Chapter 280: Chapter 234 Insider_1

This is the ultimate challenge, inside a bunker that has been created, Zheng Yichen, with a face of disappointment, gnawed on those unearthed light bands; it seemed that this was the only effective method for now. After the nuclear explosion targeting the Sky Pillar vanished, he would quickly explore the vicinity.

He wanted to find if there was anything else related to the Sky Pillar, but in the end, it was clear that to deal with this thing, one would either need to sever it with supreme power, which would be a physical attack, or find the root source of this concern.

The third method? Zheng Yichen was doing just that; the light bands were energy crystals. Zheng Yichen had gnawed quite a bit without feeling full.

He had many electrodes attached to his body; these devices were used to monitor his physical condition. The projection of the artificial intelligence Lilith watched several mini projection screens, displaying Zheng Yichen’s health monitoring data. He was very healthy; in fact, as he chewed on those light bands, he even generated additional high-energy reactions.

Now, Zheng Yichen was like an energy container.

Furthermore, their location was a bunker that Zheng Yichen had created using Elements manipulation. Above their heads, they could see dense, interwoven light bands spreading out in all directions like a web spanning the vault of the sky.

With the presence of those light bands, the bunker was exceptionally sturdy, even without any concrete or the like. As for the light bands that should have covered the inside of the bunker, Zheng Yichen had cut them all down.

"Your body is reaching its limits."

"It’s still early. Right now, I just regret that I am not an Immortality Cultivator." Zheng Yichen pulled a face, looking at his hands. The vast amount of energy from the light bands made his body glow. The cultivated Blood Asura inner force had been compressed into a small piece.

Zheng Yichen tried to harness this energy, and surprisingly, aside from being unable to directly convert it into his own strength, it was quite convenient for direct use. Even with basic swordsmanship or spearmanship, he could execute tangible long-range attacks.

Even without using those methods, by merely slapping the air, as long as he intentionally used that energy, he could create a strong energy impact.

"In my analysis, your cells show a tendency towards energy crystallization. If this continues, you may transform into a homogenous crystal." Lilith countered; Zheng Yichen spoke from his feelings, while it relied on body data captured through diagnostics.

Zheng Yichen’s cells had begun to exhibit obvious signs of mutation.

"But I feel that my mobility is perfectly normal."

"However, the diagnostic results cannot be wrong. You can try bleeding."

Without hesitating, Zheng Yichen drew a small wound on his finger. The light that emerged from the wound was more intense, and the blood that dripped was no longer red, but a substance akin to a fluorescent agent: "It really is."

Seeing this, he immediately took out several storage tubes kept in his motorcycle, filled them up, and tucked them away. He then tried to generate a black spear. The spear that formed was still normal: "Since that’s the case, let’s start the experiments, I want the most detailed documentation."

"Understood." The artificial intelligence Lilith released all of the motorcycle’s reconnaissance drones, following Zheng Yichen outside the bunker, to comprehensively record his condition and everything he was about to do.

Zheng Yichen channeled all the energy he had gleaned from gnawing on the light bands into the black spear in his hand. His glowing body gradually returned to normal, and as Lilith’s warning started to be verified, Zheng Yichen felt a stiffness in his body.

The black spear in his hand transformed into a light spear enveloping even his palm. The suppressed inner strength was liberated and began to flow throughout his body, relieving some of the stiffness. Even so, Zheng Yichen didn’t feel very well.

Focusing on the distant Sky Pillar, which carried a massive updraft, Zheng Yichen manifested a faint red aura. Burst Mode enhanced his physical strength, and the Blood Asura inner force increased his power. With a dual boost, he threw the black spear, which broke through the sound barrier upon release.

Waves appeared on the struck surface of the Sky Pillar, like ripples from a large stone thrown into a calm lake. The spiral updraft was disrupted after the black spear hit, turning the wind into chaos.

As the ripples gradually subsided, Zheng Yichen, with his excellent vision, saw faint cracks appearing on the struck area of the Sky Pillar. The cracks were a deeper hue, similar to the color of the wound he had made on his glowing body.

"Good! Let’s keep going!"

Zheng Yichen was invigorated. As long as such attacks were useful, that was all that mattered. The Dusk Territory had given him a task, and though he was ’guilty’ by their standards, he was still an employee, a Proxy Agent; they wouldn’t set him up to fail.

But what good would that do for Dusk?

