world is high, over ninety percent of the population are still ordinary people.
What’s a mere formality for the average person meant that Zheng Yichen could expect the majority of his actions in this world would go unobstructed, as long as he wasn’t committing arson or murder... No, even if he did, as long as it wasn’t too extreme, he probably wouldn’t be interfered with?
After he left the crime scene, there would probably be some special agents of this world who would come to clean it up, right? Um, and if any short-sighted people caused him trouble, they would be taken care of before he even needed to step in.
"But who told me I’m a normal person?" After finishing the newspaper in his hand, Zheng Yichen went to a restaurant. Money wasn’t an issue for him. After he found a suitable place to sleep for a couple of days, his mental state had finally recovered. On his way to find human settlements, he’d come across many crazed individuals, including some locals with power.
He tried to save those who had been tainted by the Black Light. When he realized they were beyond help, he ended their struggle with dignity; their possessions were his reward.
Zheng Yichen experimented with the power of the Black Light, but it had little effect on him. The Black Light he encountered wasn’t from mad people, but from wild beasts tainted by it. After feeding on their blood, he found that his Light type powers could still be used normally, now just with added Black Light characteristics.
This meant that the organisms affected by Black Light underwent changes, not only in power but also in their very constitution. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have gained Black Light-related powers by feeding on them.
Black Light, how to describe it... It’s rather dark!
The Light type powers in this world don’t amplify a person’s emotions, whereas Black Light amplifies negative ones. But the recently demonized Zheng Yichen didn’t have much of a problem with that, having already strained his mental state, any further impact hardly phased him, and it didn’t seem to be that significant anyway.
Perhaps it was because he wasn’t of this world, and thus the power didn’t have much influence on him. If there had been a significant effect, he could’ve tried using the Demonic Abyss Seven Kills to expel the demonic thoughts originating from the negative emotions... Well, it’s like exploiting a bug. However, that bug wasn’t easy to come by.
He still had to do it like before, either invoking the Asura Battle Intent during group battles to draw out the enemy’s fighting spirit and absorb the demonic thoughts generated in combat to meet the conditions for releasing the Demonic Abyss Seven Kills, or deliberately ’Demonize’ himself against the sandworms, meeting the conditions to use his Secret Technique.
The former was safe and reliable, at worst leading to a temporary state of insanity, the latter was too dangerous, requiring a way to buffer or alleviate his mental state.
The influence of Black Light on the intensity of his demonic thoughts during Demonization was limited, but it made recovery afterwards more difficult. It was fine to use as a conventional power, but until he gained a deeper understanding, reckless use would only complicate matters for himself.
But back to the point, this restaurant had no meat dishes.
The owner had a listless air, and it seemed his mood had affected his cooking skills. The food tasted bland and uninspiring, especially considering it was all vegetarian. Judging by the owner’s attitude, he was just short of serving a couple of steamed buns to send patrons on their way.
"Sigh, there’s a serious shortage of meat," lamented the restaurant owner. "You want meat? I’d like some too. Due to the impact of the three suns, any farms that could go under have gone under. There’s still some frozen meat, but now it’s a rationed resource, extremely expensive if you want more than the allotted amount. However, the crops are still normal. How about I sell you a couple of cans of meat for an extra charge?"
To strengthen his case, the restaurant owner glanced at the store across the street, "You can’t find that stuff in shops now!"
"...Give me two cans," Zheng Yichen’s mouth twitched slightly. The three suns had a massive impact on this world; it was completely normal for the farms to have collapsed. With so many animals going mad and mutating, it would’ve been odd if the farms were able to continue as usual.
The restaurant owner got two cans of meat for Zheng Yichen, who tried them and found they tasted quite good. After eating his fill of the side dishes, he left the place. At a store, he saw that most of the shelves were bare, offering not a single piece of meat.
Although the staff were restocking, the items were unaffected by the celestial events, such as bottled water and some everyday goods.
He found some snacks, bought a few packs, then wandered elsewhere, purchasing some electronics from this world. He also wanted to buy some firearms from this world.
```
However, in this world, firearms were not like in some free countries on Earth, where you could simply find a store to buy them. Therefore, he bought whatever he could get his hands on, and a local strongman watched Zheng Yichen leave, a motorcycle trailing a large bundle behind it.
