Chapter 306: Chapter 253 Planetary Abyss_1
```
"It really is a safe place..." Zhang Ning gazed at Dusk Cathedral with some disbelief. There was no sign of flesh assimilation here—everything appeared to be at odds with the abnormal environment that surrounded them.
After seeing this place, Zhang Ning no longer harbored any doubts. The siblings couldn’t wait to run towards Dusk Cathedral, but they stopped as soon as their feet touched the normal ground around it.
"What’s wrong?" Zheng Yichen also realized something was amiss and immediately approached, looking at the siblings who had stopped. They turned their heads to look at Zheng Yichen in unison, and Zhang Ning removed his protective mask to reveal fine capillaries showing on his face.
The capillaries wriggled like red threadworms, the corners of his mouth twitching subtly. He removed his gloves, his expression complex, "So it turns out that we are not normal either."
"Why is this happening!" Zhang Jing threw down the mask in their hand, cradling their face and crying in agony. The tears that flowed were also the color of blood, "I just want to live a normal life!"
"..." Zhang Ning patted Zhang Jing’s back, he sighed mournfully and looked at Zheng Yichen, "Thank you, Proxy Agent of Dusk."
He said this as he pulled along an unwilling Zhang Jing. Zhang Ning’s expression became more serious,
"Jingjing, let’s go. While we still resemble humans."
"Brother, I don’t want to die." Tears streaked Zhang Jing’s cheeks, with more blood vessels appearing on the siblings’ skin.
"...Let’s go."
"...Yeah, thank you." Although somewhat reluctant, the blood-red-eyed Zhang Jing looked at Zheng Yichen and agreed with her brother’s idea.
"Goodbye."
"By the way, there may still be some normal people in this world, but I can’t be sure if what I’m saying now is really my own thoughts," Zhang Ning suddenly said as he prepared to walk with Zhang Jing deeper into Dusk.
He tapped his head with a finger, "It’s as if we’re connected to a large database, knowing a lot of things—the Dusk mercenaries, the Proxy Agents, and the reason this world has become what it is. I even know my sister’s thoughts and everything about her..."
The siblings walked towards the depths of Dusk, their bodies ’ignited’, and when they were just over ten meters away from the entrance of Dusk Cathedral, they turned into humanoid ash. The ash took two more steps forward before it completely dissipated, leaving behind two partially flesh-consumed artificial hearts on the ground.
At the entrance of Dusk, a native Dusk nun watched all of this unfold calmly.
Inside Dusk Cathedral, Zheng Yichen held an apple, plucked from the trees in the orchard. Inside Dusk Cathedral, the fruit was unaffected, nor did it turn into ash like the siblings.
"Are there still normal people in this world?"
"There are, but that’s not the important part." The native Dusk nun gave an accurate answer.
Zheng Yichen looked at the two artificial hearts on the table, catching the apple he’d tossed into the air, "Can I eat this?"
"Ordinary people cannot."
Crunch—
Zheng Yichen took a bite of the apple in his hand, lacking the sensation of gnawing at raw flesh that he expected. He had eaten aberrant creatures infected by the Demon Flower—just an apple after all... He wasn’t an ordinary person, so he ate it. Quite frankly, it tasted not bad.
"This won’t destroy the world, will it?"
"Can the microorganisms on your body destroy the world?" Tia countered Zheng Yichen’s question. He understood that the apple he ate, relative to this cancerous world, was like consuming a bacterium of this world.
Had he become a white blood cell?
"So what about the living people in the world? Are they like individual cells?"
"You’ve caught on well."
"Alright, check my body. If I’m alright, I’ll set off again." Zheng Yichen placed the half-consumed hearts into a storage locker. The ability to bring them into Dusk Cathedral meant they were different from the situation with the siblings.
Zhang Ning and Zhang Jing were living beings, whereas these were items.
```
After briefly pondering the siblings’ situation, Zheng Yichen shook his head. At that time, he truly hadn’t noticed anything amiss, the siblings had believed they were fine when in reality they had long been influenced by the cancerous world.
Perhaps the artificial hearts allowed them to avoid directly becoming lumps of flesh, but essentially they were not much different from those monstrous beings.
"I should have realized it earlier..." In the infirmary, Zheng Yichen reflected that the moment the Zhang siblings encountered those mounds of flesh on the street and were greeted as normal, he should have recognized that the Zhangs were the same as those creatures.
The creatures accepted them and did not reject them.
"Alright, you can go now," Tia set down her stethoscope and said to a shirtless Zheng Yichen. The so-called checkup was just a quick listen to the heartbeat.
