Chapter 340: Chapter 274 Just an Individual Proprietor_1
In Ahn Ke’s research institute, Zheng Yichen saw a large number of modified creatures. Some of these creatures had severe mutations, while others appeared relatively normal, but the one thing they all had in common was their eyes.
"Their adaptability to the environment is very strong, and what’s more important is their lifeform level..." Ahn Qi was telling Zheng Yichen about the uniqueness of these aberrant creatures.
Ahn Ke’s institute specialized in biological research, and an Eye of the Planet was enough material to complete subsequent research. Currently, that eye was well preserved; as a special organ, it could last indefinitely without any special preservation methods as long as it was regularly provided with some nutrients.
But what mattered most were the research outcomes. Thanks to Ahn Ke’s studies, the lifeform levels of these aberrant creatures had become higher. A higher lifeform level meant that they could undergo more advanced modifications.
A couple of days ago, some experimental subjects had been sent to the hunters group. In different worlds, these subjects had performed exceptionally well, but the number of subjects that could be deployed to those worlds was not high.
Experimental subjects are also biological entities. Some lack adaptability, and after being transported, they possess no combat capabilities. The first step is to wake up the unconscious subjects.
"As long as they undergo the corresponding modifications, they can gain greater potential. I am currently trying to replicate the Eye of the Planet to conduct formal transplantation experiments," said a woman who bore some resemblance to Ahn Qi as she approached. She introduced herself, saying, "My name is Ahn Ke, Ahn Qi’s fifth sister."
"I am called Chang Qing." Zheng Yichen continued to look at the aberrant creatures. He wasn’t very interested in them, but he found the concept of lifeform level mentioned by Ahn Qi quite intriguing. Even Eileena was interested in the Eye of the Planet, hoping to perform a self-modification.
There are differences between science and magic, but if research results could complement one another, that would be great.
Zheng Yichen asked, "What about the mutation issue?"
"The mutation rate is over 95%, but these issues can be adjusted later on. With the conditions here, the ideal result is to reduce the mutation rate below 70%," Ahn Ke replied, her eyes sparkling as she stared at Zheng Yichen. "But with your help, it would be different."
Ahn Qi had seen the video Zheng Yichen sent, and the environment was undoubtedly heavily polluted, worse than the effects of a massive overlapping of alien phenomena. It was the type of environment where just breathing could cause problems. However, Zheng Yichen moved about in that environment without any precautions.
Either Zheng Yichen’s lifeform level was higher, which allowed him to completely ignore the mutational effects of that environment, or Zheng Yichen had some special characteristic that prevented mutation effects...
As a Proxy Agent whom Dusk had taken an interest in, both possibilities were plausible.
"I can share all my research findings with you, as long as you cooperate with me a bit."
"I don’t think that will work," Zheng Yichen shook his head. He saw a sort of crazed passion for life forms in Ahn Ke’s eyes. Er, it wasn’t exactly craziness; after all, she was rational. More precisely, it was fanaticism.
The zeal for modifying and shaping life forms was unsettling when being observed with such eyes; Zheng Yichen felt like he was being viewed as an editable unit in her gaze.
"...just a small sample of blood and connective tissue would suffice," she continued.
That’s it? Zheng Yichen pondered briefly. This exchange for more research results seemed acceptable. He looked at Ahn Qi, who gently rubbed her forehead and said to Zheng Yichen, "Our cooperative relationship may undergo some changes soon due to Dusk and your identity."
"If possible, I would still like to maintain our current relationship, but the Ahn family might not agree."
"I feel like I’m about to be in full-scale conflict with you all," Zheng Yichen said. "Big families carry their own brand of arrogance, thinking they can control everything, leading to subsequent conflicts..."
Ahn Qi rolled her eyes involuntarily. "You’ve read too many novels. I won’t deny the arrogance of some family members, but to suggest that the family would do something so foolish is impossible. If that were the case, someone in the family would’ve sought independence long ago."
Although the scenario Zheng Yichen described wasn’t impossible, it would not happen to him. His identity had been clarified. If the Ahn family were to take actions that would obviously lead to a rift between both parties, Ahn Qi would have to consider some things.
While the absence of the family’s resources would make future development difficult—equivalent to giving up everything—at times, a wise severance might also serve as a way to preserve the family.
Occasionally some people impulsively do foolish things, but such a person does not represent the interests of the whole family and would instead become someone who undermines the collective interests. There is no reason for a major family to protect such a person or to go out of their way to defend them.
