Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 569: The Weaver’s Labyrinth
Chapter 569: The Weaver’s Labyrinth
It was just as Victoria had said.
The Weavers were not physically aggressive creatures, instead content with entrapping their prey in intricate mental labyrinths.
These labyrinths were designed in such a way that escaping them would be almost impossible, ensuring that those who walked in would never be able to leave, wasting their strength in an attempt to escape until they had no strength left to keep moving.
It was into one such labyrinth that Elena and Victoria walked into, the walls of the labyrinth appeared as tall solid walls that prevented one from looking over them.
"What now?" Elena inquired as she scrutinized the area with an intrigued look on her face.
Victoria replied. "We should be able to find our way through this."
"On what grounds?"
"Because if we don’t, we die. We have no choice."
Elena facepalmed. "Why did I come with you again?"
"Because the Master gave you a task, you must complete it."
"You are still injured, Victoria, how sure are you that your body would last for as long as is needed to find the exit?"
"Don’t worry, it will," Victoria remarked, causing Elena to let out a sigh.
"Give me your hand."
Victoria raised a brow as she glanced at her. "Why?"
"I have a way to clear this labyrinth. One that doesn’t involve us wasting our time."
"How?"
"Give me your hand and you’ll find out."
Pursing her lips, Victoria did as instructed and Elena was more than pleased to take her hand.
Then, she ran towards the wall.
Before Victoria could stop her, she watched as Elena passed through the wall and then she did so as well.
"... What just happened?" Confusion marred her features as she turned to Elena for answers.
"I did say I was cooking up ways to be able to project my body from a different dimension, allowing me to phase through attacks. It can also be used to pass through objects, like walls for instance."
"...I see." Victoria intoned.
She’d prepared for an arduous journey through the maze to get to the Weaver but with Elena’s skill, it seemed there was no longer a need for that.
It left her feeling... slightly empty.
Of course, she didn’t voice this sentiment and instead focused on the positive.
"So, want to keep going?"
"Lead the way."
With Elena taking the lead, the duo went past the labyrinth walls, making their way in a straight line toward the end of it all.
After passing through thirty walls, they found themselves falling and moments later, awoke to find themselves back in the cavern they’d entered.
They tried to move only to discover they couldn’t, with thin but tough webs keeping them from doing so.
Then, exchanging eye contact, the duo’s expressions quickly changed as they inquired at the same time.
"Who are you?"

After three close calls with being drowned, Alex had his back against the wall... literally.
The hall he was in, unlike he’d initially thought, was not endless, with no exits or entrances to other rooms for as far as he’d gone.
Now with his back against the end of the supposed infinite hallway, a situation that Alex felt had been caused by some spatial meddling, Alex watched as a deluge of polluted water advanced toward him at a rapid pace, leaving no space for him to maneuver as he’d done the last four times.
But that wasn’t all there was to deal with as for some reason, he found himself assaulted by the ghosts walking these hallways, as they held him against the wall, spreading his arms and legs out until he was in an X shape while repeating the same words.
’Join us.’
Alex tried to snap but they held his fingers apart, preventing him from doing so.
But Alex was not about to let himself die in such a place as he unleashed Nyx’s authority, utilizing it as a figurative flash bang to scare away the ghosts, a tactic that worked splendidly as the ghosts fled in a panic, unwilling to face such a terrifying authority.
The hallway trembled as well, seemingly in response to the authority, letting out a mournful wail in the process.
Finally freed to do as he pleased, Alex didn’t hesitate to snap three times in quick succession.
The first snap conjured Embers that formed a boundary in an attempt to stop the deluge of water coming at him.
The second allowed for the emergence of Eternal Night, not as an encompassing domain but as a shroud that covered him, obscuring his features in the process.
Finally, the third was an ink-like substance dotted with white speckles that spread across the floor with his body as the epicenter.
It stained the ground and moved forward only to meet with a bit of resistance but it didn’t take long for the resistance to vanish, allowing the ink to continue unabated.
In the meantime, Embers was soon extinguished, a situation that did not catch Alex by surprise as he had expected it.
The polluted water conjured by this strange building held unique properties and though Alex was okay with not figuring out the extent of those properties, he was happy to know that he hadn’t underestimated it.
Just as the water came within meters of him, it suddenly fell back into the ground, merging with the floor like it was never there to begin with.
A relieved sigh escaped Alex’s lips as he got back on his feet.
Night’s Embrace was not an Ability he used often, with the last time he used it being during his visit to Popolis.
It was hardly useful in direct encounters but in such special locations, it was indispensable.
The Embrace allowed him to infect matter, turning into extensions of himself, which he could then manipulate as he wished.
Just like in Popolis, how he had infected portions of the shadowed city, allowing him to survive and not be turned into a shadow, he had done the same to the palace, putting an end to the attempts at drowning in the process.
However, unlike Propolis, which was shadowed by the remnant aspect of a Branch, the palace did not have such a special origin, which meant it was easier to infect and control.
As new information regarding the palace’s origins flooded his brain, Alex intoned. "So that’s how it is."