"You need rest, and we need to replenish our supplies." Lilith analyzed Zheng Yichen’s condition. The stiffness he felt was due to the cells’ crystalline mutation. As long as he had enough energy, he would not be affected, but once all that absorbed energy was expended, his body would become like a machine drained of gasoline.

Zheng Yichen had strong regeneration ability. Without the influence of that energy, the mutated cells would gradually recover, but such healing would consume his bodily energy, equivalent to the affected cells being renewed by the potent regeneration ability.

This will inevitably produce some consumption.

They carried a lot of high-energy compressed food supplies, but that clearly wasn’t enough...

"Then we’ll have to look for supplies elsewhere," Zheng Yichen said. When it came to calculating resources, Lilith was superior to him, and finding resources in such harsh environments where even ordinary people struggled to survive wasn’t too difficult.

You could rummage through those abandoned fighter jets and transport vehicles.

Out of caution, Zheng Yichen didn’t search the fighter jets but instead searched the transport vehicles, and sure enough, he found quite a few military supplies, accompanied, of course, by a fair number of corpses.

Most of those bodies had frozen to death. Though the desertified area was not covered in ice, the perceived temperature was already far below that of the Arctic and Antarctic. This phenomenon of not freezing was something Zheng Yichen found quite curious. After sensing it with his elements manipulation abilities, he figured it was probably caused by environmental imbalance.

He took all the supplies he could carry, quickly transporting them back and forth until his dug-out bunker was brimming full.

"Let’s rest for now..." Outside the bunker, with his back to the Sky Pillar, Zheng Yichen looked at the setting sun and said, "Today was just a test; the real work starts tomorrow." Before resting, he took the opportunity to observe the spot hit by the black spear. The crack had gotten smaller but hadn’t completely healed.

What does it feel like to rest in a radiated environment? Anyway... it’s pretty awful, right? Perhaps due to some body altercations caused by gnawing on those light bands, the body check the next day brought Zheng Yichen a rather favorable report from Lilith.

Zheng Yichen’s body was still in a stable and healthy state.

He opened a box and took out some food inside, opened a can, and took a sniff: "Smells not bad."

After eating his fill, Zheng Yichen grabbed a light band and started gnawing on it; the one he had cut the day before had already regenerated overnight.

Some light bands even covered the boxes brought back filled with supplies.

"What is even going on here!!" Sitting alone in the bunker he had carved out, chewing on a bland light band, Zheng Yichen tried to enhance the taste by spreading some condiments on it, which he found among the supplies.

"Nidhogg would call me an expert..."

"Who is Nidhogg?" the artificial intelligence Lilith asked.

"Um, a black dragon from a story that gnaws at the World Tree." Zheng Yichen flicked the light band in his hand: "Don’t you think I look like I’m also gnawing at the roots of the Sky Pillar?"

"But you don’t have that much time."

Zheng Yichen’s mouth twitched, and he quickened the pace of his gnawing. Toothache be damned, with his strong regeneration ability, even if he lost an arm or a leg he could recover; losing teeth was no issue. As long as there was enough food, they would soon grow back.

It wasn’t long before he became a miniature Light man, and Lilith’s warning voice followed; Zheng Yichen’s body had undergone more changes than the day before—he had eaten too much.

"Let’s leave it at that then, to avoid any other unexpected issues," Zheng Yichen said, glancing at the cat spirit cloak he wore. The cloak, affected by the spillover of energy, kept the cat spirit in a manifested state, which was very active. Thin threads of light wove into the cat spirit’s body.

Perhaps because the cat spirit was also an energy entity, but it never directly touched the light bands, instead showing a strong aversion to them. The cat spirit would dim whenever it got close to the light bands.

The energy that collected on it all spilled over from Zheng Yichen.

The light bands were crystalline, but they had a strong restraining effect on energy creatures like the cat spirit. The cat spirit couldn’t consume these things; instead, it would be drained by them.

"The power I wield isn’t Inner Strength but something else; it would probably be drained first as well, wouldn’t it?" He tossed the broken light band in his hand onto the wall, and it quickly fused with another light band upon contact.

Leaving the bunker, Zheng Yichen swung the black spear in his hand, throwing it with all his might. The gleaming black spear accurately pierced the same spot it hit the day before, and more noticeable cracks appeared where the Sky Pillar was struck.

Afterward, Zheng Yichen used other methods to test his attacks and found that incorporating Sky Pillar’s energy into elemental attacks wasn’t very effective. Simple, focused compression attacks were superior. If there were other explosive methods, the effect would likely be even more remarkable...