In a big family, there are many people, but to say that they are all linked by kinship would be an exaggeration. Mutual interests are what make a family more unified. Take her generation of siblings, for instance; Ahn Qi was only familiar with a few of them.
The rest were just ordinary relations; some she might not even see once a year, let alone distant family members like uncles and nieces. Ahn Qi had never met some of them. The Ahn family was too large; just look at her father, who openly had six women, two of whom were sisters, including her and her blood sister Ahn Longling’s mother.
As for the rules? The rules here in Hazy City are different from those outside, and the local authorities are well aware that if the major families here wanted, they could completely divert most of the resources and relocate directly into an Alien Phenomenon world.
Therefore, the rules here are significantly different compared to the Outer City, and it is the common folk who talk about this kind of "immoral" behavior while envying it.
Among the six women of her father’s official relationships, aside from her birth mother, Ahn Qi got along well only with the mother of Ahn Longling, while her relationships with the others could be described as relatively average at best, mostly only seeing each other during family banquets.
With a large family and a growing population, it’s really hard to maintain close kinship ties.
"After all, I’m just a lone operator."
Ahn Ke asked, "A lone operator capable of destruction?"
"At most, it’s about destroying a power source," Zheng Yichen said realistically, "My daily life in Hazy City is a time for rest, and I don’t want to get involved in too many things. The cooperation between me and Ahn Qi is quite comfortable."
There was no doubt about this, Ahn Qi would seldom disturb Zheng Yichen, and when he needed anything, Ahn Qi would arrange it perfectly. In return, whenever Zheng Yichen finished a task, he would bring back some rather special things.
Since it was a partnership, there had to be input to receive output.
Ahn Qi smiled softly, giving Ahn Ke a glance, who noticed Ahn Qi’s expression, "I really don’t mind, being an assistant is fine with me."
As for the family’s plans for the future, Ahn Ke didn’t place much emphasis on them. If there was an opportunity, she would strive for it; if not, it was okay as long as she wasn’t excluded.
But since Zheng Yichen had said as much, it meant that Ahn Qi was effectively the designated collaborator. Once the family knew about this, even if there were additional arrangements, the priorities would be adjusted; they wouldn’t foolishly assign extra people to the task.
After all, Ahn Qi’s abilities were not lacking, she was capable of handling the matter; the reason for concern about additional complications was naturally her lack of Dusk adaptability, and the family’s desire to arrange someone more "trustworthy."
Ahn Ke had little feeling about this matter, driven by her interests, as she preferred studying various lifeforms and programming modifications to those lifeforms. She viewed life as a very fascinating existence. A slight change to a normal lifeform can produce completely new variations.
Every modification or adjustment was like facing new possibilities, new surprises. Even the weakest lifeforms could become apex predators in the food chain with some modifications.
Life is endless, and so are the changes; this was too interesting.
Zheng Yichen cut off two strands of hair and squeezed out a small vial of blood, "You can have this, but I don’t want to discover an extra clone body of myself without reason."
Ahn Ke shook her head, "You won’t have a clone body, and it’s impossible for anyone else to create one of you."
"?"
Ahn Ke didn’t conceal the truth and explained that when they dealt with the half-dragon experimental subject, Zheng Yichen had bled. After isolating the blood, she conducted some experiments, the result of which revealed that his blood was exceptionally unique, with an unavoidable ’withering’ condition reminiscent of a very peculiar encryption.
"Therefore, it is impossible to replicate your clone body through the blood. If one really wants to conduct more effective research, it would require obtaining materials in a much more special way," Ahn Ke said, her gaze shifting from Zheng Yichen’s face downwards.
Zheng Yichen’s eyes twitched, "I am still a child right now!"
"That’s not important. My father officially has six women, including Ahn Qi’s mother," Ahn Ke said calmly, pulling a storage disk from her pocket, "This is the latest research data regarding the Eye of the Planet. I’ll be responsible for providing the research materials, but not for interpreting them."
After handing the storage disk to Zheng Yichen, she quickly left with the blood sample and strands of hair he provided, not wanting to waste any time. Zheng Yichen’s blood wasn’t easy to preserve, even when uncontaminated.
But before the blood began to wither after leaving Zheng Yichen’s body, plenty of research could still be done. He didn’t need to worry too much about cloning; that was truly impossible. Nevertheless, for biological modification, it was worth a try, and to prevent withering symptoms, one could attempt to replicate a degraded version of the blood.
Before that, Ahn Ke needed to first confirm Zheng Yichen’s ’lifeform level’.
