Chapter 562: Another dragon?
Chapter 562: Another dragon?
As Alex and the others adjusted to the new world they found themselves in, Ana suddenly reacted, her gaze shifting in a certain direction, almost like she’d sensed something.
"What is it?" Alex asked, noticing the change.
Pursing her lips, she replied. "I can sense it now. My fate but I don’t understand."
"What’s wrong?"
"I can sense my kin."
Raising a brow, Alex remarked. "Your kin?... Like another dragon?"
"The sensation is slightly muddled but indeed, another dragon."
"But aren’t you the last dragon?" Ulysses inquired at the side.
"That’s what I’ve been told my whole life," Ana admitted. "And historical records state that the dragon race was wiped out. I would have been dead if not that I hadn’t hatched at that time."
What do we do?... Do you want to meet this dragon?... All things considered, he should be your ancestor.
"Or perhaps a dragon in a similar state as you when you were first discovered," Alex suggested.
Nodding thoughtfully, Ana remarked. "I guess we’ll just have to find out by heading towards it."
"Then let’s..." Alex trailed off as he sensed something from behind, same with others, with all swiveling at the same time and that was when they saw him.
It was the first mate, awake and currently approaching them when every other person aboard Athena was asleep.
"Uhmm..." Ulysses was about to speak up only for Alex to raise a finger, silencing him.
"Help me." The first mate muttered in a low tone, taking unsteady steps forward in a bid to bridge the distance between them.
The first mate stopped a few meters away from them and raised his head to meet Alex’s gaze.
Instead of a single iris, both eyes of the first mate seemed like a conglomeration of several smaller eyes, making for a grotesque sight that caused Ulysses to instinctively back away.
Then the first mate blinked, but his eyelids didn’t drop down. Instead, it was a translucent layer that did so, causing the situation to grow even more eerie.
But that was hardly the end of it as his skin began to melt into a goo-like substance, revealing fish-like scales underneath.
"What in the world..." Alex could hardly take any more of this freak show as he breathed out in slight disgust.
He is running mad.
Humphrey remarked as he took a step forward, his gaze filled more with curiosity than aversion.
"What?" Alex raised a brow, not exactly privy to the meaning of that phrase.
Ana was more than happy to explain things as she remarked. "It happens when a Mystic succumbs to the unnatural nature of their path, losing what makes them human."
"Is this a bad or a good thing?"
"A bad thing, of course. It’s one of the many risks a Mystic has to deal with the moment they break the boundary. Going crazy means turning into a monster and turning into a monster means you can no longer meditate, inadvertently leading to you losing your pneuma and becoming an empty husk."
Furrowing his brows, Alex felt like he had certainly seen such a thing before but couldn’t exactly place a finger on it.
Shaking his head, he decided not to overthink it, instead focusing on the situation at hand.
At this point, the first mate of Athena had shed his human features, now resembling a murloc with webbed appendages, fins for ears and on his spinal area, gills on his neck, and a slightly oversized body.
He much resembled the grotesque entities currently walking the land around the dilapidated castle.
This caused Alex to quickly make a conjecture as his expression shifted ever so slightly.
"What makes one go crazy?"
"Knowing something they shouldn’t, coming into contact with what they shouldn’t and most importantly, losing what reminds them of their humanity." Ana calmly replied.
"So which one caused a man to turn into that?"
Before Ana could reply, the first mate cried out in a loud voice. "Help me!"
His voice was shrill, disconcerting all those present, save for Humphrey, who was hardly bothered and, instead, opted to take a step forward.
The first mate reacted aggressively, using its webbed hands to swipe at Humphrey with the intent to rip him apart.
Surprisingly, this simple act caused the air to crackle with electricity, a phenomenon that did not go unnoticed by the former Lord of the Flies.
Humphrey didn’t even try to dodge as his ethereal body voided all physical attacks, allowing him to reach out and grab the first mate’s face.
Before a follow-up could be achieved by the monstrosity, Humphrey transmuted his life essence, ending his life in an instant.
As the Murloc dropped dead to the ground, Humphrey retracted his arm and intoned.
If I may, I’d presume that this pseudo dimension we are in constantly radiates a type of corruption that only affects those of the Storm Wheel, hence the reason our friend here ended up in such a sorry state.
"How can you be so sure of his Wheel?" Alex inquired.
Humphrey pointed to the neck of the now-dead Murloc.
The Stigma of the Storm Wheel manifests on their neck. A scenery of a storm on a rainy day.
"I see." Nodding thoughtfully, Alex glanced at the castle. "So this is some kind of corrupted space but it’s only dangerous to Mystics of the Storm Wheel?"
"I won’t say it’s a corrupted space." Ana calmly intoned, drawing attention back to her.
"Then what?"
"It’s a relic."
"A what?"
I am inclined to agree. There is no such thing as a corrupted space, but there is a destructive energy currently permeating this region, one very similar to the energy relics exude. So it’s safe to say this space is a relic and a relatively high-level one at that.
"I don’t get it. Relics are capable of creating dimensions?"
"No, not on their own at least. Something’s going on here and it is related to a relic." Ana calmly replied.
Just as Alex was about to pose another question, Ulysses called their attention over.
"Uhmm guys, I think we have company."
Frowning, Alex followed Ulysses’ line of sight only for his expression to shift as he noticed the approach of the murlocs that walked the land about the dilapidated castle.
It seemed despite being dead, the first mate ended up becoming quite a nuisance.
