Chapter 38: Chapter 36 It’s Not That I Can’t Accept_1

Zheng Yichen recently had been wanting to explore around the southern forest, hoping to find some undiscovered anomalies to investigate. He couldn’t venture too deep into the forest, but he could operate within the zones between the outskirts and the most dangerous areas at its core.

In such places, he could encounter some extraordinary creatures that weren’t too powerful, which would allow him to keep his condition in peak form while also retaining the chance of encountering anomalies.

As long as those extraordinary creatures from the forest didn’t suddenly launch a monstrous siege, the Environmental Adjustment Bureau’s people generally wouldn’t bother with this area.

Zheng Yichen didn’t rush into the anomaly; instead, he circled around it first. He wanted to take care of all the Evil Spirits before considering entering to take a look. If he didn’t deal with these Evil Spirits outside, he worried that he might encounter other accidents after going in, getting stuck in a difficult situation from both sides.

A few minutes later, Zheng Yichen’s black spear pinned the last Evil Spirit against a tree. He took a light breath; since the Evil Spirits had no blood, his Bloodsucking Damage didn’t provide him with any extra stamina or a boost in his physical condition during the fight.

He felt a mental boost, yet the biggest change was that his focus became sharper during combat. Other effects were probably similar to the information he’d received from his medical examination at Dusk Cathedral: unusually active mental state, making him prone to having bizarre dreams.

The battle took a toll on him as he had to run at full speed to circle around the Evil Spirits, which could ignore obstacles, while seeking opportunities to attack. After dealing with the last Evil Spirit, he could finally rest properly.

He glanced at the wounds on his body; attacks from Evil Spirits delivered substantial blows with not insignificant power, tearing open the weaker sections of his protective suit. The stronger parts could prevent injuries unless struck directly.

The last Evil Spirit dissipated completely. After resting for a moment, Zheng Yichen collected the residual dust left behind. The dust, although not much from each spirit, added up to a small bagful after gathering from all.

Zheng Yichen didn’t know the use of this dust, but since it didn’t take up much space, he decided to carry it along. After finding his previously lost backpack and ensuring nothing was missing, he rubbed his hands together and returned to the location of the anomaly.

The anomaly in the woods was surrounded by twisting distortions, but the trees themselves seemed unaffected. Zheng Yichen took some photos, performed a few tests, capturing some mutated birds, tied them up with rope and threw them into the anomaly. After fishing them back out and confirming there was no additional risk, he cautiously stepped in.

As he got closer to the center of the anomaly, the pressure Zheng Yichen felt increased, but it still didn’t hinder his actions nor cause him to faint. Approaching the center, he discovered some new bodies.

The bodies were torn to pieces, with all of their internal organs missing; not only was it a gruesome sight, but Zheng Yichen also noticed that their weapons, gear, and electronic devices were all gone, just like the other bodies he had encountered before.

"...They’re picked clean," Zheng Yichen stood up. He couldn’t deal with these bodies for now; it was possible to handle them after the anomaly dissipated. However, their belongings had been stripped so thoroughly that even their Hunter licenses were nowhere to be found.

If it weren’t for the fact that their bodies, along with their clothing, were too severely damaged, Zheng Yichen had every reason to suspect that the corpses could have been stripped to the point of not even leaving their underwear behind.

Having traversed the last stretch of distance, Zheng Yichen suddenly felt the oppressive forces on his body vanish. In this environment, he sensed a slight constriction of his body, subtle compared to the ostensible opposite situation when he was near Dog Head George.

It seemed the Environmental Adjustment peculiar to this world was affecting his physical constitution. The oppressive physical sensation didn’t last long before he adapted to it; after all, it was a very faint influence. However, beyond the physical effects, what became more active was his perception of the surroundings.

Previously, in a world associated with an anomaly, he had sensed ’humidity’ in the environment— not the kind from overly damp air, but something describable as a ’Water Element’.

Here, he didn’t feel an overly active ’humidity,’ but the ’Energy’ in the environment was generally more active. This energy wasn’t as intense as the ’humidity’ in the other world, and it appeared well-balanced instead of being skewed toward a specific aspect.

In the environment he was in now, this sensation rapidly faded away, settling down to a mere tenth of its original intensity. The clear perception he had once had became very hazy, and his body cooled down completely.

The place Zheng Yichen found himself in, apart from the mist-shrouded anomaly behind him, was a graveyard. There were toppled, shattered tombstones and crosses, with decayed skeletons, stripped of their flesh, scattered around. In this place, night reigned, and in the darkness, one could see glimmers of light darting about—either wolves or wild dogs.

From the remnants of torn fabric on the skeletons, he could tell that the level of industry in this world wasn’t high. The inscriptions on the tombstones were too eroded for Zheng Yichen to make out more than a few complete characters—characters he recognized.

"Tsk, tsk," he clicked his tongue twice and turned to look back at the anomaly behind him; his eyes suddenly widened: "Fuck!"

Without any hesitation, he rushed towards the fading anomaly, and at that moment, the ground also began to stir. Rotten hands, still covered in decaying flesh, broke through the soil, blocking the path before Zheng Yichen. Faced with those sluggish rotten hands, Zheng Yichen jumped high, easily bypassing these obstacles.

As the anomaly disappeared, the mists churned, but the anomaly, once distinct in the mist, gradually faded, completely obscured by the fog.

At the moment he entered the mist and felt no pressure, Zheng Yichen knew something was wrong. He scratched his cheek somewhat sullenly, yet without much panic in his heart, for he had already learned some important information.

Adjusting to a new place wasn’t impossible; otherwise, he would not have ventured in despite knowing the anomaly would vanish. His ambivalence stemmed mainly from nearly ten years of living in Hazy City; a sudden change of place was inevitably a bit difficult to let go of and to adjust to.

He was prepared for it, but wishful thinking made him not expect the anomaly to vanish so quickly. After the anomaly dissipated, the fog started to clear rapidly. Behind Zheng Yichen, the sounds of the ground breaking were lively, and many shaky figures were converging on him. He whipped out his fishing rod, and a black substance swiftly covered it.

"Bring it on, you rotting flesh!" The disappearance of the anomaly didn’t cause Zheng Yichen too much trouble, but he was still irritated inside. His brand-new bike, for instance!

He wondered who would benefit from the motorcycle he had just bought if it was left to sit unused.
