Chapter 104: Chapter 102: At Most a Wasted Trip_1
Some warriors riding on motorcycles burst out from the convoy, surrounding the remaining three wasteland wolves that were anxiously trying to retreat.
They had only wanted to follow behind the vehicles, seizing the opportunity to attack a few people and then leave. The convoy was stretched out over a long distance on the road, with the lead and tail vehicles more than five hundred meters apart.
But they hadn’t expected the convoy’s people to be so fierce. With one confrontation, they had killed one of their own kind. Zheng Yichen shook the fishing rod in his hand that hadn’t been stained with any blood and set his sights on the next wasteland wolf.
Compared with fighting Alien Phenomenon creatures, his strength now was significantly less. If it were in the Alien Phenomenon zone, he wouldn’t need to toss the wolf-like creature away, as a mere swing of his fishing rod could cleave it in two.
Or one thrust could open a large hole right through its body.
Swinging the fishing rod in his hand, he flung a lunging wasteland wolf away. The wolf twitched on the ground and failed to stand up again after being struck by Zheng Yichen; many of its bones were broken.
The two remaining wasteland wolves were already preparing to flee. They ran in different directions, but not long after, they turned back more ferociously. The convoy’s people had already blocked their escape routes. If they tried to break through, they would be shot dead, but turning back... at least Zheng Yichen didn’t have a gun.
Faced with the desperate counterattack of the two remaining wasteland wolves, Zheng Yichen’s response was incredibly relaxed. His current dynamic strength made it easy to catch their speed, and his adequately strong physical conditioning even allowed him to match this dynamic visual acuity with speed.
This attribute-crushing battle, along with his mastery of precision thrusts, created two more through-and-through holes in the heads of the two remaining wasteland wolves after two attacks.
Wasteland giant wolf’s canine teeth×8.
As for the wolf pelts, those needed additional treatment to be preserved, and because Zheng Yichen did not bother to keep them, Liu Haipeng mentioned that when Zheng Yichen had time to pass by their new gathering place, he could pick up some of the treated wolf pelts.
The wounds on the killed wasteland wolves were small, allowing the pelts to be preserved intact, which was very suitable for making either clothes or carpets.
"We need to arrange for a clean-up here," said Liu Haipeng, settling back into the vehicle, to the driver Li Yun. The attack of the wasteland wolves was but a minor incident; those beasts were smarter, but in the end, they were still animals that couldn’t get the upper hand when facing humans and their camouflaged ferocity.
The people in their convoy were well-tested, and while the convoy was very long, they had many guards on the lookout. If any wild beast approached, they could be immediately spotted. It was only at night that these wild beasts might have a chance of a successful attack.
But come nighttime, they would encircle the vehicles to form a moving fortress with a well-established perimeter, capable of handling small-scale beast onslaughts.
"Certainly, otherwise moving at night is too risky," Li Yun wholeheartedly agreed with Liu Haipeng’s suggestion.
Back at the front of the convoy, Zheng Yichen studied a wolf tooth in his hand that was longer than ten centimeters, thicker than a person’s finger. After playing with it for a while, he simply threw it into a package hanging from the back seat of the motorcycle.
As for collecting... Zheng Yichen wasn’t particularly obsessive, but since he was already here, he certainly planned to take some local specialties with him. Gold, though valuable, was common and not considered a special local product, despite many wanting to treat it as such.
This journey showed Zheng Yichen the relatively rich variety of species in the post-apocalyptic world. Wasteland wolves were at least a wolf mutation, but there were some that were not at all related to animals with past traces, and he even encountered two tentacle monsters!
Unlike the direct assaults of the wasteland wolves, the subsequent animals encountered were actively cleared by the convoy’s people. These animals could run fast, but against modern transportation and firearms, they were not quick enough.
Mutant creatures were still living organisms, not evolved enough to resist bullets, and so they paled against firearms.
"What accuracy..." Liu Haipeng sighed, gazing at the enormous Alien Phenomenon shrouded in a hazy mist in the distance. They had traveled more than a hundred kilometers in over half a day. The complicated road conditions were one reason for the delay, and the need to clear the path of wild beasts took up additional time.
However, with this experience, the rest of their journey would be much faster. Once they saw the Alien Phenomenon, they were in no hurry and got straight to inspecting the vehicles in the convoy. These vehicles were precious and losing one meant they could carry less with them.
Elsewhere, Zheng Yichen stared at the distant Alien Phenomenon, identifying it carefully. This phenomenon was slightly larger than the previous one he’d encountered. It remained unknown what kind of Alien Phenomenon creature was inside.
Zheng Yichen immediately started setting up his tent, preferring to enter in the best condition instead of rushing in to battle the Alien Phenomenon creatures after a day’s travel.
