Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 536: Gone
Chapter 536: Gone
"Are you certain you wish to go ahead with this?" Alejandro inquired as he came to stand beside Alex, his gaze fixed on Ulysses.
Alex nodded. "She asked me to save him and since there is a certain risk about him, it’s only right that I take responsibility for that risk."
"I never knew you were such a sentimental guy," Alejandro remarked before adding. "I apologize for your loss. Your sister... she was a hero. A strong woman willing to give her life for the world."
"I wish she had been more selfish," Alex remarked with a slight chuckle, no longer bothering to correct the fact that he wasn’t truly Emily’s brother.
Even if he wasn’t, she had considered him her brother before her death.
It changed nothing if he accepted that at least for now, he was her brother.
"Do you wish to leave now?" Alejandro asked with Alex replying.
"Not yet. I wish to give her a grand burial."
"She deserves that. Come, let me help you. It’s the least I can do considering the circumstances."
Just then, Alejandro sensed the approach of a few individuals causing him to look back just in time to find Aiden and the other family Heads approaching with a silver cube that seemed stuck in between states.
"I believe this is the first we have met, Dark Lord." Lionel calmly intoned as he took the lead, not because he was ahead but because Aiden had his attention focused elsewhere.
One could quickly tell that the Family Heads were in a less-than-ideal state due to their pale complexion.
Alex replied. "It is an honor to meet the guardians of the Empire."
There was no need to antagonize them so he sought to maintain a certain level of decorum.
Just then, he made eye contact with Oswald with the latter acknowledging his presence before looking away.
It seemed the Conductor of Ordnance had decided not to pursue matters considering what happened the last time they met, which came as a welcome relief to Alex.
He was hardly in the state to engage in any form of battle as he was physically, mentally, and, most importantly, emotionally exhausted.
"Unbelievable." Aiden suddenly spoke up, gaining the attention of the others.
"What is it?" Godric asked.
"That boy," Aiden remarked while staring at Ulysses.
Meanwhile, Ulysses, now gaining the attention of the Family Heads, quickly found himself stripped of everything as their gazes bored down heavily on him.
Just as he began to gasp for breath, Alex stepped in. "What’s going on?"
"Do you know why we do not regard 1st-Class Otherworldly as gods even though they are as powerful as gods?" Aiden suddenly questioned, causing Alex to raise a brow.
"Uhmm, why?"
"It is because though their strength remains illogical, reaching heights that would threaten gods, they do not possess divinity. Divinity is what qualifies any other being from a deity."
"I don’t understand, if that is the case, then how come Abyss Wheel Mystics need to be contracted to an Otherworldly to gain a chance at divinity?"
Oswald spoke up at that moment. "The Otherworldly does not provide them with divinity, same with the Devils, Virtues, and Cryptids. All it does is to give the Mystic the materials needed to walk the path of the divine. The ones that are responsible for granting divinity are the Guardians of the respective Wheels."
"I see," Alex muttered before shaking his head as he realized he was getting carried away.
Shifting his attention back to Aiden, he asked. "Why are you bringing this up?"
"The only time the aura of the Abyss manages to be perfectly aligned with divinity is when an Abyss Wheel Mystic reaches the 8th Lock and becomes a Daemon. But for some reason, your friend over there somehow managed to reach such a delicate state." Aiden explained causing Alex to frown before he proceeded to look back as well, scrutinizing Ulysses further.
He naturally didn’t have the ocular perception that Aiden had but to think that he had missed such a thing was monumental.
"I can understand the abyssal corruption, but divinity?... How can a human have divinity?" Alejandro seemed rather perplexed as he studied Ulysses as well.
Pursing his lips, Alex inquired. "Does this make him problematic?"
"At least as much as you are a problem." Aiden calmly replied. "The longer you exist, the more errors the Will of the World will create to perfectly embody your state, at which point, you can be said to have been perfectly assimilated."
Alex let out a sigh. "I see. In that case, it’s fine. I have decided to take him under my wing so you won’t have to worry about keeping an eye on him."
"As you wish." Aiden didn’t seem bothered by this and since the other Family Heads didn’t argue, Ulysses fate was sealed.
"Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to..." Alex trailed off as he felt something resonate within his being, causing him to look in a certain direction.
Others present, save for Ulysses, seemed to have sensed something as well as they glanced in the same direction just in time for black and white light to flash before receding to reveal Alex along with Humphrey and a floating black orb.
"A clone... and a perfect one at that. Quite impressive." Aiden praised though Alex wasn’t in the mood to give a response as he approached the clone with steady steps.
The clone said nothing, only turning into light and shadows that Alex absorbed into himself as he closed his eyes.
When he opened his eyes, he glanced at the orb with Humphrey taking the hint.
The orb dissipated, revealing the floating bodies of Arthur and Lucille.
"Arthur!" Alejandro exclaimed as he rushed over swiftly with Aiden also frowning as he recognized Lucille’s corpse.
He took steady steps forward with the Family Heads following closely behind.
"Who did this?" Alejandro asked, his tone cracked and his body overheating.
Alex replied. "A Daemon of the Devil Wheel."
Both Robert and Charles reacted as they were well acquainted with the person Alex mentioned.
To think that she would take advantage of the battle to conclude her task.
"Where is she now?" Aiden inquired calmly, his expression rather impassive as his fingers ran over where Lucille’s ’heart’ should have been.
"Gone," Alex answered with a pained expression. "Long gone."
