Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 687: Light the beacons!
Chapter 687: Light the beacons!
The sound of a potent heartbeat echoed across the now desolate valley, radiating a potent devilish air that caused one’s negative emotions to slowly come to the forefront.
"Alex..." Victoria called out urgently, unwilling to wait for whatever was being birthed at the center of the valley.
"Do you think we would be able to summon a Devil right now?" Alex inquired.
Victoria frowned. "What?"
"I wish to summon Vessina."
"We can do that after we leave," Victoria suggested with Alex shaking his head.
"No."
"Why!?"
Taking a moment to collect his thoughts, Alex turned to explain only for a voice to cut him off.
"Why?"
Both himself and Victoria glanced to the side to find Archibald glaring at them with eyes filled with envy.
"You alright there, champ?"
"Why are you bastards able to act as you please while I can’t even save myself?... Why?"
Alex and Victoria exchanged looks before shifting their attention back to him.
"I wish I could be free like you, why do we have to suffer for the mistakes of our predecessors!... It isn’t fair!" Archibald seemed on the verge of tears as he dropped to his knees, lamenting his condition.
Alex frowned, unsure of what to make of Archibald’s state only for Victoria to speak up.
"He can’t control his emotions. They have gotten the better of him."
"... That explains a lot," Alex remarked in understanding only to pause. "Wait, each devil has the unique emotion they represent, right?"
"That is the case."
"So what emotion is this?... Despair?"
Victoria shook her head. "More like envy. He is envious that we are free and he isn’t."
"So that means whatever is coming out from that cocoon is related to the Devil of Envy."
"That should be the case."
Nodding in understanding, Alex inquired. "Where would she rank on the scale of most likely to kill a man?"
"I don’t know. My research into Devils is lacking." Victoria admitted before quickly adding. "But I guess as long as it’s not Wrath, there’s a chance of survival."
"That’s good enough," Alex said.
Just as he was about to outline his plan, Archibald spoke up again. "Why aren’t you like me?... Why are you two so special and I’m not?"
Unlike before, when his time was laced with self-deprecation, this time, there was a hint of malice in his tone.
Victoria immediately acted, manifesting a series of strings that she used to bind him as she could tell that if she didn’t, Archibald was bound to turn aggressive.
Almost immediately, that happened as Archibald began to struggle against the bindings in a bid to attack Alex, ignoring how they dug into his skin, drawing blood.
Alex came up to him and kicked him in the face, knocking him out in an instant.
"He is right though." Victoria suddenly said, causing Alex to glance at her.
"About what?"
Pointing at the cocoon at the center of the valley, Victoria remarked. "That thing is constantly radiating potent amounts of negative emotion per second yet for some reason, we remain unaffected. Isn’t that strange?"
Alex furrowed his brows. "Is it?"
"It should be. I may not know much about Devils but I know that they are manifestations of every living being’s darkest desires and emotions. They are negative emotions given form. Just like how one would bow before the presence of a deity due to their almighty status, one should feel negative emotions when faced with Devils, yet we are unaffected."
Alex stayed silent as he realized that Victoria had a point.
But then he had encountered Devils, mostly Vessina and Xistora, yet he had never felt any form of negative emotion, or maybe he did, but it wasn’t a problem,m, so he didn’t think too much about it.
He glanced at the cocoon at the center of the valley, allowing several seconds to pass in silence before he broke the silence.
"Let’s focus on the task at hand. We can ask questions later."
"... Alright then."
"I plan to turn that thing, whatever it is, into a weapon."
"Against who?"
"Decad." Alex simply replied.
He has pulled a fast one on the Greater Spirit and he knew that a clash would be inevitable the next time they met.
To increase their chances of winning, Alex decided to take certain risks.
He guessed that the cocoon, though radiating a potent devilish aura, had connections to the deity Archibald had mentioned.
The Broken Saintess, was it?... Perhaps she could be an ingredient to not only take down Decad but to finally unlock the true potential of Excalibur.
"How do you plan on getting... whatever that is to help you?"
"I’m going to make them an offer they can’t refuse," Alex remarked as he took a step forward and snapped, allowing his shadow to quickly warp, taking the form of a black pool of dark ink.
Several inky tendrils shot out of the pool before rushing into the roots connected to the fleshy statue of the naked woman while one fell directly onto the face of the naked woman, piercing her forehead.
Closing his eyes, Alex inquired. "Could you summon a Devil?... Vessina, to be precise."
"I can try."
"Then do so," Alex remarked. "We might need her help."
"Got it." Victoria nodded as she used her fingernails to cut her wrist after she quickly began to draw a pentagram.
As the duo worked in tandem, with Victoria summoning Vessina and Alex envisioning himself as the Dark Lord at another location, a grand battle was about to take place.
The forces of the aggressors, led by King Lyssandros of Pellasus himself, were on one side, and on the other was King Atiphates of Milatrea standing with the forces of the defenders.
Between them was the deepest and most treacherous valley in all of Henos, known as the Valley of the Dead.
It was a fitting location for the battle that had seen many grand battles just like the one about to take place.
"My King, we are ready whenever you are." Lyssandros advisor remarked.
"Have the Messengers we sent to Atiphates returned?"
"No, we can only assume they are dead."
"I see." Lyssandros nodded.
Standing at a towering seven feet, he was a hulk of a man with ginger hair and was considered a man blessed by the heavens due to his outstanding appearance.
Usually in his palace, this was the first time since he ascended the throne of his father that he would be fighting a battle all because his best friend, Atiphates, decided to kidnap his queen.
His brown eyes, blazing with rage, focused on the camp on the other side of the Dead Valley as he gave the order. "Light the beacons, we match now."