After the sky had completely darkened, Liu Haipeng arrived at Zheng Yichen’s location with some roasted meat, while Li Yun carried some plastic bags containing side dishes and also held two bottles of drinks—the 1+1 large-sized kind.
Clearly, alcohol was not suitable for drinking in such a place.
"We’ll be staying here, waiting for your victorious return," Liu Haipeng poured a glass of cola for Zheng Yichen. "We can only be spectators here."
"Wait for tomorrow; tonight, I need to rest well," Zheng Yichen said, sipping his drink. He was quite curious about the situation inside the Alien Phenomenon. Help from Liu Haipeng and the others? Forget it, these people would simply faint if they entered the Alien Phenomenon, like delivering their own heads on a platter.
"Then we won’t bother you any longer," Liu Haipeng nodded and left the place with Li Yun.
After returning, the two squatted together and smoked, and Li Yun was the first to speak, "Thinking about it now, we were a bit too reckless before."
"Hahaha, reckless? The resources in that residual area were so abundant, it’s fine to take a gamble like this. If we win, it’s a huge profit, and if we lose, it’s just some fuel we’re squandering, we can totally afford the bet," Liu Haipeng said with a big grin.
Li Yun laughed along, "That’s true, we can completely afford to gamble now, especially considering this isn’t even betting with our lives."
At most, it would just mean a wasted trip. As for Zheng Yichen failing, there was not much they could do about it. Alien Phenomenons were not really related to ordinary folks like them; Zheng Yichen’s main purpose was the Alien Phenomenon, clearly on some special mission or task.
They had seen too many sacrifices made for some mission or task, like in their gathering places where each year many people would die undertaking explorations or clearing mutant beasts.
Even at that very moment as they conversed, it was possible that someone from their convoy had stepped on a hidden venomous creature and perished.
"I feel a bit lonely," Zheng Yichen, sitting inside the tent, commented as he looked at his phone. At that moment, he felt the inside and outside of the tent were like two completely different worlds.
Although he had met quite a few people in the past week and even had some children actively seek him out in the residual area after hearing stories about him, these children admired him tremendously, envying his strength.
And some expressed the wish to grow up and try to take down such a big monster themselves.
Children, as long as they are not brats, are generally quite cute. Children in the apocalypse can hardly afford to be brats; those who dare to be troublesome would not be indulged by their parents. Without a second thought, it would result in a beating – in the apocalyptic world, who would tolerate such temperament?
But acquaintance is just acquaintance. He was still just a passerby in this world, and after interacting with the survivors of the apocalypse, he felt more directly how hard their lives were in such an environment.
And all he had to do was complete his task and he could leave immediately.
Zheng Yichen lying down, changed his posture as he looked at the photos on his phone.
In a world without internet, he could only view locally stored content. Many of the photos were taken in the last few days. After deleting those that were blurry, the remaining ones...uh, the remaining ones didn’t seem to cause much of a stir either.
This world was not like other worlds. Every world seemed to have those who were privy to the Alien Phenomenon, and individuals like transmigrators were probably something he would frequently encounter. In this ’Great World,’ transmigrators were probably the least valuable. If one were to talk about value, it would probably be someone like him who originally didn’t belong to this ’Great World,’ right?
Well, that’s not necessarily true either. It’s possible that Earth is actually a part of this Great World and he just didn’t know.
"Ah ha~ Time for sleep!" Yawning, Zheng Yichen put away his phone. Tomorrow’s matters would be left for tomorrow’s self; today’s task was to rest well, so he could face the Alien Phenomenon creatures in the best condition the next day.
Late into the night, Liu Haipeng led a small team patrolling around, mercilessly exterminating any mutant beasts they encountered.
If someone got injured, they would return and switch out. They had enough people on this expedition to withstand such wear and tear.
The next day, after Zheng Yichen got up, he found that many in the convoy were injured, and in some places, there were many processed mutant beast corpses. After taking care of some physiological needs, he found Li Yun.
"You guys have been busy all night?"
Li Yun, who was gnawing on a piece of dried meat bread, immediately stood up, "Yeah, with so many of us around, it’s easy to attract mutant beasts, so we thought it better to strike first and clear out the nearby mutant beasts."
Zheng Yichen quickly ate the prepared breakfast, which was pure meat. After he had eaten his fill, he stood up, "You guys rest well."
"...Safe travels," Li Yun stood up, looking at Zheng Yichen, who wasn’t even half his age, and said very seriously.
"If all goes well, I might be back before noon," Zheng Yichen waved his hand without turning towards Li Yun, choosing not to ride there.
Such a distance wasn’t worth riding; walking could help digest the food, and in case he didn’t return, it would at least save a motorcycle – two birds with one stone... Pah!
He was looking forward to going back to cuddle with his girl. After all, this world was ultimately too lonely for him.
