Chapter 317: Chapter 259 Arson 1
Since he had returned to the Dusk Cathedral, Zheng Yichen didn’t leave right away. He exchanged some information with others at the storage facility, and then left without much delay. He wasn’t sure if there were other bases similar to this one in the world.
Even if he knew, it wouldn’t be possible to visit each one. The carrying capacity of the Dusk Cathedral was limited; it could handle a little over seven hundred people without issue, but any more than that, and the people here would probably start killing each other first.
Not long after Zheng Yichen left the Dusk Cathedral, the number of people there dwindled, not because Morley’s side took action to clean up, but because some people wandered around the Dusk Cathedral... and ended up in places they shouldn’t have.
Upon learning of this, Morley didn’t react much. The Dusk had always been indifferent to many things; as long as no one deliberately damaged anything, the Dusk’s executions wouldn’t implicate others, but those responsible would surely be doomed.
Kind words fail to persuade the doomed; everything that needed to be said had been said. If people insisted on courting death, what could he do, break their legs first?
Perhaps these were the only survivors left in the native world, but he wasn’t God, nor any kind of Guardian. With an alternative already in place, were these remaining natives that important? Not really.
Tilling fields and allocating supplies were still underway. A few hundred people seemed like a lot yet also very few. Aside from a few troublemakers, managing wasn’t that difficult. Moreover, with the limited size of the Dusk Territory, anyone with a bit of sense knew there was nowhere to run if they caused trouble.
The best way to survive was to cooperate with the management.
The transport carried a vast amount of resources. Although not all that the base had, it was more than enough for several hundred people. Better yet, the Dusk Cathedral had tap water, which, unlike the contaminated water outside, flowed normally.
This eased some of the survivors’ worries. The available seeds for crops were abundant, and the nutrient solutions for planting were also provided. Inside the Dusk Cathedral, curious children looked at the only two Dusk nuns present.
After arriving, they didn’t have to do much work; they just needed to take turns watching the water source. They were free to play as they liked inside the Dusk Cathedral, as long as they didn’t wander around aimlessly or cause any damage.
Some adults also felt a rare sense of relief. As long as they didn’t leave the safe zone, they didn’t have to live in fear, and they could even leisurely enjoy the scenery... although that scenery could become headache-inducing after a while, there was no concern about assimilation.
"But are we going to stay here forever? Is there really no way to solve all this?" someone wondered in despair.
Inside the transport, Monili sighed lightly as she looked at some specimens for testing. The transport didn’t just bring supplies; it also brought various research equipment. With the world in its current state, restoring production was practically impossible.
Carrying research equipment was also essential.
If the Dusk Territory weren’t so special, she wouldn’t be taking the risk of conducting research now. The mutants sent into the Dusk Territory would end up in one of two states.
The first was to turn into black ash and disappear; they had tested this with lab animals. The second was to become severed from environmental assimilation, and these things often lacked a "self," strictly speaking, they were abnormal biological mutations.
Animals like chickens, ducks, and geese were out of the question; if they mutated and were brought here, they would turn to ash, which was a great relief. At least this ensured that their place wouldn’t harbor any latent infections. As for the ensuing research, they just had to be careful not to get infected and assimilated.
The things that didn’t turn into black ash were fruits, soil, or some other plants.
Using these materials still posed a risk of infection and assimilation, but the changed nature differed from that in the outside environment.
Test animals would still mutate, but during mutation, some retained a semblance of "normalcy," preserving their animal instincts, though they would eventually go mad after a short while. This also meant that the things influenced by the environment would be cut off in the Dusk Territory.
Perhaps these materials could be used for a special kind of enhancement, or even to grant humans adaptability to the environment? Monili had this bold idea.
She went to find her younger brother...
"No, we can’t pursue this research!" Morley said decisively, "I plan to become a Dusk mercenary, then take you to a safe world."
"A safe world?"
"Yes, as long as the problems in that world are solved, it will be safe." Morley said earnestly, "Give up this unnecessary research. Even if you want to continue, you can wait a bit longer."
Monili looked at an enclosed cage and then at her brother’s serious expression, smiling helplessly. She pressed a button on the control panel, and the enclosed cage was flooded with cryogenic fluid: "I won’t study this stuff anymore. It’s not like this world can be saved anyway."
"Once I’ve completely settled things here." Morley left the temporary lab inside the transport. Essen had passed on the leadership role to him, trusting that Morley could become a Dusk mercenary. Morley had also consulted with the Dusk nuns, and indeed he could...