Back on the road and no longer burdened with passengers, Zheng Yichen sped up. He glanced at the city where the Zhang siblings had stayed and decided to bypass it altogether.
If they hadn’t encountered him, they probably could have continued living ’normally’ for quite a while, until one day they gradually realized they were no different from those fleshly beings and would transform from human to creature.
But by that time, their choices were likely limited. Having been taken to Dusk Territory and influenced by it, they revealed their true nature. To realize the difference and still make a choice was perhaps a good end, wasn’t it?
Pressing on at full speed, Zheng Yichen passed through numerous cities and noticed that the closer he got to his destination, the more severe the flesh transformation of the cities became. In the center of one city was a gigantic eye that occupied two-thirds of the city.
The creatures moved about on top of a city that was atop an eye, yet nothing seemed ’out of place’.
Zheng Yichen began to understand what the so-called cancerous change in this world really was. The planet was becoming alive, a process that might continue for a long time. If uninterrupted, it would go on indefinitely, and the planet would eventually become a unique entity.
"I want to face the Boundary Breakers; if I encounter someone from the Equilibrium Faction, that would be even better..." Staring at the ’Abyss’ at his feet, Zheng Yichen’s expression grew grim. After finally arriving at this spot, he glimpsed the entity he needed to confront.
A profoundly deep and vast ’Abyss’ loomed below, not dark inside but a dark red color, and when the sun shone upon it, Zheng Yichen could see an additional ’vortex’ within the Abyss.
In the night, under the light of a blood moon, the interior of the Abyss revealed densely packed chunks of flesh writhing. The sight overwhelmed Zheng Yichen who didn’t want to wrestle with such bizarre entities; he aimed to deal with members of the Equilibrium Faction.
Silently accumulating enough merit points to then have repeated opportunities for preservation.
Taking out a fishing rod, Zheng Yichen tried using it to connect with the World of Death, but couldn’t catch anything. This world either lacked a special space like ’Hell,’ or Hell was utterly empty without anything remaining.
Swinging his fishing rod, a wisp of greenish flame fell into the Abyss. The vast chasm remained undisturbed as the flame descended like a grain of sand into the ocean, indicating that to solve the problem, he needed to enter the Abyss itself.
Looking at the flesh-transformed edge of the Abyss, Zheng Yichen’s mouth twitched slightly. He planned to first amass a wave of power before proceeding.
He wasn’t going to fight battles he wasn’t confident of winning. Who knew what awaited beneath the Abyss?
Glancing at the blood moon in the sky, a light breeze blew by that seemed to carry a blood-red hue and a greasy scent. Leaving the area, Zheng Yichen returned to a city he had passed before—the one with the enormous eye.
Riding on the wind, he surveyed the eye from above. A feeling of irritation arose within him. The dead-grey eye, reminiscent of a dead person’s, twitched ever so slightly. Zheng Yichen’s hair stood on end—it wasn’t an illusion. The eye in the city was fixated on him.
"Fuck!" In Zheng Yichen’s hand appeared a black spear. He tapped it with the fishing rod, and a greenish flame enveloped the spear. The spear, like a meteor, plummeted from the sky and pierced directly into the center of the giant eyeball.
Zheng Yichen saw crack lines like glass spreading from the center of the eyeball, and from the center, an outpouring torrent of Hellfire erupted.
The fire released from the enhanced fishing rod didn’t increase its power, but its damage type shifted from magic to actual harm. Protected though the eyeball might have been by some force, it was directly affected by the burning Hellfire.
The entire city roared to life, filled with piercing screams, as Zheng Yichen, wielding two black spears, leapt down from the sky. The impact of his landing propagated cracks on the ground, spreading like glass fractures.
Geysers of blood surged forth like subterranean waters. Zheng Yichen struck it with his spear, his face filled with distaste. The blood’s feedback still fell within the range of dead blood—only those living blobs of flesh could currently be classified as ’live bodies.’
The creatures within the city were now in a state of rampage, rushing towards Zheng Yichen in a frenzied stampede. Some had numerous blood vessels attached to their bodies, which Zheng Yichen had observed on the way. During nighttime or when few in number, the creatures would transform into ’hearts.’
Just like the situation he’d encountered in the small house before, when passing through a city, come nightfall one could see countless chunks of flesh lying in their own beds with blood vessels spreading from their bodies, covering the entire room and connecting with the external blood vessels on the walls and floor.
With the rise of the sun the next day, they would ’normally’ start a new day, clearly a distinct ’ecosystem.’