"Is he here on vacation?"
"At least from what we’ve seen so far, he appears to be on vacation," said a female assistant next to the local strongman. Eating at restaurants, browsing malls, and shopping spree—these activities were almost indistinguishable from those of tourists, and even such behavior was not beyond their expectations.
They planned to cultivate a group of Dusk mercenaries, who, while seeking revenge on the worlds they fought against, incidentally enriched the power system of their own world. So, when the Dusk mercenaries took action, they would surely try to acquire some technology and knowledge from other worlds.
Advanced technology was hard to come by, but it was worthwhile to acquire whatever technology was accessible. Civil technologies were also the crystallization of high-tech achievements and were sufficient for their research.
Zheng Yichen’s current actions were obviously in pursuit of technology native to their world. The female assistant continued, "He’s about to leave our world; do you really not plan to engage further with him?"
"That depends on the higher-ups," said the local strongman, shaking his head. There had been profound misunderstandings between them, the Dusk mercenaries, and the Proxy Agents; whether to actively communicate was not his decision to make: "Since he’s gone, let’s continue with our previous tasks. Clean up today’s issues in this town."
After his shopping spree, Zheng Yichen headed towards the Dusk Territory, and he didn’t even need to navigate; just following the Dusk milestones in a straight line would suffice. Along the way, he encountered crazed alien beasts, which he efficiently killed, drained of blood, skinned, and deboned. With those tasks now completed, it was natural to collect some fresh materials.
He arrived in the city where the Dusk Cathedral was located, a city that had become chaotic. From a distance, one could see the military stationed there, and the city had also suffered heavily from alien beast attacks. When he arrived, he encountered no blockades; the troops sealing the city immediately let Zheng Yichen through.
There were no melodramatic incidents with anyone coming forward to provoke or trouble him. After delivering the goods he brought back to the storage facility, Zheng Yichen started wandering through the city anew.
Soldiers could be seen everywhere on the streets, and eye-catching slogans were plastered on the walls. Some citizens even volunteered to undergo some kind of check-up in temporary cabins. Despite its disordered state, this city was, resource-wise, much better off than the previous town.
Of course, he still occasionally saw soldiers escorting deranged individuals to certain places as he walked through the city.
The restaurants here had meat, but it was rationed and not cheap.
Zheng Yichen had a genuinely high-quality meal here.
After leaving the restaurant, Zheng Yichen went to another destination, acquiring a good deal of additional ’good stuff,’ including some large electronic devices peculiar to this world—rough but highly effective. He also purchased some magazines to read.
With the analysis of the artificial intelligence Lilith, it was confirmed that much of the technology in this world was developed based on its environment. Technologies that worked here might not be suitable or even functional in other worlds.
"Hmm... that’ll do," he glanced at the sky, which was now at dusk. Zheng Yichen also observed the ’Triple Sunset’ phenomenon this world returned to during normalcy. However, the phenomenon didn’t last long, disappearing in less than twenty minutes.
Having seen all there was to see in this world and finished his purchases, there was no point in staying any longer, and he eagerly wanted to go home.
The holiday given by Dusk did not start after he left this world but after he resolved the issues here.
Even though Dusk hadn’t squeezed his vacation down to less than a week like a capitalist might have, no one could guarantee that Dusk wouldn’t pull such a move, even though his vacation times had been quite generous so far.
"If we miss this chance now, it’s genuinely missed," said an elder looking at Zheng Yichen, who had returned to the interior of Dusk Cathedral, to the person beside him.
Another middle-aged man shook his head, "Let it be, the information we needed has already been obtained. This Proxy Agent does not have a favorable impression of us, and more interaction wouldn’t likely lead to significant progress."
The information provided by the captured Boundary Breakers was already comprehensive, and their world possessed unique secret techniques to extract more information directly from the minds of the Boundary Breakers.
Proxy Agents were different from Dusk mercenaries; they were stronger but also greatly bound by the arrangements of Dusk. Their freedom was far less than that of Dusk mercenaries, and their actions were much more orchestrated by Dusk...
